The Resident Evil series is notable for frequently featuring strong female characters. From the beginning, players could control Jill Valentine and Rebecca Chambers, and the series has consistently included a good mix of male and female heroes. Capcom isn’t afraid to create memorable female villains either, like the incredibly popular Lady Dimitrescu.
The Resident Evil series isn’t famous for its intricate storytelling, but it has created a remarkable number of unforgettable female characters. These women have become icons, not just in the horror genre, but in gaming as a whole. Let’s look back at some of the best female characters the series has to offer.
31. Carla Radames (Resident Evil 6)
Instrumental In The Creation And Weaponization Of The C-Virus
Okay, so Resident Evil 6 is…complicated. A lot of fans didn’t love it because it went way heavier on the action and co-op stuff than the spooky, survival horror that made the earlier games so great. But honestly, it wasn’t a total loss. RE6 actually gave us some really cool female characters, like Carla Radames, who were genuinely strong and memorable.
Carla isn’t just similar in appearance to Ada Wong; she’s a highly intelligent and successful woman who achieved a great deal. She developed the C-Virus and founded the Neo-Umbrella organization. Following her death by Ada’s hand, Neo-Umbrella collapsed, demonstrating how crucial she was to the company’s existence.
30. Alex Wesker (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)
Alex May Never Have Truly Died
The second episodic Resident Evil game featured returning characters like Claire Redfield and Barry Burton, alongside new faces such as Moira Burton, Natalia Korda, and Alex Wesker. Before Revelations 2, Alex Wesker had only been briefly referenced in a document within the Lost Nightmares downloadable content for Resident Evil 5.
Honestly, Alex is such a fascinating character! We don’t know much about where she came from, but she really made a name for herself after being part of the Wesker Project. The fact that Umbrella recruited her shows just how brilliant she was. She wasn’t content with being just human, she wanted to become something more powerful. Even though she was beaten in the end, the game Revelations 2 strongly suggests she didn’t truly die, and lives on inside Natalia. It’s a really cool idea!
29. Excella Gione (Resident Evil 5)
Strong Enough to be a Match for Chris and Sheva
If Albert shows interest in someone, it’s a sign that person is important. She started as a low-level employee at Tricell, but her alliance with Wesker helped her rise through the ranks. She eventually gained power over the entire company, and even controlled the mind of Jill Valentine.
Wesker predictably betrayed Excella, causing her to transform into a horrifying creature of flesh and tentacles. Her incredible strength and speed nearly ended Chris and Sheva’s mission right then and there.
28. Rachel Foley (Resident Evil: Revelations)
The Reluctant Agent Became A Monster
Jill will encounter Rachel Foley, a former FBC agent, who has unfortunately been infected by the t-Abyss virus. Rachel’s initial assignment was to investigate the events that occurred on the ship and prepare it for destruction, all to protect her superior from being linked to the incident.
Like most games in the Resident Evil series, things don’t go as expected, and a trained operative transforms into a terrifying enemy that Jill must fight. Rachel’s time in Resident Evil: Revelations was brief, but she made a lasting impression.
27. Ingrid Hunnigan (Resident Evil 4)
Provides Invaluable Support To Leon
Rescuing the President’s daughter from a remote Spanish village was a huge challenge for Leon, and he likely couldn’t have done it without help from Ingrid Hunnigan. Although she only checks in with him occasionally to monitor his progress and provide guidance, she remains an important character throughout the game.
While it’s doubtful Ada Wong will reappear in future games, her impact on Resident Evil 4 will be remembered by fans. She was consistently smart and direct, and she didn’t respond to Leon’s playful flirting, making her a memorable character.
Ingrid Hunnigan’s Best Video Game Appearance
Ingrid appears in multiple Resident Evil games, but she’s best known for her role in Resident Evil 4. The question is whether she’s better utilized in the original 2005 game or the 2023 remake. The answer is clear: the remake. While she’s eventually removed from the story in the original, she remains a consistent character throughout the remake. Plus, the remake gives her much more personality through her conversations with Leon.
26. Annette Birkin (Resident Evil 2)
Where She Fails As A Mother, She Shines As A Scientist
When people think of villains in Resident Evil 2, they usually remember Dr. Birkin or Mr. X. However, Annette Birkin deserves just as much recognition, but is often overlooked. She’s a brilliant scientist, and the wife of William Birkin and mother of Sherry.
Her primary focus is understanding how the virus affected her husband, even more than her own well-being or her child’s. However, she’s not simply driven by research; she clearly feels conflicted about leaving Sherry when the girl needs help. It’s these complexities that make her a compelling character, and remind us that, despite being a villain, she’s still a human being with relatable emotions.
Annette Birkin’s Best Video Game Appearance
Like Ingrid, Annette Birkin truly shines in Resident Evil 2 and its remake. And, similar to Ingrid, she’s a much more compelling character in the newer version, which gives her clearer reasons for her actions. In the original game, she simply tries to protect the G-Virus, but the remake shows her as a woman frantically trying to control the outbreak caused by her husband. This makes her journey as a complex, sympathetic character much more impactful.
25. Alexia Ashford (Resident Evil Code: Veronica)
Gifted With Supreme Intelligence And Lofty Ambitions
The trope of the ‘mad scientist’ is common in the Resident Evil series, appearing as the villain in most games. Alexia Ashford is a particularly memorable example, known for her cold, strategic personality and ambition to rule the world.
Alexia was created as a genetic copy of Dr. Alexander’s ancestor, Veronica, and possessed exceptional intelligence. She graduated from a top university at just ten years old and began working as a virologist for Umbrella Corporation, quickly proving herself as an equal to her older colleagues. She later focused on dangerous viruses, which led to the creation of the monstrous Nosferatu. Ultimately, she infected herself with these viruses, transforming into a being of even greater power.
Alexia Ashford’s Best Video Game Appearance
Although Alexia first appeared in Code: Veronica, The Darkside Chronicles really showcases her character. The improved graphics in the 2009 game allow her almost god-like qualities, especially her transformations into the Ant Queen, to be much more impressive.
24. Moira Burton (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)
Grows And Matures Throughout The Game
Moira first appeared in the game Revelations 2, where she assists Claire Redfield. She’s also Barry Burton’s oldest daughter. A childhood accident involving a gun and her sister, Polly, caused a strained relationship with her father, leading Moira to rebel. Encouraged by Claire, she joined the TerraSave organization and happened to be at the event that kicked off the game’s main story.
Moira starts out seeming like a typical, grumpy teenager, but she develops into a much more mature and likable character throughout the game. The story culminates in a heartwarming reconciliation with her father, making her a truly memorable character.
Moira Burton’s Best Video Game Appearance
Aside from a few brief appearances as a child, Moira is only playable in Revelations 2. She really shines in the bonus episode, “The Struggle,” which tells the story of her six months surviving on her own after getting lost from Claire.
23. Jessica Sherawat (Resident Evil: Revelations)
Behind Her Playful Demeanor Is A Calculating Triple Agent
Jessica is introduced as Chris’s new partner, seemingly affiliated with the BSAA, and they’re assigned to investigate Veltro. She often acts very relaxed during missions, playfully teasing Chris about his past with Jill. However, this laid-back demeanor might be a carefully constructed facade, hiding her true nature.
Jessica is a triple agent secretly working for Tricell. She pretends to be with the BSAA, and her actions include shooting Jill’s partner, Parker, and setting off the Queen Zenobia’s self-destruct sequence to eliminate the labs and cover up evidence linking Morgan Lansdale to wrongdoing.
22. Donna Beneviento (Resident Evil Village)
A Soft-Spoken Character With An Air Of Mystery
In Village, Ethan meets many new people, including the mysterious Four Lords. While Angie does most of the communicating, she’s almost always with Donna Beneviento, who created the unsettling doll.
Haunted by childhood trauma and intense anxiety, Donna expresses herself primarily through her dolls, finding solace in crafting them as a way to cope with the loss of her family. After becoming infected with a strange parasite, she developed a skill for creating chemicals that induce powerful, often disturbing, hallucinations. Despite her quiet demeanor, dismissing Donna as harmless would be a dangerous error.
