Welcome to Derry” promises to bring fans back to the chilling town of Derry in Maine created by Stephen King. Despite the fact that the first season of HBO’s adaptation hasn’t been aired yet, there are reports indicating that the production for season 2 is already secured, with a potential filming date on the horizon as well.
Stephen King’s novels have been brought to life on screen in various adaptations, such as “Misery” with Kathy Bates and “The Shining”. However, some argue that the latest adaptations of “IT”, released in 2017 and its sequel, are among the best. Directed by Andy Muschietti, who also directed the “IT” duology, the upcoming prequel titled “Welcome to Derry” will feature Bill Skarsgård reprising his role as the fearsome clown Pennywise. Joining Skarsgård are Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, Taylour Paige, James Remar, and Stephen Rider, known for playing Blake Tower in “Daredevil”. Unlike the original 1990 “IT” film, which was shot in Pickering and Port Hope, Ontario, many scenes for “Welcome to Derry” were filmed at the Delta Secondary School in Hamilton, Ontario. Spanning nine episodes, the series will be set in 1962, a year before the timeline of the first “IT” film, and will delve into Pennywise’s origin story.
IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2 Has Reportedly Been Greenlit

Based on information from ScreenTime via Twitter and leaker Daniel Richtman, it appears that IT: Welcome to Derry has been renewed for a second season before the first season has even premiered. If this is accurate (which should be taken with caution as HBO has not yet made an official announcement), filming for the new season will start in March 2026. This news could indicate that the horror series is expected to do well among viewers, given that they won’t see Season 1 until a few months later.
To begin with the new year, director Andy Muschietti of “Derry” unveiled that the series would span over three seasons. The first season is set in the timeline of 1962, while the second season will be a prequel, taking place in 1935, and the third season in 1908. Now that season 2 has been given the go-ahead, viewers can look forward to witnessing the story unfold in reverse order, focusing on a significant event related to Pennywise’s return. Muschietti also hinted at various events such as the fire in the Black Spot, the Bradley Gang massacre, and the explosion of the Kitchener Ironworks being included in “IT: Welcome to Derry”.

Has a second season of the IT series on HBO been confirmed yet? Regardless, it’s evident that this adaptation is being treated with great importance. At the latest San Diego Comic-Con panel, co-creator Barbara Muschietti assured fans that the show would maintain the same level of intensity and fright as the movies. Moreover, she hinted that certain scenes might not make it to the final version, making viewers curious about what terrors they may encounter when the series premieres around Halloween.

The IT sequel, set in the city of Derry, is planned to premiere in October 2025, where it will be available to watch in full on HBO Max.
