The new game, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, made a huge splash at this year’s Game Awards, opening the show with a surprising reveal. Even after seeing the announcement trailer, the game remains largely a mystery, and that’s likely to continue for a while. While the cinematic trailer didn’t reveal much, it sparked a lot of interest, and some initial details have gamers eager to find out more.
Fans were eager to see the remake of Knights of the Old Republic at The Game Awards, but the announcement of Fate of the Old Republic, a new game set in the same era, might be even more exciting. Adding to the hype, Casey Hudson, who previously led the original Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect series, is heading the project. While this new game sounds fantastic, it’s probably wise for players to temper their expectations. The initial reveal of Fate of the Old Republic was impressive, but also showed that there’s still a lot to learn and potential challenges ahead.
Fate of the Old Republic’s Trailer Was Incredible… But There Are Two Glaring Issues
I was immediately captivated by the trailer for Fate of the Old Republic. The visuals, music, and overall presentation were stunning. However, it’s disappointing to remember it’s just a concept trailer and doesn’t show actual gameplay. Hopefully, the final game will look just as good, or even better. But the studio developing it is very new – and I mean incredibly new to the industry.
Arcanaut Studios Isn’t Even a Year Old Yet
Arcanaut Studios is a brand new company, officially launched just this July. Taking on a major franchise like Star Wars is a big undertaking for such a young studio. Having Casey Hudson lead the project is encouraging, given his past work on the series. However, Hudson has faced challenges recently. After leaving BioWare several years ago, his independent ventures haven’t always gone smoothly, and those difficulties could potentially impact Arcanaut Studios as well.
Since Leaving BioWare, Casey Hudson’s Journey Hasn’t Been Smooth
- In 2014, Casey Hudson left BioWare to pursue other opportunities, but eventually came back in 2015.
- He left BioWare for a second and final time at the end of 2020.
- In 2021, Hudson announced the formation of his own studio, Human Origin.
- Human Origin was shut down in 2024 without ever shipping a game.
Starting a new game studio is incredibly challenging, and sadly, Hudson’s attempt didn’t succeed. The gaming industry has faced a lot of difficulties recently, with many studios closing, people losing jobs, and games being canceled. According to Humanoid Origin, the closure was caused by a lack of funding. While this first studio didn’t work out, it doesn’t necessarily mean the same will happen to Arcanaut Studios, but it’s something to keep in mind. The good news is that announcing Fate of the Old Republic at The Game Awards and generating excitement early on should help them secure funding this time.
The last BioWare game that Casey Hudson was credited with working on was 2019’s Anthem.
The KOTOR Remake Has Been Cursed, and Fate of the Old Republic Can Hopefully Save Itself From the Same Development Hell
The remake of the popular game KOTOR was first announced in 2021. While four years isn’t an unusually long wait for a game to be developed, we haven’t heard much about it since. There have been only a few hints and rumors to suggest it’s still being made. Originally, Aspyr was developing the remake, but Saber Interactive took over in 2022. With reports of problems during development, the removal of the announcement trailer due to a music licensing issue, and disagreements about the game’s creative vision, the KOTOR remake is starting to feel increasingly unlikely to ever be released.
With Fate of the Old Republic on the horizon, there’s hope it will learn from past mistakes. Having Casey Hudson, who understands what made the original KOTOR great, involved is a good sign. However, his recent time away from game development is a little concerning. Ultimately, the success of Fate of the Old Republic will depend on having a strong, unified development team, and we’ll have to wait and see if that comes together.
The KOTOR remake has started to feel more like a pipe dream than something that’s truly possible.
Fate of the Old Republic is Years Away, But it’s Hopefully Worth the Wait
It’s unclear when Fate of the Old Republic will be released, especially considering the studio is new. While the reveal trailer looked amazing, that doesn’t guarantee the game will live up to the hype. The Game Awards brought several Star Wars announcements, including the racing game Star Wars: Galactic Racer. It will be interesting to see how long it takes for both of these projects to come out, especially since the KOTOR remake and Star Wars Eclipse have been in development for years with little news. Hopefully, Fate of the Old Republic won’t suffer the same fate. This new game offers something many Star Wars fans want, but it’s best to temper expectations.
