Monster Hunter Wilds: Best Skills for Defense

The following are considered some of the best defense-oriented skills:

  • Defense Boost
  • Constitution
  • Guard
  • Heroics
  • Self-Improvement

1) Defense Boost

In simpler terms, Defense Boost is a skill designed for defensive scenarios that enhances your defense attribute. It has seven varying levels, with the early ones giving a straight-up defense increase. As you progress through the higher levels, extra perks are added, such as elemental resistances. By reaching level 7, you’ll gain a 10% defense boost and an additional +35 bonus, together with a +5 resistance to all elements.

2) Constitution

In the thrilling world of Monster Hunter Wilds, having stamina is absolutely crucial! Whether it’s unleashing powerful combos with Dual Blades or triggering Demon Mode, endurance is key. But don’t forget about those defensive moves too, like swiftly evading attacks or sprinting to safety – these are equally important. Since some weapon types don’t have guarding or blocking capabilities, dodging becomes your lifeline for avoiding damage. As a dedicated fan, I can’t stress enough the importance of mastering this skill!

This Constitution ability lessens the rate at which stamina is drained during dodging, blocking, or specific actions. It has five different skill levels, with level one decreasing stamina depletion by 10%. As you progress through the levels, the stat boost grows and maxes out at a reduction of 50% at level 5.

3) Guard

Protecting oneself is essential when battling powerful monsters as it enables you to ward off their attacks. However, this action can dull your weapon’s edge and drain your stamina. Not every weapon supports this protection, so if you’re primarily using a weapon that does, such as the Great Sword or Sword and Shield, the Guard skill significantly boosts your defensive capabilities.

Reducing stamina drain and minimizing knockbacks are features of the Guard skill when shielding. This skill comes in three tiers; the highest level, Level 3 Guard, significantly lessens attack impact and slashes your stamina depletion by half. To further enhance your defense, consider adding the ‘Guard Up’ skill to your arsenal. It empowers you to block even those attacks that usually cannot be deflected.

4) Heroics

Heroics is a crucial ability that amplifies both offensive and defensive capabilities when your health is running low. This ability kicks in when your Health Points (HP) drop below 35% or lower, drastically increasing your attack and defense strength. The skill offers five distinct levels, with the impact growing stronger as you progress to higher levels. In critical situations, Heroics empowers you to counterattack, using its enhanced stats to help stave off the possibility of fainting.

5) Self-Improvement

Enhancing Yourself is a distinctive ability that enhances both offense and defense while on a mission or quest. This talent becomes active as soon as you embark on a quest, gradually improving your stats over time, with the maximum enhancement occurring after 30 minutes. The ability offers boosts at the 5-minute, 10-minute, 20-minute, and 30-minute marks of the mission.

In simpler terms, this skill gives you a bonus of +4 to your attacks (except during the first 5 minutes) and +5 to your defenses for each time-mark. In total, it enhances your defense by +20 and attack by +12. Although primarily defensive in nature, it also provides a substantial increase to your attacks, making it one of the most effective skills for prolonged battles.
