Summary
- Kojima conceptualizes “Plate Gate” to possibly create endless Death Stranding sequels.
- Although Kojima won’t work on Death Stranding 3, he has plans for future sequels.
- The COVID-19 pandemic coincidentally mirrored Death Stranding’s theme of connectivity.
Despite Death Stranding 2: On the Beach not having been launched yet, renowned video game designer Hideo Kojima is already brainstorming potential directions for the third installment, as well as subsequent sequels, building upon the storyline of where DS2 concludes.
It has been verified that Kojima will not be in charge of its creation due to his preference for handing it over to another creator. Given the current workload of the game developer, it’s no surprise that he would like someone else to carry on the series.
Death Stranding 2’s Plate Gate Concept Can Make “Endless Sequels”

In an interview with VGC, Kojima discussed the idea behind “Plate Gate” and how it could lead to numerous follow-ups for Death Stranding, as each game would be set in distinct countries worldwide.
Kojima stated, “Employing the Plate Gate idea would allow me to create an endless series of sequels. However, rest assured, I have no intentions of doing so. Yet, I do have a concept for another sequel up my sleeve. If I were to pass this idea on to someone else, they might be able to bring it to life.
It makes sense that Kojima might not be working on Death Stranding 3 since he is 61 years old and has numerous ongoing projects. For instance, there’s his horror game “OD” in collaboration with Xbox, an espionage game for Sony under the code name Physint, and a feature film as well.
As a devoted fan, I can share that Kojima himself revealed insights into how the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the progress of Death Stranding 2, a project with the intriguing tagline “We ought to have remained disconnected.
Kojima articulates that Death Stranding was launched prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. The world was moving towards isolation and fragmentation, much like Brexit in the UK. His message was essentially, “Let’s connect; we’re heading for trouble if we don’t.” This theme of connection ran throughout the game’s story and gameplay. Interestingly, only three months after its release, the world found itself amid a pandemic, which eerily resembled the scenario portrayed in Death Stranding. In today’s 21st century, we have something similar to the Chiral Network – the Internet – that helped us weather the pandemic by keeping people connected online. This is a stark contrast to earlier pandemics such as the Spanish Flu.
In an unusual twist, after designing a game centered around unity rather than separation and solitude, we found ourselves in a global pandemic situation. This led me to ponder, ‘Perhaps connecting too intensely isn’t always beneficial.’ – Kojima expressed this thought.
Could it be possible that someone else at Kojima Productions might create Death Stranding 3? If Death Stranding 2 achieves strong sales, it could happen. We’ll find out for sure as Death Stranding 2 is scheduled to launch on June 26, 2025, exclusively on the PlayStation 5.
