Players have been impressed with the level of destruction in Battlefield 6, and it appears that focusing development on newer consoles—rather than including older ones like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One—was crucial to achieving this.
So, the team behind the new Battlefield has been talking a lot about how much you can destroy in the game, and it sounds awesome! They’re calling it ‘tactical destruction,’ and they really want to give us a ton of freedom to change the battlefield. Apparently, they took a lot of inspiration from how destructible things were in Bad Company 2 – which was already pretty cool. Now, they’ve finally explained what went into making this level of destruction possible in the new game.
The ‘Magic Trick’ Behind Battlefield 6’s Destruction is Dropping Previous-Gen Consoles
In a recent interview with PC Gamer, Battlefield 6’s technical director, Christian Buhl, explained the impressive destruction system in the game. He stated that the key improvement comes from no longer needing to support older consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One. This allowed the development team to utilize more memory and faster processors, resulting in better overall performance, as they weren’t limited by the need to optimize for older hardware.
Even after removing support for older consoles, the team put in a significant amount of effort to improve the destruction mechanics in Battlefield 6. Technical Director Buhl explained they focused on extensively testing and optimizing these features. He emphasized that destruction is a fundamental part of the Frostbite engine, which was specifically designed for Battlefield. Ultimately, Buhl stated that achieving this level of destruction wasn’t about finding a single solution, but rather through consistent testing, refinement, and hard work.
