If you’re feeling a bit sad or down, one of the best ways to boost your mood is by playing a fun and inspirational video game. While many games aim to scare or unsettle players to create an immersive experience, there are still lots of fantastic games designed to evoke positive feelings and inspire you to enjoy life even more after you finish playing.
In many cases, the inspiration for these games comes from the main character, who bravely undertakes a difficult quest to reach a long-held ambition. Sometimes, though, it’s the charming characters and captivating stories that truly ignite a player’s passion. Regardless, the games listed below are prime examples of titles that are incredibly inspirational and will leave anyone feeling motivated and excited as soon as they begin playing.
Metal Gear Solid 2
Live Your Own Life, Create Your Own Legacy
The follow-up to the hugely successful Metal Gear Solid might begin as a straightforward stealth game with some funny characters and lighthearted scenes, but it soon becomes apparent that the game has much deeper themes. Although Hideo Kojima wove many important ideas into the game, many players describe it using the term ‘Meme,’ which represents ideas or behaviors passed down through generations, outside the control of those in power.
During the game’s final scenes, Snake delivers a powerful speech emphasizing the importance of each person creating their own path and leaving a lasting impact. While the story certainly explores difficult and weighty themes, the developers clearly aimed to offer players a message of hope – that a meaningful and fulfilling life is still possible, even in today’s increasingly controlled world. Snake’s thoughtful reflections on freedom, breaking free, and the value of life itself are incredibly motivating and inspiring, making this one of the most memorable and celebrated monologues in video game history.
Sonic Frontiers
The Blue Blur Goes Above And Beyond To Save His Friends
The Sonic series is famous for its fast-paced, exciting gameplay, and usually doesn’t focus much on story. However, that’s different with Sonic Frontiers. This game, which has large, open areas to explore, tells a more complex and grown-up story than fans typically expect. Sonic’s friends get trapped in a digital world called Cyber-Space, and he’s determined to save them all, one by one.
This results in many touching talks between Sonic and his friends, emphasizing what initially bonded them and why they’ve remained a team, despite Sonic not always being the most supportive friend. Watching this iconic character pour his heart and soul into rescuing those he cares about makes him a truly inspiring figure that people of all ages can appreciate and learn from.
Final Fantasy 7
Cloud Starts Off As An Emotional Mess, But With The Help Of Others, He Becomes A Better Person
At first, Cloud Strife seems like a calm and collected mercenary in Final Fantasy 7, but he’s actually concealing a lot about his past and true self, which players gradually discover throughout the story. Cloud is deeply in denial about his identity and history, and essentially lives as if he *is* a fabricated persona. This explains why he often acts like a ruthless hero, keeping everyone at a distance for much of the game.
It would have been simple for the creators of Final Fantasy VII to keep Cloud distant and unemotional throughout the game, but he actually changes significantly after making friends with several allies. The game shows that Cloud can only fully come to terms with his past and accept himself by relying on the support of those around him. By the end of his adventure, he transforms into a brave hero who has gone through a difficult process of self-discovery and acceptance.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
There’s Nothing Quite Like Taking Down A Brutal Boss To Lift The Spirits
Soulsborne games, such as Sekiro, are well-known for being incredibly challenging, but this difficulty is actually what makes them so inspiring. Few things in gaming create the feeling of being able to conquer anything quite like defeating a difficult boss. This is particularly true in Sekiro. The game demands a lot of skill from players, and becoming proficient at parrying is absolutely essential to avoid taking significant damage from opponents.
From epic warriors on horseback to colossal snakes hidden in caves, or even furious bulls determined to destroy the hero, games are filled with incredibly powerful boss enemies for players to battle. It’s incredibly rewarding to defeat these challenging foes, particularly for players who persevere through multiple failed attempts – and a few Game Over screens – before finally achieving victory. Needless to say, overcoming such obstacles provides a great sense of accomplishment.
Minecraft
Spark Some Creativity By Building Anything And Everything With A Few Blocks
I think almost everyone hits a point where they just feel uninspired, but if you want something to really get your imagination going again, it has to be Minecraft. At first glance, Minecraft might seem really basic – just hitting trees and building with blocks. But once you start to realize *how many* different resources, items, and minerals are in the game – especially with all the updates they’ve added – you realize you can basically build anything you can dream up. The possibilities are truly endless!
Players can build anything they imagine in Minecraft, from a simple wooden hut for nighttime protection to a sprawling kingdom filled with Villagers and helpers. All it takes is time and effort. It’s amazing that a game can be so inspiring without a traditional story or developed characters, and it really demonstrates just how powerful Minecraft is as a game, explaining its lasting popularity over the years.
Spider-Man 2
Spidey Never Gives Up, And Neither Does Miles
In the follow-up to Insomniac’s first game, Peter Parker returns as Spider-Man, and he’s now teamed up with Miles Morales. Players can instantly switch between controlling either hero during gameplay. A major character from the comics, Venom, also appears in this sequel, and the story largely revolves around the conflict between Peter and this powerful alien symbiote. This creates some dramatic clashes between Peter and Miles, but it’s clear they still care for each other deeply, like brothers, and are always ready to support each other when things get tough.
More than just a game, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is uplifting because it lets you be a hero. Players are free to help people and fight crime throughout New York City, making it a better place. While we can’t all swing from buildings or shoot webs, the game shows us that anyone can be a hero – simply by doing small acts of kindness.
God Of War (2018)
Kratos Learns How To Appreciate His Son During Their Epic Adventure
Family relationships can be difficult, and God of War 2018 explores this through Kratos’ journey with his son, Atreus. At the start of the game, Kratos is a far-from-ideal father – he largely ignores Atreus. However, their bond evolves as the story unfolds. Over time, Kratos comes to recognize Atreus not just as someone he must safeguard, but also as someone he needs to guide and mentor.
Though it takes time, the father and son ultimately form a strong connection with each other, having narrowly escaped death multiple times at the hands of the Norse gods. God of War delivers a deeply moving narrative that might encourage players to value and respect their family and close friends more, strengthening those relationships, much like the bond between Kratos and Atreus.
