Bengals QB Joe Burrow Comments on Pokemon Card Hobby

Joe Burrow, quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals, described the world of Pokemon Trading Card Game collecting as “definitely a weird one” after being questioned about Pokemon during a recent press conference. He also mentioned that he thought it was “pretty cool” how popular the Pokemon TCG became after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Collecting Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) cards is still a popular and profitable hobby. Over the past few years, Pokémon and card game fans have been eager to buy cards and products, but The Pokémon Company and stores have had trouble keeping up with the high demand. This problem has been made worse by people who buy up large quantities of cards and boxes to resell them online at inflated prices. Despite this, the popularity of Pokémon TCG has also been used for good, like a recent charity auction where an autographed Kabuto card sold for $51,100 on eBay. All the money from that sale went to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Bengals QB Joe Burrow Talks Shop About Pokemon Cards

Before the Bengals play the Ravens, quarterback Joe Burrow talked to reporters on December 10th and addressed his hobby of collecting Pokemon cards. He admitted the trend of buying, grading, and selling Pokemon card packs is “a little strange,” especially given how popular it’s become on social media. Burrow doesn’t personally go to stores to buy Pokemon TCG products, but he’s heard about fans camping out and even fighting over limited stock. He also thinks it’s great that Pokemon TCG has grown in popularity since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

So, it was my birthday recently, and some of the guys on the O-line got me a Pokémon box, which is awesome! I haven’t even gotten around to opening it yet, though. People were asking about my favorite Pokémon stuff, and honestly, I’ve played a lot of the games over the years. I’d have to say Pokémon Ruby is probably my favorite. As for Pokémon themselves, I always loved Blaziken, Zapdos, and Mewtwo. But I’m not a big fan of Ghost-types, if I’m being honest.

The Pokemon TCG Remains Popular Among Stars and Thieves

Joe Burrow isn’t the only NFL player interested in Pokémon cards. In early October, former quarterback Tom Brady launched a trading card store called CardVault in Manhattan, but it quickly gained attention for a different reason: a robbery. According to a police report, on October 20th, someone stole almost $10,000 worth of Pokémon cards and other items from the store. The thief reportedly fooled the store clerks into believing they had paid for the cards. As of late November, the police were still looking for the suspect and actively investigating the crime.

Retailers are fighting back against people who buy up all the Pokemon TCG packs and other items just to resell them for a profit. Walmart has limited purchases on some Pokemon products, but GameStop took a more direct approach, issuing a warning that went viral. They announced they would ban anyone caught using a scale in their stores to weigh Pokemon card packs – a tactic scalpers use to identify potentially valuable contents. With Pokemon cards remaining incredibly popular, it’s unclear how The Pokemon Company and its retail partners will handle the ongoing high demand.

Even with a 4-9 record in the 2025 NFL season, the Bengals, led by Joe Burrow, are still trying to make the playoffs. They have a very important division game against the Ravens on Sunday, December 14th, at 1:00 PM Eastern time.
