In anime, heroes don’t always have to fit the traditional “goody-two-shoes” mold. Occasionally, characters who strive to improve the world can still evoke a sense of fear or awe in the audience.
Sometimes, the behaviors and abilities of certain beloved anime characters can make viewers feel uneasy. Fortunately, as they usually stand for what is right, fans can rest assured that their favorites won’t engage in confrontations with these unsettling protagonists.
8. Shino Aburame
His Bug Powers Were Icky Yet Satisfying
It’s unfortunate how Shino’s character evolved into a comedic role in “Naruto: Shippuden,” diminishing the strong impression he made prior to the time leap. During this period, we saw the capabilities of chakra insects through him, but his abilities were somewhat unsettling in nature.
It was astonishing to understand that the insects Shino depended on were actually part of him, living off his energy to create a mutual bond. This discovery gave fans goosebumps and made it challenging to imagine taking his place, even after his character met an untimely end in the series Naruto: Shippuden.
7. Pannacotta Fugo
Purple Haze Is A Stand So Scary And Power That He Had To Be Written Out Of Golden Wind
In the world of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Fugo stands out as an exceptionally distinctive character, making a solitary but impactful appearance. This encounter left viewers in awe, offering a glimpse into the sheer terror of his stand’s capabilities. The enigmatic Purple Haze, a Stand that leaves an indelible impression on fans, is characterized by its unnerving habit of foaming at the mouth and being notoriously difficult for its user to handle.
This Stand’s power is devastatingly effective; it spreads a lethal virus rapidly, affecting both people and objects. It’s so potent that Fugo’s character had to be removed from the series for future battles to maintain an element of intrigue, which seems like a reasonable decision.
6. Shuu Tsukiyama
His Obsession With Kaneki Is A Bit Too Intense
The Tokyo Ghoul series might have gained more popularity if not for some missteps in its anime adaptations. However, the initial anime did an excellent job of introducing a host of memorable characters, such as Shuu Tsukiyama. This character is marked by his dangerous obsession with consuming Kaneki and feigns joining his group for help, all while secretly aiming to achieve his goal.
Initially, this character maintained an unusual affection for Kaneki, but over the passage of time, that fondness grew stronger. Occasionally, they’d extend a helping hand to Kaneki. Yet, their obsession remained unsettlingly intense, and when it was believed that Kaneki had perished after the time jump, their desire to live faded away.
5. Mayuri Kurotsuchi
A Mad Scientist Who’s Experiments Can Be A Bit Too Inhumane
In the show “Bleach,” there’s an abundance of unusual characters that are delightful to engage with. Yet, when it comes to Mayuri, he manages to send chills through the audience even though he tirelessly fights to safeguard Soul Society from its invaders repeatedly.
This eccentric scientist conducts cruel experiments, even resuscitating the deceased and employing hideous toxins to liquefy adversaries from within. His unsettling smile and eerie persona create a protagonist that viewers reluctantly admire, resulting in engaging battles.
4. Yuno Gasai
The Quintessential Yandere Character Who Serves As Both A Protagonist And Antagonist
The charm of “Future Diary” lies in its intriguing concept, where participants in this sinister game possess diaries capable of predicting the future in unique ways. The primary character is given a straightforward diary that achieves this purpose in a plain fashion, while Yuno’s diary reflects her disturbed personality by monitoring Yukiteru’s activities.
Primarily, Yuno functions as a supporting lead character, often assisting her companion in various ways. However, her fixation can escalate to alarming extremes, compelling Yukiteru to keep his distance from her volatile nature as much as feasible. She is an outstanding and memorable representation of the unsettling yandere persona, ready to perform appalling deeds to demonstrate her devotion to the object of her affection.
3. Denji
A Protagonist With Seemingly Laughable Motivations Who Transforms Into A Bloodthirsty Devil
In simpler terms, Denji is a young man who’s hit hard times, often humiliating himself for cash to clear his debts. But when he gets double-crossed, he strikes a deal with Pochita, transforming into the Chainsaw Devil. This new form lets him destroy anything that dares block his path.
Witnessing Denji transform into an utterly ferocious state is downright chilling, particularly during tense scenes in the anime where he confronts the Eternity Devil. In this battle, he consumes his victims’ blood to recover and clashes with him for a grueling three days. The moment when his enemy extends an offer of his heart to end the torment is spine-tingling, showcasing how ruthless and uncontrolled the Chainsaw Devil can become when given free rein.
2. Eren Jaeger
He Becomes Truly Scary After The Timeskip
In most parts of “Attack on Titan”, Eren Jaeger appears as an ordinary hero who never seems to make mistakes. However, following the story’s time leap, viewers are introduced to a chilling aspect of his character that makes him one of the most unsettling and captivating anime characters ever created.
The grim expression on his face following the announcement of war against Paradis Island continues to instill fear in viewers even today. Yet, nothing compares to the gruesome genocide he carried out with The Rumbling, a moment that sent shivers down spines before he proceeded to wipe out 80% of humanity’s population. This horrific act was only halted when his closest friends intervened and stopped him.
1. Guts
The Black Swordsman Is Downright Sinister Back When He’s Introduced
In the initial appearance of the Black Swordsman within “Berserk”, his bloodthirsty demeanor can send a shiver down your spine. His masterful handling of his distinctive blade, coupled with his apparent enjoyment of slaying the Snake Lord, gives off an air of insanity.
In the course of my observation, it wasn’t until the Golden Age arc that I truly came to know Guts – a character whose story arc stands among the most captivating in anime history. The horrors he endured are evident in his transformation into a chilling, vengeful protagonist, his every action driven by the desire to exact retribution upon Griffith.
