Battlefield 6 Accused of Using AI-Generated Art in New Cosmetics Bundle

Players of Battlefield 6 are claiming that EA used artificial intelligence to create one of the items in the new Windchill bundle. The use of AI in game development is a hot topic right now, with many studios exploring it and fans increasingly spotting what looks like AI-created content in games. Although Battlefield 6 hasn’t officially said whether it’s using AI, some players believe it was used to create at least one of the new cosmetic items.

EA’s Battlefield 6 started strong, but recently it’s faced some challenges. The Winter Offensive update caused significant issues, and the number of players has decreased considerably since launch. While the developers at Battlefield Studios are working to fix these technical problems, they’ve also been criticized by some players who believe the studio is using AI to create new content.

Battlefield 6 Users Think Winter Warning Sticker Is AI-Generated

Fans quickly noticed a potential issue with a recently released cosmetic bundle in Battlefield 6. One of the stickers, called “Winter Warning,” depicts a soldier with a rifle that seems to have been strangely rendered – it appears to have two barrels and a duplicated ejection port cover. Users pointed out that these kinds of duplicated elements are often a telltale sign of images created by artificial intelligence. While EA hasn’t confirmed whether the sticker was AI-generated, reports suggest the company is encouraging developers to use AI, even though some developers have expressed concerns about it.

Most players recognize the recent sticker as likely created by artificial intelligence, but opinions on whether that’s a good thing are split. Some are upset with EA for potentially replacing artists with AI, while others feel it was careless to release an AI-created item with errors after players paid for it. However, some believe AI is becoming unavoidable in game development and that this instance isn’t a big deal. The frustration is understandable, though, especially since a lead developer on Battlefield 6 previously stated the game wouldn’t include visible AI-generated content, despite acknowledging the company experimented with the technology during early stages of development and finding it appealing.

This means the game might not have initially launched with AI-generated items, but could have added them later through updates like the recent cosmetics. However, even if the studio hasn’t gone back on its word, some players are still upset about the potential use of AI, particularly because it mirrors a similar situation with their main competitor. Just before the issues with the Winter Warning update, fans of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 criticized Activision for including AI-created art, which the studio acknowledged but defended.

Whether the next Battlefield game will use artificial intelligence to create character customizations is still unknown. However, even if it does, it wouldn’t be the first game to do so, and it’s hard to say how players will react. While some gamers have protested against AI in games, it doesn’t always discourage people from playing them. For example, Arc Raiders received criticism for using AI voices, but still proved to be very popular. The new Battlefield is already selling well, so it remains to be seen how these AI-related concerns will affect its long-term success.
