Once you’ve completed the character setup in the game Avowed, you will then have the option to select from a choice of five Backgrounds, which aid in defining your character.
In the game Avowed, your character’s Backstory influences the dialogue options you have access to throughout the game and also decides what weapon you initially start with. So, does your Backstory significantly impact your gameplay experience, and which one should I choose for the best results?
What is your Background in Avowed?
Before diving deep into the various Backgrounds in the game Avowed, let me briefly explain what they entail. Primarily, your Background provides you with special conversation choices in numerous interactions throughout your gaming experience. While not every situation will allow you to pick these unique dialogue options, they do appear frequently and can lead to intriguing exchanges with the characters you’re engaging with – conversations you wouldn’t have heard otherwise.
Besides choosing your dialogue options, the Background you select in Avowed determines which weapon you begin the game with. This weapon will already be in your inventory at the start of the game, but you won’t be able to pick it up until five minutes into the gameplay. Although this might initially seem significant, it doesn’t necessarily mean much in terms of gameplay.
In the game Avowed, selecting a particular Backstory doesn’t restrict you to only using one type of weapon or fighting style. For instance, if you start with a melee weapon due to your Backstory, you can effortlessly switch to a ranged weapon as soon as you acquire one within the game. However, it’s also perfectly fine for you to stick with your Backstory’s preferred weapon if you wish to delve deeper into the RPG aspects of the game; this is entirely up to your preference.
To complete your Character’s Background, you’ll find a compelling backstory. Each Background comes with its own storyline that you can explore during character creation. However, this aspect won’t affect the gameplay of Avowed, so feel free to invest as much or as little time as you prefer in crafting your character’s history.

Best Background to choose in Avowed
In essence, your Background may not significantly impact the overall storyline of the game, ‘Avowed’. Initially, it influences the weapon you begin with, but within an hour or two into the game, you’ll have access to virtually all types of weapons available. These range from wands for spellcasting, a pistol and rifle, to various robust melee weapons.
In simpler terms, your Background choice won’t decide the main events in ‘Avowed’, but you’ll be able to get any weapon within the first couple of hours of playing. The options include wands, pistols, rifles, and numerous strong melee weapons.
The primary motive for picking a particular Backstory could be that it feels relatable or intriguing to you. For instance, I opted for Vanguard Scout because I found appealing the concept of being an emperor’s loyal operative, possessing abilities that extend beyond courtly affairs. Nevertheless, it’s important to note that every Backstory initiates the game in a similar manner, so the narrative backdrop serves more as a personal reminder throughout your journey.
Typically, the distinctive conversation choices for each Background are based on its background story. Consequently, selecting the War Hero Background often results in dialogue options discussing courage, standing firm during conflict, or similar themes related to war experiences.
To truly immerse yourself in the RPG aspects of Avowed, select a Background that presents an engaging starting weapon and backstory that appeals to you most. Among the various starting weapon options, the Mace stands out as a strong choice due to its high damage potential and decent attack speed without excessive stamina consumption.
In the game Avowed, while the Sword and Axe are powerful for traditional melee combat, they aren’t necessarily the best choices for all fights. Instead, you might find more success with less common weapons like the Spear and Dagger, but keep in mind that these weapons may not be as versatile across different encounters.
