Become a forsaken nun and find absolution in the dead, almost-techno gothic horror world of Metamorphosis

I have to admit, something about Metamorphosis really unsettles me. The basic idea – you’re a nun trying to find redemption in a pixel art horror game – sounds cool, but the demo just feels oppressive. From the start, being deep under a church feels wrong – what does that even mean? And then you find this weird machine, and it starts off looking like something out of a gothic horror game like Bloodborne, but quickly becomes strangely technological. It’s just… unsettling and confusing in a way that really gets under my skin.

Think of this device as your main menu. When it starts, a voice appears as text, prompting you to type commands. If you type ‘help’, it displays a list of options like inventory, journal, and settings, each with a description. There’s also an ‘OS’ option, which is only described as ‘me’. This suggests ‘OS’ stands for operating system, raising questions about the nature of this world and how it works.

The demo doesn’t offer answers to these questions, and that’s understandable, but it doesn’t make the game any easier. Progress is difficult because Metamorphosis is unforgiving – you can die quickly, and the strange, frightening enemies often cause panic. The dark lighting makes it hard to judge distances and adds to the challenge. When you die, you’re sent back to your last save point, which might be frustratingly far away. Saving is limited to specific locations, though you can create temporary save points with candles.

Even though I write about PC games, I’m not very skilled at using a keyboard and mouse. While you can play Metamorphosis with a controller, the tutorial is designed for PC, which meant I had to switch back to keyboard and mouse because I wasn’t sure what each controller button did. The game has a lot of controls to remember, making it a little difficult and sometimes feels unfair. However, I’m willing to overlook this because the game’s atmosphere is really captivating.

Metamorphosis is coming soon to Steam! You can add it to your wishlist now, and even try out a demo to get a feel for the game.
