Outside of recent updates to Battlefield 2042, the Battlefield franchise has been noticeably quiet for a four-year span. In this absence, significant developments have taken place, notably concerning cosmetic items and in-game transactions. Though these elements remain crucial components of live-service games, players have grown weary of excessive and unrealistic skins in what they considered to be realistic first-person shooters. Consequently, Activision has acknowledged the criticism and admitted that it had veered from what sets Call of Duty apart. Furthermore, they’ve announced substantial changes for the upcoming title in the series, named Black Ops 7.

Battlefield 6 Devs Want It to Be a “Gritty, Realistic Shooter”

In the past, Activision’s Call of Duty franchise faced intense criticism due to its excessively unrealistic cosmetic items. However, following their recent decision to scrap Carry Forward for Black Ops 7, there has been a shift in direction. In a recent IGN interview, Battlefield Studios addressed this controversy and expressed their intention to maintain the franchise’s authentic, realistic atmosphere. When asked if they felt that staying true to their gritty, grounded style was beneficial, technical director Christian Buhl responded, “Each game should be free to be whatever it wants, right? Fortnite, for instance, is quite whimsical and successful. So, we’re content with our place. We strive to deliver a gritty, serious, realistic shooting experience.

Matthew Nickerson, a senior console combat designer, added that Battlefield is mindful of other products in the market but is primarily focused on what works best for Battlefield. He emphasized that they are not following trends or competing with other products. Nickerson further referenced the Road to Battlefield 6 Battle Pass in Battlefield 2042 as a prime example of the type of skins the studio intends to offer for the upcoming series installment, describing it as a sneak peek into what’s to come.

Players have been reassured by the developers that the skins for Battlefield 6 will adhere to the game’s realistic theme, but some apprehensions have surfaced among fans. For instance, a leaked skin featuring a neon green trim on a soldier’s uniform has sparked questions within the gaming community. Although it doesn’t resemble the cartoonish style of Beavis & Butt-Head in Call of Duty, some enthusiasts have suggested pushing back against such skins in Battlefield 6, fearing that allowing unrealistic cosmetics could lead to an escalation of increasingly extravagant options.
