Blade Chimera
Symphony Of Tokyo
- Developer: Team Ladybug
- Publishers: Playism, WSS Playground
- Released: January 16, 2025
- Platforms: PC, Switch
Blade Chimera is a 2D action-adventure game, inspired by Metroidvania classics, set in a demon-infested apocalyptic Japan. You play as Shin, a demon hunter, and fight alongside Lux, a ghostly spirit that manifests as a sword. Throughout the game, you’ll battle enemies using a variety of weapons – from guns to swords – equip gear to improve your stats, use helpful items, and gain experience to become more powerful.
As Lux gains more abilities, she’ll become increasingly powerful. Initially, she can do things like cling to walls to help Shin climb, transform into a grappling hook, or even restore broken objects – imagine bringing a forklift back to life! Players who enjoyed Castlevania: Symphony of the Night will appreciate the game’s equipment and character progression systems.
Hotel Barcelona
Looking For Killers
Hotel Barcelona is a new game by Hidetaka Suehiro, known as SWERY – the creative mind behind the popular cult classic, Deadly Premonition. Like his previous work, this game has a distinctly strange atmosphere, though the main story unfolds in short bursts. Players take on the role of Justine, a U.S. Marshal who, along with the serial killer living inside her, is tasked with tracking down other criminals in the area, all within the confines of the Hotel Barcelona.
In Hotel Barcelona, when you die, your character, Justine, simply starts over, thanks to a curse on the grounds. It’s a 2D roguelike game where you can permanently improve your character with things like stronger stats and better weapons. While it’s different from Hades 2, fans of Deadly Premonition will likely enjoy its unique atmosphere.
To A T
Bizarre School Days
Developed by Keita Takahashi, the creator of Katamari Damacy, to a T is a unique and heartwarming game. Players control a teenager with disabilities who must navigate everyday tasks – from getting ready in the morning to going to school – all while remaining in a T-pose. Each day feels like a new episode, presenting a different challenge. While the game starts slowly, its charming characters and catchy theme song quickly draw you in.
Ender Magnolia: Bloom In The Mist
Harnessing The Past
In Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist, a 2D Metroidvania adventure, you play as Lilac, a character who awakens with no memory in a decaying, futuristic world. As Lilac explores, she discovers the ability to take control of robotic creatures called Homunculi. These Homunculi are key to unlocking new abilities, allowing her to move through the world and fight enemies.
Players can summon various Homunculi, each with unique attacks – some fight with swords, others with guns – and all can be improved. You’ll explore the game world using abilities like gliding and a hookshot. Unlocking more Homunculi allows you to delve further into this atmospheric Metroidvania.
Dreams Of Another
A Surreal Shooter
Dreams of Another is a surreal game set within shifting dreamscapes. Each level features hazy backgrounds that players can literally blast away with guns or grenades to reveal clearer pathways. While enemies appear occasionally, the main focus is on shooting dream fragments to solve maze-like levels and progress.
Similar to dreams, the game’s objectives can feel imaginative and open-ended. While it’s a solid third-person shooter on the PS5, players who want a truly immersive experience can also enjoy Dreams of Another using the PSVR 2 headset.
Ratatan
A Musical Roguelike
Ratatan is a new game inspired by the unique PSP title, Patapon. Players pick a hero with special abilities and embark on 2D roguelike adventures. You’ll command a team of followers, telling them when to move, defend, or attack by following the rhythm of a chant.
Ratatan is a charming game with lovely hand-drawn art and a really memorable soundtrack. While it’s still in development as an Early Access title, it’s already quite promising, and we expect any remaining issues will be fixed by the full release.
CASSETTE BOY
Zelda Meets Fez
- Developer: Wonderland Kazakiri inc.
- Publisher: Pocketpair Publishing
- Released: 1/14/26
- Platforms: PC, PS5, and Switch
CASSETTE BOY feels like a loving tribute to games like The Legend of Zelda and Fez. Players quickly gain weapons – a sword and a bow – and can improve their abilities by defeating enemies. But the real game-changer comes with a special pair of headphones that allow players to rotate the world around them, changing how they experience the game.
Players can change their viewpoint to see things differently, revealing secret characters, items, or pathways that aren’t visible from other angles. CASSETTE BOY is a standout hidden gem of 2026 and deserves wider recognition.
Never Grave: The Witch And The Curse
The Sorting Hat Adventures
I’m really into this game called Never Grave: The Witch and The Curse. It’s a 2D Metroidvania, which means it’s all about exploring a big, interconnected world and getting upgrades. But here’s the thing that makes it different – it also throws in roguelike elements! Basically, every time you play, the levels change, and you have to adapt. You run around this crazy labyrinth, slashing enemies with your sword or using magic, but it’s never the same twice. It’s a really cool mix of genres – people are calling it a ‘Roguevania’, and honestly, that fits perfectly.
The main character’s hat has a special ability: it can take control of enemies, much like Cappy’s hat in Super Mario Odyssey, adding interesting options to battles. Plus, the game features four-player cooperative play and lets you build up a village. Because of these unique features, Never Grave: The Witch and The Curse is a great find for fans of Metroidvania and roguelike games.
SONOKUNI
A DJ-Inspired Roguelike
- Developer: DON YASA CREW
- Publisher: Kakehashi Games
- Released: 3/24/25
- Platforms: PC and Switch
SONOKUNI is a unique and immersive game that blends music and storytelling, featuring Japanese hip-hop and electronica. It’s played from a top-down view, similar to Hotline Miami, where you enter rooms and quickly defeat all enemies. However, you’re just as vulnerable, meaning a single hit can take you down.
Unlike Hotline Miami, SONOKUNI has frequent checkpoints and fast loading times, letting you quickly get back to the gameplay. You can use standard attacks, but also deflect enemy blows and briefly slow down time during key moves. Expect to discover even more unique abilities as you play.
Stray Children
A Crayon-Like EarthBound
- Developer: Onion Games
- Publisher: Onion Games
- Released: 10/30/25
- Platforms: PC and Switch
Stray Children is a truly immersive game, but it requires patience. Its distinctive visuals draw you into a fascinating, unfinished video game world where you play as a dog-like character on a mission to rescue the hero and, ultimately, save the game itself.
During battles, players move around small areas to avoid getting hit, and each turn they can either attack or try to talk to their opponents – it’s a bit like the game Undertale. This game focuses more on interacting with interesting characters than on typical RPG combat, and figuring things out can sometimes be tricky, so you’ll need to be patient.
