Dragon Quest 2: Luminaries of the Legendary Line significantly improved upon the original Dragon Quest, especially as it was the first game in the series to offer a true sequel experience. Unlike the first game, which you played alone, Dragon Quest 2 let you build a party. This added a new challenge – players now had to carefully manage their Gold to buy equipment for every member of their team.
I’m really enjoying Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake! It feels a little more forgiving than the original when it comes to finding good armor, which is great. Dragon Quest 2 Remake has a bunch of little improvements that make things easier, but if you’re still having trouble gearing up, let me share some armor pieces I think you should grab for your party early on. Seriously, this is one of the best Dragon Quest games out there, RPG fans will love it! I managed to find all this stuff pretty early, within the first six hours or so, before I even got the ship.
Scholar’s Cap
- Location: Moonbrooke Castle
You can find the Scholar’s Cap inside a cabinet in the ruins of Moonbrooke Castle. While you’re there, be sure to grab the Holy Lance as well – it’s a powerful weapon you won’t want to skip!
The Scholar’s Cap is a rare and useful helmet found early in the game. It increases both your Defence and Wisdom, which is unusual for armor at this stage. It’s especially good for Peronel, the party’s strongest mage. Caradoc is the second-best magic user, as the main hero can’t learn much magic at the beginning of Dragon Quest 2 Remake.
Fizzle-Retardant Blouse
- Location: Moonbrooke Castle (B1)
The Fizzle-Retardant Blouse is an early-game armor piece found in the basement of Moonbrooke Castle. You’ll find it hidden inside some barrels in a corner – a strange place to keep such important equipment, especially since Peronel needs it.
Fizzle is a spell that can be used by both players and enemies, temporarily disabling magical abilities – similar to the Silence spell in the Final Fantasy games. Wearing the Fizzle-Retardant Blouse will protect Peronel from having her magic sealed.
Arriviste’s Vest
- Location: Leftwyne (Inn, Need Thief’s Key)
The Arriviste’s Vest is body armor available to all characters. While it offers good defense, its special bonus is so useful that players will likely want to keep it equipped throughout the entire game, even in the late stages of Dragon Quest 2 Remake.
After battles, players will earn more Gold, which is a valuable resource in the game. You can find the Arriviste’s Vest at the inn in Leftwyne, but you’ll need the Thief’s Key to unlock the chest where it’s hidden. You’ll receive the Thief’s Key as soon as you add Peronel to your team, giving you access to new areas and possibilities.
Cloak Of Evasion
- Location: Cannock (Shop)
You can easily find the Cloak of Evasion in the town of Cannock. Once Peronel joins your group, the shops in both Midenhall and Cannock will start selling new items. The Cloak of Evasion boosts your defense, but its main benefit is helping you avoid enemy attacks.
Like most role-playing games, hitting your attacks in Dragon Quest 2 Remake is crucial for both your team and your enemies. Luckily, abilities that boost evasion can help you dodge even the most precise attacks.
White Shield
- Location: Oasis (Shop)
You can buy the White Shield in the town of Oasis, a desert haven in Dragon Quest 2 Remake. Only the Hero and Caradoc can use it. It offers strong defense and also helps protect against fire attacks, which are common with many enemies like mages and dragons. It’s a good idea to purchase two to maximize your protection.
A major battle is coming to Rippleport, and the White Shields will definitely be a valuable asset. Players looking to save money can try their luck with the Tombola Draw lottery in Oasis. The grand prize is a Loyalty Card, which permanently lowers prices in shops. Tombola Tickets needed to play can be found as rare drops from enemies in the Oasis desert – it may take some time and luck to get them.
Robe Of Serenity
- Location: Northern Dragon’s Horns
You can find the Robe of Serenity inside the Northern Dragon’s Horns, a very large tower. Only Peronel can wear this armor, and it’s a significant improvement over her current Fizzle-Retardant Blouse. Plus, the robe will restore some of Peronel’s health each turn.
Because she starts with the lowest Defence in Dragon Quest 2 Remake, getting better gear for her is crucial. If she falls in battle, you’ll lose access to some strong attacks and defensive magic, and it’s always difficult to bring characters back to life in a Dragon Quest game.
