Rebecka Coutaz, now the General Manager and Vice President of DICE, has addressed the difficult launch of *Battlefield 2042*. She feels it’s created a strong need to make *Battlefield 6* an exceptional game. Coutaz took on her current role in 2021, soon after *Battlefield 2042*’s release, and *Battlefield 6* will be the first installment in the series she oversees.
The *Battlefield* series became a legendary first-person shooter franchise with the release of *Battlefield 1942* in 2002, and has consistently been a major competitor to *Call of Duty*. However, the series took a significant hit in 2021 with the poor launch of *Battlefield 2042*. While critics gave the game mixed reviews, the *Battlefield* community strongly disliked it, even making it the lowest-rated game on Steam for a time. Players criticized the game for performance problems, the lack of features found in older *Battlefield* titles (like a server browser and scoreboard), and the decision to move away from traditional character classes in favor of specialists.
Battlefield Boss Comments on 2042’s Failure
Though updates have greatly improved *Battlefield 2042*, its rocky launch clearly influenced the future of the game’s development team, DICE. In a recent interview, DICE leader Laurent Coutaz explained his commitment to delivering a top-tier *Battlefield* experience, stating he felt a responsibility to both the community and the development teams. Design Director Shashank Uchil addressed the criticism surrounding *Battlefield 2042*, particularly the change to the traditional class system, by saying they weren’t afraid to experiment, and acknowledged that not every idea succeeds. He explained that the larger player count they tried simply didn’t resonate with players, and ultimately, they prioritize what the community wants, much like a band adapting to fan feedback.

DICE leader Coutaz highlighted the significant improvements made to *Battlefield 2042* through ongoing updates. She stated the game is now vastly different from its original release. To build excitement for the upcoming *Battlefield 6*, a free ‘Road to Battlefield 6’ Battle Pass is available in *Battlefield 2042*. Players can earn free rewards within the game and even unlock items they’ll be able to use in *Battlefield 6* when it launches next month.

As a huge fan, I’m so hyped for *Battlefield 6*! It’s coming out in just two weeks, and it looks like it’s going to be another big showdown with *Call of Duty*, since *Black Ops 7* is dropping a few weeks after that, on November 14th. But honestly, *Battlefield 6* is already looking really good! While *Black Ops 7* has had some issues even before launch, the *Battlefield 6* beta was a massive success for EA – it was the biggest beta the series has *ever* had, and it actually had more people playing on Steam than *Call of Duty*! That’s a great sign, but we’ll really see how things shake out when the full game launches on October 10th.
