Beloved Survival Game Returns to Xbox Game Pass After 3 Years

Good news for Xbox Game Pass subscribers! The survival game The Long Dark is now available on the service. It’s the 13th game added in March 2026, bringing the year’s total to 51 new titles.

Originally released as an early access game on Steam in September 2014, The Long Dark had its full launch across multiple platforms in August 2017. However, that wasn’t the end of development. Vancouver-based Hinterland Studio continued to expand the game, starting with the episodic story mode, Wintermute. The latest installment, Episode 4: Fury, Then Silence, came out in October 2021. After three delays and five years of other improvements to the game, the final episode—fittingly named The Light at the End of All Things—is set to be released tomorrow, March 31.

The Long Dark Rejoins Xbox Game Pass Ahead of Its Story Mode’s Conclusion

Just before the release of Episode 5, the survival game The Long Dark became available again on Xbox Game Pass on March 30th. You can play it with all Game Pass memberships except the basic Essential plan. It’s playable on PC, consoles, and through Xbox Cloud Gaming on compatible devices. The Long Dark was previously on Game Pass for three years, leaving in April 2023. It’s unknown how long it will stay this time, as Microsoft typically doesn’t announce how long games will be available on the service.

As of late March 2026, players consistently rate The Long Dark highly. It has an average of 4.4 stars on the Xbox Store, based on over 9,700 reviews. On Steam, almost 90% of player reviews are positive – Steam’s highest rating. This makes The Long Dark one of the best-rated survival games for Xbox Game Pass members.

Xbox Game Pass subscribers can look forward to The Long Dark, which is the next-to-last game being added this month as part of the March 2026 lineup. The March additions wrap up tomorrow, March 31st, with the return of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, a game that hasn’t been available on the service for quite some time. Also on March 31st, two games – Peppa Pig: World Adventures and Mad Streets – will be removed from Xbox Game Pass.
