As a seasoned adventurer who has braved the unforgiving wilderness of Don’t Starve Together, I have come to appreciate the unique strengths each character brings to the table. Among them all, Wickerbottom stands out as an exceptional choice for resource collection and strategic gameplay.
Don’t Starve Together represents the multiplayer adaptation of the exceptionally singular and captivating game known as Don’t Starve. In this game, you collaborate with friends to assume various characters and strive to endure in The Constant. Each character possesses distinct abilities, strengths, and vulnerabilities, which can make survival more manageable when a diverse group of characters is employed.
Due to the distinct and individual traits of every character, choosing the optimal one can sometimes be challenging as it depends on personal playstyle. However, certain characters might seem more advantageous than others. Each character has their drawbacks as well as strengths, making it essential for players to find the one that best fits their style.
25. Wes
Does Less Damage And Needs More Food
- First Appearance: Don’t Starve Together
- Health: 75
- Hunger: 75
- Sanity: 75
- Perk: Incapable of talking and is very fragile. Inflates balloons that explode when they take damage.
Characters like Wes in the game “Don’t Starve” are ideal for players seeking a tougher gaming experience. However, if you’re not keen on ramping up the difficulty, you might prefer to avoid him. Compared to most other characters, Wes deals 25% less damage and becomes hungry 25% faster.
Wes possesses an exceptional talent for producing balloons that serve dual purposes: diverting foes and inflicting minimal harm when burst. This utility is limitless, but each use comes at the cost of 5 sanity points. Since he’s non-verbal, players won’t receive survival tips or interact with other characters. In essence, surviving as Wes can be quite challenging. Whether you play alone or in a group, Wes may hinder rather than help with survivability, posing a potential risk to the team.
24. Maxwell
Low Health and Perk Punishment
- First Appearance: Don’t Starve
- Health: 75
- Hunger: 150
- Sanity: 200
- Perk: Can conjure shadow puppets.
Initially portrayed as the antagonist in the game ‘Don’t Starve‘, Maxwell later found himself ensnared within The Constant. Despite being an engaging character due to his ability to conjure Shadow Puppets via the Codex Umbra and his manageable sanity, he lacks the strength exhibited by numerous other characters.
Additionally, he initiates The Constant with his belongings, including the Dark Sword, Night Armor, Purple Gem, a bit of Nightmare Fuel, and his tome.
The Shadow Puppets have a lifespan of approximately 2.5 days before they perish. When summoning these puppets, Maxwell will incur a cost of 15 Health, 2 Nightmare Fuel, and 55 Maximum Sanity. Although it’s gratifying to see the adversary ensnared in The Constant, he isn’t a character with much play value due to his low health. This can make exploration challenging unless players can maintain his armor effectively.
23. Wilson
Freezing Resistance and Insight Ability
- First Appearance: Don’t Starve
- Health: 150
- Hunger: 150
- Sanity: 200
- Perk: Will grow a large beard
In the game, Wilson is the initial character players will control, as he’s the only one available when starting out. For quite some time, Wilson has served as the default character with limited abilities, primarily his beard. This beard feature can prove beneficial during winter, providing a player with 135 units of insulation against Freezing. Additionally, the beard can be trimmed to collect Beard Hair, which is essential for creating a Meat Effigy.
The Effigy will restore 10 Sanity as well as resurrect the player on Death.
Fortunately, an upgrade eventually equipped Wilson with unique skills, making it ideal for beginners. As gamers delve into the game, Wilson can now collect ‘Insights’, which can be utilized to learn new abilities in sections like “Beard”, “Torch”, and “Alchemy”.
22. Wortox
Resistant to Negative Effects But Must Eat Souls to Survive
- First Appearance: Don’t Starve Together
- Health: 200
- Hunger: 175
- Sanity: 150
- Perk: Can gain souls, release them to heal, or eat them to gain hunger but craves souls as food and takes less healing from other food items.
Wortox is an additional character obtained through downloadable content, who previously collaborated with Krampus until his fortunes took a grim turn. What sets Wortox apart is that he mainly consumes Souls, which are dropped by players or creatures when they die. Unlike other characters, Wortox only regains half the health from food consumption.
In simpler terms, Wortox possesses the ability to move short distances by utilizing Souls, and his mental state remains relatively stable when surrounded by monsters. Nevertheless, due to his constant hunger for Souls, he frequently feels the need to satisfy this craving. Consuming regular food partially alleviates his needs, but it doesn’t entirely fulfill him.
Entities will manifest upon the death of anything within a 20-unit radius of Wortox, however, they must be harvested within a mere 10 seconds. Therefore, it’s essential for players to move swiftly and act fast.
21. Wurt
Great Merm-Related Buffs But Tough to Feed
- First Appearance: Don’t Starve Together
- Health: 150 (Or 250)
- Hunger: 200 (Or 250)
- Sanity: 150 (Or 200)
- Perk: Can befriend Merms and make disguises for teammates but can’t eat meat or non-vegetables and loses sanity when holding them.
As a gamer, I’ve got this fresh new character in my game world, named Wurt. She’s a young Merm, and she’s not just any character – she’s a DLC addition! What makes her stand out is her ability to build Merm homes and marshy turf. That’s right, I can now create a cozy underwater abode for my aquatic friends.
Having Guards reside in your home and becoming friends with them will make players feel safer since they can assist during battles or help with chores. Unlike other non-animal characters like Wortox, Wurt won’t be targeted by creatures such as Bunnymen. However, Wurt has a few drawbacks: being a vegetarian poses challenges in certain situations, but she can eat durian without any negative effects. Unfortunately, her relationship with pigs is strained – they will immediately attack her, and she holds a strong dislike for them. Despite using disguises, Wurt cannot form friendships or engage in trade with pigs or the Pig King.
Although she seems an intriguing character, her true value is realized towards the latter stages of the game, after she has made friends with the guards, woven tapestries, and adorned the floors with marshy vegetation.
20. Woodie
Can Transform and Chop Trees Quickly, But Serious Stat Depletion Post-Transformation
- First Appearance: Don’t Starve
- Health: 150
- Hunger: 150
- Sanity: 200
- Perk: Has a sentient axe with unlimited durability and can transform into a Werebeaver but when his transformations end his stats are diminished greatly.
In “The Constant,” Woodie initially wields an extraordinary axe called Lucy. This peculiar tool frequently communicates with him, urging him on to fell trees. Compared to a typical axe, Lucy has the ability to swiftly bring down trees without ever succumbing to damage.
In the event of a full moon or following consumption of a Totem, the character Woodie can morph into one of three distinct creatures if he consumes two Monster Foods within a span of 4 minutes. The possible transformations are a Werebeaver, a Weremoose, or a Weregoose. A gauge known as the Wereness meter will appear on-screen, and when it depletes to zero, players will revert back to Woodie. Upon returning to his normal state, Woodie’s hunger level will be significantly reduced, so it’s wise for gamers to gather food supplies beforehand.
19. Wonkey
Neutralizes Character Nerfs and Can Run, But Aggros Many Mobs
- First Appearance: Don’t Starve Together
- Health: 125
- Hunger: 175
- Sanity: 100
- Perk: Doesn’t aggro Powder Monkeys or Prime Mates, can run 33 percent faster but is hostile to other mobs.
Players can discover a hidden character named Wonkey by amassing ten Accursed Trinkets in their inventory. Unlike other characters, Wonkey isn’t selectable from the menu as it represents more of a curse than an independent entity. Instead, the player’s chosen character will be transformed into Wonkey. This transformation eliminates any disadvantages the character may have had, such as Wigfrid being able to consume non-meat items or Wurt eating meat. The unique aspect of Wonkey lies in this ability to nullify character weaknesses, making it an attractive choice despite not having any specific advantages.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that my beloved companion, Wonkey, enjoys perpetual privileges on Moon Quay island. He steers clear of confrontations with Powder Monkeys and Prime Mates, but beware, Pigs and Bunnymen view him as an adversary. Fortunately, they can still engage in peaceful trade with the Pig King.
18. Willow
No Fire Damage and Has Bernie’s Protection, But Major Arson Tendencies
- First Appearance: Don’t Starve Together
- Health: 150
- Hunger: 150
- Sanity: 120
- Perk: Has a lighter and is immune to fire damage but will light fires whenever she gets too nervous.
In the beginning of the game, Willow carries along her teddy bear and a useful lighter. The lighter serves as a tool for igniting fires, which in turn gradually boosts Willow’s sanity. Players can choose to extinguish these fires if they wish, but it’s worth noting that Willow remains undamaged by fire. Bernie, her loyal teddy bear, offers both comfort and sanity to Willow. If Bernie is placed near Willow when her sanity drops to 15% or below, he expands in size and becomes a helpful ally in fighting off mobs or bosses.
If Willow’s mental state weakens and she carries a lighter in her possessions, there’s a chance she’ll spontaneously ignite small fires around herself. These flames won’t harm her, but they could lead to significant complications based on the players nearby. Despite being one of the characters players unlock later, Willow is generally well-liked. However, she can be tricky to manage if players neglect her needs.
17. Woodlegs (Single Player Only)
Brilliant Early Game Items But Can’t Be On or Near Land
- First Appearance: Shipwrecked DLC
- Health: 150
- Hunger: 150
- Sanity: 120
- Perk: Can craft a special boat and sniff out treasure, but takes sanity damage while on or near land.
Woodlegs might be one of the most advantageous characters right from the get-go, boasting an abundance of handy items in his possession. His signature item, “Sea Legs,” shares the same durability as an Armored Boat and offers an infinite cannon to fend off adversaries. Additionally, his unique headgear allows him to detect nearby hidden treasures. To start, the location of the nearest treasure will be disclosed to him. He can serve as a valuable asset in hunting for precious items, and his craftable ship packs quite a punch.
Regrettably, Woodlegs significantly loses his composure when he’s on land (or even close to a shore), which renders him challenging to utilize during the initial stages of the game. Players must be vigilant and manage his rapidly depleting sanity in the early days.
16. Wilba (Single Player Only)
Great For Werepig Relations But Difficult Sanity Control
- First Appearance: Hamlet DLC
- Health: 150
- Hunger: 200
- Sanity: 100
- Perk: Has a special item that keeps her from transforming into a Werepig. Can befriend other pigs but is afraid of the dark.
If players find themselves constantly under attack or harassed by Pigs while collecting resources nearby, they might want to consider introducing Wilba into their game. This distinctive character is the daughter of the Pig Queen, making her swine nobility. By gaining her favor, she can retrieve items from Pig Villages, and at times, the inhabitants may even bestow basic resources and gifts upon this Princess. Having her as an ally could prove beneficial for players looking to establish themselves near a Pig Homestead.
Sadly, she has an intense fear of the dark, which causes her sanity to deplete at an accelerated rate during nighttime hours. Her sanity reserves are also quite limited, making it simpler for her to succumb to insanity. Despite being equipped with a useful necklace that prevents her from transforming into a Werepig, this artifact instead drains her sanity over time. Although she has unique qualities and is valuable, maintaining her sanity can be challenging.
15. Wilbur (Single Player Only)
Slow Walk Speed but Can Run and Produce Manure
- First Appearance: Shipwrecked DLC
- Health: 125
- Hunger: 175
- Sanity: 150
- Perk: Can run fast but has a slower base speed. Is an ally to Prime Apes but cannot talk.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share my excitement about this little charmer, Wilbur the monkey! In the right hands, he’s not just adorable, but incredibly useful. What sets him apart from others is his unique pair of talents that give him an edge over human counterparts.
Regrettably, Wilbur lacks the ability to talk, making effective communication quite challenging. Additionally, he moves slower when not in motion, which could pose difficulties in situations demanding agility. Nevertheless, disregarding these hindrances, his exceptional speed during running and self-contained manure storage make him a more robust survivor compared to many others.
14. Wheeler (Single Player Only)
Quick and Resourceful, But Easily Killed
- First Appearance:Hamlet DLC
- Health: 100
- Hunger: 150
- Sanity: 200
- Perk: Can easily track items, is faster, and has an air horn, but holds less than other players.
The Intrepid Explorer” is a valuable asset for any group still alive. She carries a unique horn that blasts objects at adversaries as she ventures into uncharted territories. Her Navigadget allows her to pinpoint resources of all kinds, simply by placing a resource within it, and the device will guide her towards nearby ones. Additionally, Wheeler is agile and can dodge obstacles, though this skill takes 1.5 seconds to recharge. During the animation of dodging, she’ll remain invincible from harm.
Wheeler does have some downsides, with a smaller health pool than most and a fairly small inventory at only 12 slots. Players need more storage space with her, and she’s a bit fragile but should have no problem surviving with some solid armor and her handy dodge ability.
13. Wanda
No Health Bar But Becomes Very Nerfed When Old
- First Appearance:Don’t Starve Together
- Health: N/A
- Hunger: 175
- Sanity: 200
- Perk: She has no health bar, instead her time span is dependent on her age.
In September 2021, Wanda was acquainted with the game “Don’t Starve Together.” Unlike the other characters she has encountered before, Wanda stands out distinctly. Unlike them, who have adjustable or vulnerable health stats, Wanda doesn’t have any health at all. Instead, she possesses a lifespan meter that resembles a clock. Initially set to 20, it can go up to 80. If Wanda manages to reach 80 on this meter, the game concludes with her demise. Fortunately, players aren’t expected to win the game within this time limit.
Wanda possesses a distinctive feature known as “Clocksmithy,” a crafting option that enables her to create seven exclusive items. One of these items is the Ageless Watch, which rewinds her life by eight years. Given that each in-game day represents 12 years of Wanda’s life, she can be challenging to manipulate effectively. However, with careful planning, players can capitalize on her unique trait – the absence of a health bar – for their benefit.
Despite not always resulting in immediate injury, every blow against her reduces her lifespan by a fraction, with the equivalent of 0.4 years being subtracted for each unit of damage sustained. One significant drawback to Wanda is that as she ages, she becomes less capable of handling heavy objects, deals less damage, feels more fatigued and weak, and can potentially lose many more years of her life when wounded.
12. Walani
Early Game Exploration and Resilient Sanity, But Hunger Drains Quickly
- First Appearance:Shipwrecked DLC
- Health: 120
- Hunger: 200
- Sanity: 200
- Perk: Starts with a surfboard that she can re-craft, and dries quicker than other characters, but her hunger drains 10 percent faster.
Walani arrives equipped with an innovative exploration device resembling a surfboard. This tool enables players to traverse the waters swiftly during the initial stages, bypassing the requirement to construct a boat. Her mental stability degrades at a relatively gradual pace, making her an ideal character for novice gamers. However, she does have certain limitations that may prove irritating for some users.
Firstly, her Health level is significantly lower than typical characters, and her Hunger decreases at a rate 10% faster than usual. While it’s beneficial that her Sanity depletes slowly, it requires extra effort to restore it fully.
11. WX-78
Weak To Rain But Huge Late Game Upgrades
- First Appearance:Don’t Starve
- Health: 100 (Upgradeable to 400)
- Hunger: 100 (Upgradeable to 200)
- Sanity: 100 (Upgradeable to 300)
- Perk: Can be upgraded to increase stats. Immune to freezing but takes damage in rain and water.
The robot character, WX-78, stands out due to its non-human nature, which influences its portrayal significantly. While it can consume gears to enhance its abilities, these components aren’t always readily available and might be more beneficial for other constructs, such as an Ice Box. Moreover, if WX-78 is caught in the rain, it will sustain damage until it finds shelter.
When lightning strikes, it reduces their sanity by 33 points but boosts their health by 100. For those diligent gamers aiming to transform into a potent character in Don’t Starve, WX-78 is the preferred selection.
10. Webber
Doesn’t Aggro Spiders and Can Stay Warm, But Causes Hostility in Other Mobs
- First Appearance:Reign of Giants DLC
- Health: 175
- Hunger: 175
- Sanity: 100
- Perk: Can befriend spiders and grow a silky beard for warmth.
Webber resides within a spider that initially intended to consume him, but now he has formed friendships with spiders scattered across The Constant. This friendship is beneficial for resource gathering and preventing overruns. However, his symbiotic relationship with the spider means other creatures like pigs view him as an enemy, making exploration of the world challenging at times.
Webber is able to consume foods derived from monsters, providing him nourishment and sustenance. Additionally, he’ll develop a luxuriant beard that provides insulation against the chill, which can be trimmed using a razor for silk.
To summon Webber within the “Reign of Giants” DLC expansion, gamers must first locate Webber’s skull by defeating Spiders. Upon finding it, they should bury this skull in a burial mound. Following its burial, lightning will strike the location, resurrecting him, enabling players to control him moving forward.
9. Warly
Portable Crockpot and Ingredients But Needs Meal Variety
- First Appearance:Shipwrecked DLC
- Health: 150
- Hunger: 250
- Sanity: 200
- Perk: Can cook special items and has a portable crockpot but has harsher negative effects from food and doesn’t heal as much when eating it.
In The Constant, Warly previously worked as a chef. Upon entering the game, Warly first appears with a Portable Crockpot and some edible ingredients. This is advantageous because Warly refuses to eat anything that hasn’t been cooked. However, players are not required to create a new crockpot, as Warly can carry his along wherever he goes.
He takes pleasure in sampling various dishes and can recall his meals for about 40 hours or more. Consequently, if he eats the same dish twice within that span, he will only experience a fraction of its usual effects. For strategic players, it may be beneficial to group Warly with Wormwood, as they make an effective duo in gameplay.
8. Wolfgang
Damage Scales With Food But Loses Substantial Sanity Around Monsters
- First Appearance:Don’t Starve
- Health: 150 (Up to 300)
- Hunger: 300
- Sanity: 200
- Perk: Will get stronger when his stomach is full, but is afraid of monsters and darkness.
Wolfgang is a formidable figure in the game, but his strength relies on being consistently fed by players. The more he eats (compared to other characters), the greater his destructive capacity becomes. However, as hunger sets in, his power gradually wanes.
Additionally, Wolfgang has an intense fear of the darkness and becomes unstable more quickly than other characters in the presence of monsters. Due to potential scarcity of food, he may prove difficult, yet he is definitely worth the effort.
7. Wendy
Wendy Is Weak, But Abigail Is Extremely Useful
- First Appearance:Don’t Starve
- Health: 150
- Hunger: 150
- Sanity: 200
- Perk: Can summon her deceased sister to aid in combat and isn’t afraid of the dark, but takes a damage penalty when attacking foes.
For novice players of the game “Don’t Starve Together,” Wendy stands out as one of the most beneficial characters. She may seem unassuming initially and lacks significant strength, making her journey more difficult, but her spectral sibling Abigail proves to be a tremendous asset.
As a gamer, I can call upon Abigail when one of my foes meets its end near her Flower. This summoned ally stands bravely by me in combat, extending my survival span while I gather resources and enemy loot. Sadly, Abigail isn’t invincible; she can fall, but fear not, for I can bring her back after a brief cooldown period. And as for Wendy, she doesn’t quiver at the sight of darkness – she takes 25% less Sanity damage during nights and when venturing into dimly lit areas.
6. Wickerbottom
Great For Resource Collecting
- First Appearance:Don’t Starve
- Health: 150
- Hunger: 150
- Sanity: 250
- Perk: Can craft without the Science Machine and make magical books but is incapable of sleeping and hates it when food spoils.
Wickerbottom possesses remarkable abilities, as she’s capable of fabricating items without requiring a Science Machine. Among these skills, she can even manufacture books. These books hold unique properties; they can attract birds, cause plants and crops to grow faster, and even summon random lightning bolts close by. These talents prove incredibly beneficial during gameplay, especially in the early stages, as Wickerbottom doesn’t necessitate a Science Machine for her crafting prowess.
Despite draining a good chunk of her mental resources, these books offer invaluable insights for various elements of the game, such as enhancing crop growth. However, she’s restricted to reading each book no more than five times, so it’s important to utilize this skill thoughtfully.
