Best Games That Give Players God-Like Powers

Video games are great at letting players experience things impossible in the real world. Most big-budget games focus on realism, but some offer something completely different. Many action games give players incredible, almost god-like powers, and sometimes even let you play as a god. Though, even with those powers, you can still die and lose the game – so you’re not quite invincible!

People generally enjoy playing games where you’re incredibly powerful and can do amazing things – feeling nearly invincible is always fun! We’re highlighting some of the best games that offer this experience, focusing on those where the main character has truly god-like abilities.

God of War

Become the God of Strength and Rage

In God of War, players control Kratos, a former human who spent ten years serving the gods. After killing Ares, Kratos became the new God of War and ascended to Olympus. As a god, Kratos possesses incredible strength and can quickly heal from injuries. He also has a special ability called Spartan Rage, which lets him defeat large groups of enemies using only his hands.

So, in God of War (2018), I’m playing as Kratos, and even though he’s trying to lay low, he’s still basically a god – super strong and immortal when he needs to be. He’s been keeping his past a secret from his son, Atreus, but that all comes out. And let me tell you, the Norse gods don’t like it one bit! Throughout God of War and Ragnarök, I had to fight some seriously tough bosses – Baldur, Thor, Heimdall, even Odin himself! It really showed that even an older Kratos is a total powerhouse.

Prototype 2

Swiss Army Mutant

The Prototype series remains a classic in the open-world action genre. Few games since have offered such incredible superpowers and thrilling ways to get around. Prototype 2 takes the chaos to a new level, letting players speed through the city faster than ever – even Spider-Man would be impressed! The unique mutations also make the main character, James Heller, feel truly invincible.

Building on the first game, Prototype 2 improves the already impressive abilities like Blade, Claws, Tendrils, Hammerfists, and Whipfists. New passive mutations even allow you to make Heller more powerful than Alex Mercer. Both Prototype games are incredibly enjoyable as an over-the-top action experience, and it’s disappointing that few open-world superhero games have reached their level since 2012.

Black Myth: Wukong

Damn, This Monkey Got Hands

I’ve been absolutely blown away by Black Myth: Wukong – it’s easily one of the best action games I’ve played in ages! It’s a fantastic mix of classic action gameplay and those challenging ‘soulslike’ elements. Honestly, it feels like you’re constantly facing off against incredible bosses – there are over 100 of them as you travel West! I was a little worried that only using a staff might get repetitive, but it’s actually anything but. The combat is surprisingly varied and keeps things fresh.

In Black Myth: Wukong, players gain access to a huge variety of powerful abilities, including magic, transformations, spirit powers, and special artifacts that fit any playstyle. The game constantly introduces new ways to fight and play, ensuring players always have exciting, god-like powers to try out. From creating multiple copies of yourself with the devastating ‘A Pluck of Many’ to freezing time with ‘Immobilize’, and even briefly transforming into any creature you can imagine, Black Myth: Wukong offers a level of power diversity that many action games can only dream of.

Infamous Second Son

Perhaps the Most Original Selection of Superpowers Ever

The Infamous series is just as impressive as the Prototype games, and it truly shines with its open-world gameplay, especially in Infamous Second Son. Each game features unique powers, but Second Son takes it to another level. You play as Delsin Rowe, who can steal superpowers from others – known as Conduits – and master abilities like Smoke, Neon, Video, and Concrete. These powers are much more creative than the typical fire or electricity powers found in other games.

Similar to the Prototype games, Delsin’s powers aren’t limited to fighting; they also help you get around. You can quickly fly and glide, use vents to scale buildings instantly, and use neon to sprint endlessly. The combat in Infamous Second Son is also excellent, offering incredible power and stunning graphics that still look great today.

From Dust

Manipulate the Landscape and Defy Nature Itself

From Dust, a uniquely creative game by Ubisoft, puts you in the role of a god, guiding a tribe through a constantly changing and dangerous world. To help them survive, you’ll directly control the environment itself – manipulating earth, water, and other elements in real time to tame the wild landscape.

From Dust offers a unique and satisfying gameplay experience where you essentially shape the world around you. You play as a powerful shaman, using rituals to control the environment – stopping lava flows, creating lakes and forests, and even raising mountains. However, nature isn’t easily tamed! It constantly fights back with disasters like tsunamis, wildfires, and earthquakes, testing your ability to withstand its force. Can you prove yourself as a true architect of this world?

Middle-earth: Shadow of War

Ghost-Like Powers Are Cool, but How About Bending Someone’s Will?

While famous for their innovative Nemesis system, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War offer much more than just that feature. Although the games don’t fully capture the richness and wonder of J.R.R. Tolkien’s world—instead emphasizing its darker elements—they are thrilling, open-world action adventures. Players take control of incredibly powerful characters, Talion and Celebrimbor, who combine supernatural abilities with fast-paced combat and movement.

The Bright Lord’s incredible power is most evident in his ability to control the minds of orcs, forcing them to serve him. In Middle-earth: Shadow of War, this feature, combined with the Nemesis system, creates a unique feeling of being a truly powerful ruler. Players can build an army, command fearsome creatures like Trolls and Drakes, and lay siege to enemy fortresses, causing widespread destruction.

Marvel’s Avengers

Full Roster of Heroes to Choose From, Literal Gods Included

Let’s be upfront: while Marvel’s Avengers doesn’t have the best reputation, it’s a unique action game. It allows you to play as a variety of superheroes, each with their own fighting style, movement abilities, and incredible powers. You can even play as both Thor Odinson and Mighty Thor (Jane Foster), or the incredibly powerful Hulk, causing massive destruction. However, don’t get careless – even though you’re playing as gods, they aren’t invincible, and you can still be defeated if you’re not careful.

In Marvel’s Avengers, players have a lot of freedom to customize each character – like Thor or Hulk – by choosing and upgrading different abilities. Thor can fly using his hammer, Mjölnir, and Hulk can cover huge areas with his powerful jumps, making both characters feel incredibly strong. The only catch is that the game is no longer available for purchase, as it was removed from digital stores in late 2023, but anyone who already owns it can still play.
