61-year-old Japanese voice artist Atsuko Tanaka has sadly passed away. Throughout her career that started in the early ’90s, she brought life to countless renowned characters in anime and video games.
Initially, she earned credit for her role in anime through ‘Mobile Suit Victory Gundam’, where she brought Juca Mellasch to life. In the same year, she marked her debut in video games by voicing Lisa in the Japanese version of the Sega CD game known as ‘Night Trap’. Since then, she has been a consistent presence in the industry, lending her voice to approximately 160 different video games.
On August 20, 2024, the heartbreaking news was shared on Twitter by Hikaru Tanaka, her son and another voice actor, about the passing of his mother, Tanaka. He disclosed that she had been fighting an unspecified illness for a year prior.
Hikaru posted a touching message thanking everyone for their assistance during his mother’s professional journey. As requested, he chose not to reveal the exact nature of her illness in the post, based on a translation from a machine.
Nevertheless, she tackled her struggle, which encompassed approximately a year of fighting her illness, with grace, determination, and a touch of her unique wit – reflecting the essence of Atsuko Tanaka’s life. Furthermore, he urged fans to recall the characters and creations that bore the testament of her love and devotion.
Atsuko Tanaka Leaves Behind A Lasting Legacy
As an avid fan, I can’t help but acknowledge that Atsuko Tanaka has left a profound impact on my favorite realm of video games and anime. Her unforgettable portrayal of Motoko Kusanagi in the Ghost in the Shell movies and series is undoubtedly one of the highlights of my fandom experience.
She expanded her work into popular franchises, such as playing the character Bayonetta in the Bayonetta series, lending her voice to Chun-Li in two Street Fighter games, and voicing Lisa Lisa in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Konan in Naruto, Caster in Fate/stay night, and Hanami in Jujutsu Kaisen.
Her most recent video game work includes voicing Rhinedottir in Genshin Impact and Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider series. She also reprised her role as Hanami in Jujutsu Kaisen: Cursed Clash.
