A team member working on the new Battlefield game, Battlefield 6, revealed that during the upcoming open beta, players can choose between class-restricted and unrestricted weapon setups. Battlefield 6, as part of the popular Battlefield series and the primary installment since Battlefield 2042 in 2021, is undergoing testing at present, with a release date likely to be announced shortly.
Although an official release date for Battlefield 6 hasn’t been disclosed yet, Electronic Arts (EA) has made significant announcements about it. EA confirmed that the official trailer for Battlefield 6 will be unveiled on July 24, 2025, and this will officially reveal the game’s title and theme. While we don’t have all the details yet, much has been learned about Battlefield 6 thanks to EA’s collaborative testing with the gaming community through the Battlefield Labs program. The official reveal might just serve to validate what’s already being speculated about the game, as it appears there will be some changes from the usual traditions of the Battlefield franchise.
As an enthusiastic player, I can’t help but notice one intriguing modification in the upcoming Battlefield 6: the class system. Instead of being confined to specific weapons based on our roles, we now have a broader choice. However, during the open beta test, as announced by David Sirland, Lead Producer of Battlefield 6 on Twitter, players will be given the flexibility to choose between class-locked weapons and the new open weapon system. This option will manifest in the form of an official playlist setting, with one list sticking to traditional class-bound weapons and another embracing the freedom of open weapon selection. The open weapons playlist follows what we’ve been briefed on in community updates, allowing players of any class to select any type of weapon they prefer. In contrast, the class-locked weapons playlist will limit a class’ Signature Weapons to those who actually play that class, such as only Assault players being able to pick Assault Rifles and Recon players selecting Sniper Rifles.
Battlefield 6 Open Beta Will Let Players Choose Between Class-Locked and Open Weapons
- Assault Rifles locked to Assault Class
- Submachine Guns locked to Engineer Class
- Light Machine Guns locked to Support Class
- Sniper Rifles locked to Recon Class
- Designated Marksman Rifles, Shotguns, Carbines not locked, can be picked by any class
According to Sirland’s post, the new weapons system playlist will limit Special Weapons to their designated classes, while certain weapons, such as carbines, shotguns, and DMRs (a type of sniper rifle known as Designated Marksman Rifle), will be accessible by any player. This setup seems reminiscent of the one used in Battlefield 4. Since Battlefield 4 is a highly popular game within the Battlefield series, players who skipped Battlefield V and 2042 (which received mixed reviews) might find this choice comfortingly familiar, as it resembles their preferred Battlefield 4 experience.

As of now, Electronic Arts (EA) hasn’t made a decision about whether they will continue offering open weapon systems in Battlefield 6 beyond the beta phase. This uncertainty may be strategic, allowing Battlefield Studios to collect player data and gauge community preferences. Alternatively, they might be exploring how closed weapon systems could affect the game’s multiplayer dynamics. Regardless, players eager to test both systems should keep an eye out for the upcoming beta test.
