As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can confidently say that I’ve seen my fair share of action games that allow me to indulge in my primal urge to wreak havoc on hordes of virtual adversaries. However, there are a few standout titles that have truly mastered the art of mass carnage, and today, I’d like to shine a spotlight on seven such games.
One compelling aspect of action games is their mechanism for allowing players to strategically position targets before delivering a destructive blow. This can be seen as a therapeutic impulse that modern life has largely suppressed or reduced in many individuals. Nevertheless, the primal instinct within every civilized person to enjoy causing havoc persists, finding expression in the satisfaction of defeating virtual enemies. Consequently, it is understandable that certain games focus heavily on this dynamic, often to an extreme degree.
For centuries, portraying the act of plunging a sword into an adversary in games has been commonplace. However, some innovative developers have recognized the potential in reversing the power dynamic that such violent encounters often imply. Instead of pitting players against hordes of aggressive enemies, these games empower them by arming them with weapons like guns, grenades, or glaives. The result is a deluge of intense action and violence in gameplay.
Dead Rising
72 Hours Of Mall Mauling
Malls elicit strong feelings of affection or disdain among people. For some, they symbolize vibrant centers of shopping; for others, they represent a draining vortex for capitalist consumers. In the game Dead Rising, the mall is undeniably in the latter group, as it’s overrun with the living dead, who are crawling throughout every corner and level.
In an unprecedented manner, the renowned reporter, Frank West, from the game Dead Rising, exploits the mall like never before. Every store transforms into a stockpile of weapons for fending off, slicing through, or destroying endless hordes of the undead. With an abundance of consumer goods (approximately 250) at his disposal, Frank’s strategies prove to be exceptionally inventive.
DOOM Eternal
Flushing Out Hell With Gallons Of Freshly-Squeezed Demon Blood
In DOOM Eternal, “Tearing apart and destroying in Hell” isn’t just a game mechanic; it embodies the Slayer’s lifestyle. He applies this aggressive approach to all aspects, including combat, interacting with computer terminals, and even dealing with allies. Fueled by an intense metal soundtrack, each interaction is meticulously crafted to provoke that raw, instinctual state in players.
In a thrilling blend of challenge and empowerment, DOOM Eternal skillfully balances pushing players to their limits while making them feel unstoppable enough to keep fighting the fury. Healing even the lost health necessitates a fierce outburst, as it involves ripping health points from the throats of demonic adversaries. For those whose primary interest lies in slicing through demon guts, its horde mode should quench that thirst for violence.
Warhammer 40,000: Darktide
Cleansing Hordes Of Heretics, One Dreg At A Time
In the universe of Warhammer 40,000, it’s known for portraying relentless, extreme warfare akin to an apocalypse. Darktide delivers the kind of justice to these images of catastrophic violence that any honorable space marine would bring upon those who disregard the God-Emperor of Mankind.
In simpler terms, the game “Darktide” is most enjoyable when played with a group of friends, as you assume roles of former convicts, either humans or mutants, navigating through a city infested with heretics and monstrosities corrupted by chaos. Since your characters are typically average humans in terms of strength and size, the enemy waves in “Darktide” will consistently challenge those who lack proper preparation.
Grim Dawn
Bursting Through A Billion Bloodbags Of The Damned
Three things are guaranteed in Grim Dawn: damnation, more bad guys than good guys, and an overflowing inventory of loot (at least without loot filters). Eldrich-possessed zombies, demonic hounds and insects, and abominations beyond the void are thrown at the player wave after wave through labyrinthian wildernesses, complex tunnel systems, and improbably long basement complexes.
In a game set in the unruly frontier during the Victorian era, players face relentless waves of undead foes. They have the flexibility to tackle these challenges with nine distinct masteries, which function as character classes. Players aren’t confined to choosing between wielding storm magic or greatswords; they can effectively employ both methods in their fight against enemies.
Dynasty Warriors 8
Culling Armies Like Bleeding Fields Of Grass
When people envision intense battles against vast numbers of adversaries, the Dynasty Warriors series is often what comes to mind first. Although it wasn’t the initial game featuring a lone warrior managing an entire enemy force, it certainly popularized this style of play. In line with the series’ tradition, Dynasty Warriors 8 places players in the role of Chinese feudal lords, guiding them through historical conflicts.
In essence, while the narrative generally mirrors historical events, the heroic figures triumph remarkably on their own during the day’s climax. Post-completion of the primary storyline, you can engage in hypothetical missions that delve into alternative histories. Notably, the game Dynasty Warriors served as a blueprint for another series featuring fighter versus army combat, namely Hyrule Warriors, which is set within the universe of The Legend of Zelda.
Vampire Survivors
Fending Off Every Single Creature Of The Night
Initially, you might think that Vampire Survivor, with its retro-style pixel art, doesn’t seem like a rich wellspring of action packed with enemy elimination. However, its clever reward system, engaging visual feedback, and ingenious use of our natural fondness for numerical advancement and efficiency make it so captivating that players can lose track of time, mesmerized by their character gradually whittling down the endless waves of darkness.
In essence, there are just two actions to control in the game Vampire Survivor: move and choose rewards. The character onscreen handles all the monster-slaying action automatically, while the player decides which power-ups to utilize and determines the direction in which they will mow down hordes of the undead. Unaware, players can easily spend countless hours watching wave after wave of enemies being destroyed by dazzling passive attacks.
