In an interview with IGN in September 2024, Vince Zampella, Head of Respawn and Group GM for EA Studios Organization, shared the first news about Battlefield 6. He emphasized that the team is aiming to bring Battlefield back to its classic roots with this new game, using Battlefield 3 and 4 as examples of the series’ peak or pinnacle, which they are trying to replicate.
In essence, the strategy to revive the glory days of the Battlefield series could significantly change its existing gameplay dynamics, possibly discarding some freshly added features. It’s been confirmed that Specialists from Battlefield 2042 are no more, and it’s expected that the Weapon Plus system may also be phased out. However, there’s a classic element of the franchise that could pose a challenge for balancing in Battlefield 6.
Battlefield 6 Will Need to Make a Decision About The Series’ Revive Mechanic
How Battlefield’s Revive Mechanic Has Changed Over The Years
The revive mechanism, first seen in 2005’s “Battlefield 2”, has since become a signature element of the “Battlefield” series, being included in every main game release since then. At its inception, the revive system in “Battlefield” necessitated the utilization of a Defibrillator device, which was unique to the Medic character class. Medics could employ this Defibrillator to restore downed teammates to their maximum health.
In addition to quickly returning team members to the action, a significant advantage of resuscitating teammates in Battlefield is that it prevents the loss of Reinforcement Points, ensuring the team can stay engaged for a longer period. The revive mechanism in Battlefield remained relatively consistent until the release of Battlefield V in 2018.
In Battlefield V, the ‘Buddy Revive’ feature was implemented, allowing squad members to resuscitate each other without requiring a unique Medic device. To keep things fair, Battlefield V made it so that reviving allies took several seconds, while a Medic’s syringe could instantly bring them back to life. Building on this system, Battlefield 2042 retained the mechanic but added a new limitation. Since there were no classes available at launch, only players who chose the Specialist Falck could perform rescues in Battlefield 2042.
Reverting Battlefield’s Revive Mechanic Could Be a Double-Edged Sword
Indications strongly suggest that Battlefield 6 could mark a comeback for the series, possibly even a return to its fundamental roots. A genuine comeback to basics might involve reinstating the revive mechanic to its original system, which was present in every game prior to Battlefield V. In this scenario, only characters with the Medic class would be capable of resuscitating fallen teammates.
As per the latest rumors, it appears that Battlefield 6 could incorporate a pulling mechanism. With this feature, players would be able to drag fallen comrades away from danger to safety, then proceed to revive them in a protected location.
One potential advantage of this change could be that it may enhance the significance and uniqueness of classes in Battlefield 6, providing a positive shift following the controversial Specialist system in Battlefield 2042. However, eliminating squad revives might result in extended waiting periods for players, particularly those without a medic in their team, potentially leading to aggravation and negative interactions. A potential solution could be an approach similar to Battlefield V’s system, allowing Medics to instantly revive allies while teammates require a brief moment to perform the same action.
