As a long-time Shadow the Hedgehog fanatic who’s seen him grow from a Sonic clone to an ultimate lifeform with his unique powers and personality, I must say that the Doom Powers in Sonic X Shadow Generations have taken my admiration for this enigmatic character to new heights.
Initially, when Shadow the Hedgehog appeared in Sonic Adventure 2, his moveset was nearly identical to Sonic’s. Since then, this advanced lifeform has acquired a diverse set of skills, ranging from harnessing different Chaos powers to wielding weapons. His original name, Terios, is Greek for “reflection of,” hinting that his moveset mirrored Sonic as well.
In the game “Sonic X Shadow Generations,” Shadow’s recent enhancements take shape as a collection of abilities referred to as “Doom Powers.” These powers are bestowed upon Shadow because of his genetic links to an extraterrestrial race called the Black Arms. The campaign for “Shadow Generations” showcases five distinct powers, with some being more beneficial, practical, or just more entertaining to employ compared to others.
5 Doom Blast
Blast Your Enemies Into Oblivion
Among all these skills, the Doom Blast stands out as the most straightforward one. With this power, Shadow can lift big foes into the air and guide them towards his chosen target, then teleport to where the enemy lands. This move comes in handy for exploring hidden routes, destroying items, or swiftly eliminating a string of enemies at once.
On the contrary, the Doom Blast isn’t versatile in terms of usage beyond its primary function, and it limits the player’s creativity as targeting markers are displayed on the screen to guide aiming. Additionally, it’s one of the moves that significantly slows down gameplay, forcing players to pause for a brief moment to align their shot before propelling the enemy in the desired direction.
4 Doom Surf
Sail Across The Seas With Shadow
With this ability, Shadow can create a manta-ray-like entity to traverse water bodies, proving extremely beneficial for investigating regions within the game’s central world, as well as several stages that incorporate this feature. In addition, Shadow can employ his swift dash to collide the Doom Surf into nearby barriers and objects, which is utilized in one of the game’s boss fights to inflict damage on the adversary.
Using the Doom Surf is often enjoyable due to its smooth maneuverability, but sometimes it may seem a bit slower than desired. When surfing as Shadow, the boost function is deactivated, causing the player to move at a constant speed on water. Activating boost upon landing provides an initial speed increase, however, allowing boost throughout the entire ride could enhance the overall user experience and offer additional speedrunning opportunities.
3 Doom Morph
Surrender To The Doom DNA
Mastering the Doom Morph may take some initial patience, but it’s incredibly useful once you get the hang of it! By releasing a Morph Ball prematurely during a swing, Shadow will dash swiftly towards the ball and emerge from its opposite side at great speed. This technique enables players to soar diagonally or vertically upwards with precise timing.
In just one stage – Chaos Island – there’s an abundance of creative concepts that are packed into such a brief span. The Doom Morph offers a variety of functions: it lets you jump off surfaces, navigate through the air with Morph Balls, move along walls and ceilings, and achieve high speeds by rapid-firing the boost button. Additionally, it plays a role in a boss battle, causing damage to the enemy when boosted. Mastering the Doom Morph is truly a delightful experience.
2 Doom Spears
Fire Away At Up To Five Targets
Shadow has been well-versed in wielding spears as his weapon of choice, with his Chaos Spears being an integral part of his arsenal for quite some time. Yet, Sonic X Shadow Generations elevates the use of these weapons, bestowing him with the power to discharge several simultaneously. By maintaining the button press, the Doom Spears enable Shadow to target as many as five enemies concurrently, unleashing a barrage at them all once released.
Spears in this game can be used flexibly at virtually any point during play, without requiring Shadow to halt running before attacking. This skill is incredibly versatile and useful across most levels: it can deflect incoming attacks, disable electric opponents, activate switches, manipulate unique stage elements, or interact with various mechanisms. The synergy between Shadow and spears in Shadow Generations remains unmatched by any other creative ideas presented within the game.
1 Doom Wings
Overcome Every Obstacle With This Power
In this game, the Doom Wings are an extraordinary, unforeseen enhancement that truly sets it apart. Seeing them in the SGF trailer left the gaming community utterly astounded. The game Shadow Generations introduces players to these wings in one of the early stages, only to have them reappear in the final stage and then become accessible in every level once the game is completed. When Shadow accumulates fifty rings, simultaneously pressing both rapid-movement keys will cause a pair of sinister wings to materialize on his back.
Flying above stages using the Doom Wings offers a unique sensation unlike any other, providing stunning views along the way. This ability allows players to locate hidden collectibles, decimate groups of enemies simultaneously, or bypass certain sections of the stage. It significantly expands the gameplay experience, especially for speedrunners, as each stage comes with two modes: Doom Wings On/Off. Some may consider the wings an excessive or radical feature, but for a character once armed with assault rifles and bent on human destruction, it adds a whole new layer to the game.
