Best Dragon-Type Pokemon in Legends Z-A: Stats, Movesets & Locations

In Pokémon Legends Z-A, Dragon-type Pokémon are known for being incredibly strong, often including powerful pseudo-legendary and legendary species. They have amazing attacks and moves, but many are vulnerable to their own Dragon-type attacks, as well as Ice and Fairy-type moves. Fairy-types are particularly effective, as they completely resist Dragon-type attacks.

Looking to become a master of Dragon-type Pokémon in Legends Z-A? This guide covers the very best Dragon Pokémon in the game, with tips on how to train them and build powerful movesets for both player-versus-player (PvP) and player-versus-environment (PvE) battles.

BST (Base Stat Total) is read from left to right as follows: HP/Atk /Sp. Atk/Def/Sp. Def/Speed

Zygarde

Legendary, And For A Good Reason

  • Best EV Spread: 252 HP/ 252 Atk/ 4 Sp. Def
  • Best Nature: Impish (Defense ↑ – Sp. Attack ↓)
  • Rec Moveset: Thousand Arrows, Thousand Waves, Land’s Wrath, Core Enforcer
  • Mega Stone Location: (Zygardite) Acquired during the Final Mission in Legends Z-A Main Story
  • BST: 216/100/121/91/95/85
  • BST (Mega): 216/70/91/216/85/100

Zygarde is the featured legendary Pokémon in Pokémon Legends Z-A, and is considered one of the most powerful Pokémon ever created. Even though it’s too strong for competitive play and isn’t allowed in end-game battles, it’s undeniably the strongest Dragon-type Pokémon in the game.

50% Forme

Zygarde is incredibly powerful even in its incomplete form, and at full power, it transforms into a massive, mechanical beast. Mega Evolution further boosts Zygarde’s already impressive strength, raising its stats to almost 800, making it one of the most powerful Pokémon—even stronger than Arceus. While most of its best moves are physical attacks, it’s still smart to focus your training on physical stats, despite its strongest move being a special attack.

In Pokemon Legends Z-A, you can unlock Zygarde by first completing the main story. Then, begin the After-Story quest called ‘Infinite A-Z Royale.’ After winning five matches, Lysandre will appear and tell you about The One Who Gives and The One Who Takes. Finish both of these quests and defeat Lysandre in battle to open up the opportunity to battle Zygarde. If you win against Zygarde, you’ll be able to catch this Legendary Pokemon.

Garchomp

The Best Dragon-type For PvP & PvE

  • Best EV Spread: 252 HP/ 252 Atk/ 4 Sp. Def
  • Best Nature: Adamant (Attack ↑ – Sp. Attack ↓)
  • Rec Moveset: Fire Fang, Earthquake, Dragon Claw, Dragon Rush
  • Mega Stone Location: (Garchompite) Bought in the Sone Emporium for 70k.
  • BST: 108/130/95/80/85/102
  • BST (Mega): 108/170/115/120/95/92

Mega Garchomp is likely the strongest Dragon-type Pokemon for player-versus-player (PvP) battles in Pokemon Legends Z-A, and it’s a solid choice for playing through the main story too. It has incredibly high Attack power, letting it knock out almost any opponent in a single hit – with Drampa being a possible exception.

When Garchomp Mega Evolves, it becomes incredibly powerful and can quickly defeat most opponents. While a few Pokémon like Xerneas, Mega Clefable, and Drampa can beat it, Mega Garchomp is faster than most other Dragon-types, allowing it to attack first with a strong, powerful move and often win before they can even respond.

Getting a Garchomp requires finding and leveling up Gible, but Gible is very rare, so it can be tough to find one. Once you do, though, it’s a powerful ally that will make getting through the main game easy, and a strong Garchomp is a formidable opponent in ranked battles.

Mega Charizard X

Its Reign Of Terror Has Begun (Again)

  • Best EV Spread: 252 HP/ 252 Sp. Atk/ 4 Sp. Def
  • Best Nature: Adamant (Attack ↑ – Sp. Attack ↓)
  • Rec Moveset: Dragon Claw, Flamethrower, Thunder Punch, Flare Blitz
  • Mega Stone Location: (Charizardite X) Purchased at the Stone Emporium for 100K.
  • BST: 78/84/78/109/85/100
  • BST (Mega): 78/130/111/130/85/100

Mega Charizard X was one of the earliest Mega Evolutions introduced, and it quickly became a dominant force in competitive battling until Mega Evolutions were no longer used as the main battle mechanic. It boosts Charizard’s physical attack power and becomes a powerful Fire and Dragon-type threat in the air.

Mega Charizard X

Without its Flying-type, Mega Charizard X takes less damage from Electric-type attacks. While its stats aren’t quite as high as the most recent Mega Evolutions of Legendary Pokémon, it remains a powerful threat in competitive battles. Very few Pokémon can withstand a direct attack from a Mega Charizard.

You can obtain a Charmander relatively early in the game by finishing Side Mission 22. Otherwise, you’ll need to wait until after completing the main story to find it in Wild Zone 20.

Salamence

A Fast Physical Attacker With Coverage

  • Best EV Spread: 252 Atk / 252 Speed/ 4 Def
  • Best Nature: Adamant (Attack ↑ – Sp. Attack ↓)
  • Rec Moveset: Flamethrower (or Dragon Rush), Air Slash, Dragon Claw, Outrage
  • Mega Stone Location: (Salamencite) Purchased at Quasartico Inc. for 360 Mega Shards.
  • BST: 95/135/80/110/80/100
  • BST (Mega): 95/145/130/120/90/120

Salamence and its Mega Evolution are among the most powerful Dragon-type Pokémon, thanks to their good Speed and coverage options, as well as incredibly high Attack stats. They perform best when built as strong, physical attackers.

Mega Salamence

The current competitive scene heavily favors close-range attacks, pushing players towards moves like Melee. While Flamethrower can be a useful alternative to Dragon Rush for closing the distance and preparing for Ice-type attackers such as Mega Froslass, Mega Salamence is generally fast enough to consistently outspeed opponents. This means players can usually rely on repeatedly using the powerful Dragon Rush, or a combination of Outrage and Dragon Claw.

In the game, you can catch Bagon and evolve it into Shelgon and finally Salamence. Alternatively, you can find and capture a powerful Alpha Salamence directly.

Dragonite

A Power Up For One Of The Most Broken Pokemon

  • Best EV Spread: 252 HP/ 252 Atk/ 4 HP
  • Best Nature: Adamant (Attack ↑ – Sp. Attack ↓)
  • Rec Moveset: Thunder Punch, Extremespeed, Dragon Claw (or Fire Punch), Outrage
  • Mega Stone Location: (Dragoninite) Defeat Rogue Mega Dragonite.
  • BST: 91/134/95/100/100/80
  • BST (Mega): 91/124/115/145/125/100

Dragonite was already very strong, and needed to be weakened, not made stronger. The game developers understood this, and when Dragonite Mega Evolves, its stats were adjusted in a way that lowered its Attack power while increasing its Special Attack. It also gets boosts to Defense, Special Defense, and Speed, so the changes aren’t entirely negative.

Mega Dragonite

I still think a straightforward physical Dragonite can be really effective! You can give it moves like Fire Punch or Thunder Punch to hit different types, and definitely use Extremespeed – it’s become super important for getting in quickly. Then just sweep with Outrage! If you want to try something a little different and go for a special attack build, switch its nature to Modest and use Hyper Beam, Draco Meteor, Ice Beam, and Focus Blast – that last one is great for taking down Drampa. It’s a fun change of pace!

You can find a Dratini relatively early in the game on the rooftop of Restaurant Le Nah. It’s located in Lumiose City, on the southeastern side, close to Vert Sector 6.

Drampa

Surprisingly Good For Its Low Stats

  • Best EV Spread: 252 HP/ 252 Sp.Atk/ 4 Def
  • Best Nature: Modest (Sp. Attack ↑ – Attack ↓)
  • Rec Moveset: Draco Meteor, Hyper Beam,
  • Mega Stone Location: (Drampanite) Purchased for 360 Mega Shards at Quasartico Inc.
  • BST: 78/60/85/135/91/36
  • BST (Mega): 78/85/110/160/116/36

Drampa isn’t a Pseudo-Legendary Pokémon, and even its Mega Evolution isn’t strong enough to qualify. However, that doesn’t mean it’s weak! Once it Mega Evolves, Drampa gains incredible Special Attack power, making it a powerful but fragile attacker – a classic ‘glass cannon’.

Drampa is slow, making it difficult to avoid attacks up close. Because of this, it’s usually chosen later in the team selection process. It’s best to keep Drampa at a distance from the main battle and use powerful moves like Draco Meteor or Hyper Beam from afar, rather than getting involved in close combat.

Drampa becomes available to catch after finishing the main story mission, “The Way Home.” Catching an Alpha Drampa requires repeatedly defeating and respawning it, so players may need to try several times to find one with the desired qualities.
