In the town’s store, you might feel a tad confused due to the multitude of skills presented, each one vaguely defined and with a limit on how many you can carry as you run low on skill points.

In order to maintain a balanced skillset between traditional and contemporary approaches, I aim to allocate similar importance to each set of skills for both the veteran and novice hedgehogs. From the least crucial ability to the most critical one, these skills should be retained consistently.

As something’s value decreases, the less essential it seems for living, while when its value increases, the game becomes increasingly straightforward or simple.

These abilities are ranked especially according to how much they benefit going for S ranks or time attacks in general. It should also be noted that they only work in proper stages and not in challenges.

In this game, if you land on spikes, you lose your rings temporarily and need a moment to recover. However, with the ability called Sure-Footed, this situation is altered.

One key point to note is that it exhausts all your skill points, making it the sole ability you can utilize at a time. Consequently, there’s no room for any other abilities from this list while using it.

Besides this, you need to wait for 50 charges before you can utilize it, and it depletes those charges rapidly during boosting, making its usage barely more advantageous than improving your regular abilities.

Instead of Chaos Control, this action slows Sonic down along with everything else, making it effective primarily when precision in movement is challenging due to the complexity of a level’s segment.

Because it significantly slows you down, we would use this option only when faced with extremely challenging or difficult circumstances.

As a gamer, I’m about to get my hands on one of the initial unlockable skills, unique to the Modern stages. This is going to be fun!

Most times, you can effectively navigate around water by choosing the upper path or increasing your speed. However, this strategy is particularly beneficial when it’s necessary for you to be submerged underwater.

5 Drop Dash

For the Maniacs

It’s peculiar that this ability, which should logically be common to both Classic and Modern Sonic, is exclusive to Classic Sonic in the game. The surprise lies in the fact that it seems like it was built into Modern Sonic’s moveset rather than being a shared feature for both characters.

Conversely, it provides an immediate jump spin dash in the air, which delivers a quick burst of speed to help you regain your footing swiftly.

This ability is particularly valuable given that Classic features numerous methodical platforming sections where you must progress, and swiftly dash-dropping immediately following completion can help regain lost speed.

Spin dashing remains incredibly swift, but the drop dash compensates remarkably well for any loss of speed.

4 Blast Off

From a speedrunner’s point of view, this skill stands out as particularly beneficial due to its simplicity. The ‘Blast Off’ move involves hitting the boost button at the beginning of a level, and that’s all there is to it – it gets you moving quickly.

You might think it’s unnecessary, considering you can boost near the start of a stage anyway, but this gives way more speed.

Apart from immediately accelerating dramatically, this technique also offers several benefits. For instance, it allows for drifting through hoops which rapidly fills up the boost meter. Furthermore, it offers a significant edge against competitors who don’t possess this skill.

3 Speed Up

When it comes to speed, nothing beats Modern Sonic’s unique talent, which is primarily designed to boost his speed and performs very few other functions.

In simpler terms, the upcoming item on the list makes the original version of Sonic unnecessary, but he performs well on the modern platform.

In other words, there’s little more to add on this topic. It’s commonly employed in games that emphasize abilities, particularly given its compatibility with Medium/High Speed.

Going at ten times the speed of sound might feel cumbersome initially, but soon enough, achieving top-tier performance (S rank) will seem effortless.

The Long Spin Dash significantly increases the duration and intensity of your rapid acceleration.

Regardless of where you are at, this ability allows you to bypass nearly any jumping challenge in a game and soar above all obstacles without needing to play through the level conventionally.

1 Thunder Shield

Faster Than Lightning

With an exhilarating dual ability that’s definitely worth investing all your skill points, Long Spin Dash combined with Thunder Shield offers a powerful leap forward, followed by using your shield to traverse the entire level in a single bound. The added damage and ring magnetism are just additional perks at this point.

Navigating around barriers with the lightning shield, giving you a thrilling sense of mastery over the game; however, do watch out to avoid getting hit.

The only downside is that this takes a massive 70 skill points and can only be obtained once per respawn, but if you’re looking for speed, this is how you get it.
