While Dragon Quest 2: Luminaries of the Legendary Line remains a classic NES RPG, it definitely shows its age. Luckily, fans of RPGs and the Dragon Quest series can now experience it in a modern way with Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, which features beautiful graphics and several helpful improvements.
In the remake of Dragon Quest 2, you’ll build a team of characters, and each one can use many different weapons. Buying weapons from shops is a good way to improve your stats, but some even better weapons are available early in the game. Here’s a look at the best ones to find quickly – you can get them all within the first few hours of playing, so don’t miss out!
Divine Dagger
- Location: Secret Spot (Near Midenhall)
Okay, so I found this awesome weapon early on called the Divine Dagger. Once you get past Midenhall, people start talking about Secret Spots. You can actually turn on a hint for them in the options menu – it shows these spots as little ripples on the world map, which is super helpful if you’re trying to find them all!
Players who prefer a less guided experience can disable these hints, but the Secret Spot is always located north of Midenhall. The Divine Dagger isn’t incredibly strong, but it deals extra damage to undead creatures – common enemies in RPGs like Dragon Quest 2 Remake, including ghosts and zombies.
Wizard’s Staff
- Location: Wellspring of the Hero
Unlike many RPGs where powerful items are found in chests, the Wizard’s Staff isn’t located in the Wellspring in that way. Instead, players can obtain it as a rare drop from an enemy called a Magus. Interestingly, Dragon Quest is unusual for allowing players to use weapons during battle as if they were items, and the Wizard’s Staff lets you cast a fireball.
This item is especially helpful for the Hero in Dragon Quest 2 Remake since he doesn’t begin the game knowing any magic. Plus, you can sell the Wizard’s Staff for 250 Gold, so it might be worth spending some time battling in this area with Matilda, who joins your party temporarily, to earn some money.
Boomerang
- Location: Cave of the Lake
Fans of Dragon Quest already know it’s a challenging RPG series that often requires a lot of repetitive battles. Luckily, certain weapons, like the Boomerang, can help make those battles go by faster. You can find the Boomerang in the Cave of the Lake dungeon, and it’s special because it can hit all enemies at once.
Honestly, this weapon doesn’t hit super hard, but it’s fine for now, especially since Caradoc is always with me. Plus, there are other boomerangs to find in Dragon Quest 2 Remake, like the Edged Boomerang. Getting that one is a bit weird, though – you have to win a lottery in Moonahan, which is basically a Tombola Draw. Luckily, if you’re willing to reload your save a few times (we all do it!), it’s pretty easy to win.
Thorn Whip
- Location: Item Cache (Near Cave of the Lake)
Throughout the game world, you’ll often find shimmering blue areas – similar to Secret Spots – that are easy to stumble upon. One of these is located east of the Cave of the Lake, and it’s where players can find their first whip. Using a whip in this game feels just as good as it does in other games known for them, like Castlevania.
The Thorn Whip is a straightforward weapon without any extra effects, but it can hit multiple enemies at once, similar to how Slimes attack. It works like a Boomerang, though it doesn’t travel as far, but it makes up for it with more power. There are many other whips in Dragon Quest 2 Remake, such as the Chain Whip, which you can find in the Deserted Village relatively early in the game.
Holy Lance
- Location: Moonbrooke Castle
You can find the Holy Lance inside a cabinet within the ruins of Moonbrooke Castle. Similar to the Divine Dagger, it’s very effective against undead enemies, but it’s even more powerful and will be especially helpful in upcoming boss battles.
It’s always smart to hold onto weaker weapons – you never know when you might need them to exploit an enemy’s weakness, and this is especially true in Dragon Quest 2 Remake, like most RPGs. Also, be sure to check the cabinet next to the Holy Lance; you’ll find the Scholar’s Cap, a great piece of armor that boosts your Wisdom stat.
Snooze Stick
- Location: Moonbrooke Castle (B1)
You can also find the Snooze Stick in the basement of Moonbrooke Castle. To open the red chest, you’ll need the Thief’s Key, which you’ll get by continuing with the story soon after this point. If you kept track of where the red chests and doors are, you’ll be able to find some other useful items early on in Dragon Quest 2 Remake once you have the key.
Despite its name, the Snooze Stick isn’t a particularly powerful item and won’t make your spellcasters stronger. However, like a wizard’s staff, it is useful – it can put enemies to sleep. This creates a chance for your team to heal up or prepare for their next move, making the Snooze Stick worthwhile in the right situation.
