As a cinephile with a deep appreciation for investigative thrillers and horror films, I have had the pleasure of experiencing some truly remarkable movies throughout my life. Among these gems, there are three that stand out as absolute must-sees for any fan of the genre: “Zodiac,” “Seven,” and “The Silence of the Lambs.”
I’ve hardly come across any movies that share the same unique blend of investigative horror and nail-biting cat-and-mouse scenes as “Longlegs.” Starring Maika Monroe and an almost unbelievable Nicolas Cage, this film takes terror to a whole new level. While it’s not common to find films identical to “Longlegs,” there is a cinematic history, albeit brief, filled with movies that have borrowed elements from its style.
If viewers are eager for more after watching “Longlegs” in theaters, they have several engaging ways to continue their horror journey. Ranging from bone-chilling horror films to gripping serial killer investigations and intriguing mysteries, “Longlegs” will introduce fans to an exciting new realm of cinema.
7 The Blackcoat’s Daughter (2015)
IMDB Score: 5.9
- Directed By: Oz Perkins
- Starring: Kiernan Shipka, Emma Roberts
For those who are avid fans of “Longlegs” and curious about the directorial debut of Oz Perkins, they should look back approximately ten years to the movie titled “The Blackcoat’s Daughter“. Boasting an impressive ensemble cast consisting of Kiernan Shipka, Lucy Boynton, and Emma Roberts, this chilling horror story centers around two girls who are stranded at a Catholic boarding school during winter vacation.
The girls need to join forces when they suspect the nuns who manage the school of involvement in satanic activities. This suspenseful film, divided into three parts, helped launch Perkins’ career and is also notable for his other early production “I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House”. However, among Perkins’ works, “The Blackcoat’s Daughter” stands out as a stylistic precursor to “Longlegs”, making it the ideal choice for those captivated by Perkins’ filmography.
6 The Empty Man (2020)
IMDB Score: 6.2
- Directed By: David Prior
- Starring: James Badge Dale, Marin Ireland
For those seeking a chilling, gradual horror experience with a strong supernatural undertone, check out “The Empty Man” (released in 2020). This film is an intriguing adaptation of a graphic novel and offers a unique blend of the bizarre and captivating. The story opens with a bone-chilling scene that sets the tone for this horror experience. The plot follows a retired detective on a quest to find a missing girl, which ultimately leads him to an ominous cult that pays homage to a malevolent entity.
In a remarkable fusion of investigation and sheer horror, “The Empty Man” stands out as a distinctive take on genre-blending. This makes it an unmissable find for fans of “Longlegs,” who are seeking more films with a comparable style.
5 Watcher (2022)
IMDB Score: 6.3
- Directed By: Chloe Okuno
- Starring: Maika Monroe, Burn Gorman
Maika Monroe’s popularity among fans of “Longlegs” stems from her compelling performances in the horror genre. Notably, she rose to fame with her role in the acclaimed film “It Follows,” and has since graced other horror productions such as “Watcher.”
In this movie, a young woman named Monroe and her boyfriend have just relocated to Bucharest. She becomes uneasy when she’s being observed by an unknown man, whom she suspects is the serial killer rumored to be at large in the city. The film’s suspenseful build-up, Monroe’s captivating portrayal, and Burt Gorman’s chilling performance as the mysterious observer make it a must-watch for fans of psychological thrillers reminiscent of “Longlegs.”
4 Disturbia (2007)
IMDB Score: 6.8
- Directed By: D.J. Caruso
- Starring: Shia LaBeouf, Sarah Roemer
As a gamer, if I were looking for a movie experience similar to “Longlegs” but with less intense horror elements, I would recommend checking out “Disturbia.” In this film, Shia Lebeouf plays the role of a teenager on house arrest who becomes fascinated with his neighbors. However, things take a dark turn when he suspects that one of them might be a serial killer. The suspense and tension in “Disturbia” are sure to keep you on the edge of your seat without being overly terrifying.
If supporters of “Longlegs” are yearning for more serial killer stories on their screens, they’ll be captivated by the intensity of “Disturbia”. Although “Rear Window” has been replicated numerous times, “Disturbia” stands out as a top-notch contemporary take on this genre, making it an excellent choice for those seeking PG-13 horror films with a slightly milder scare factor than “Longlegs”.
3 Zodiac (2007)
IMDB Score: 7.7
- Directed By: David Fincher
- Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo
As a huge fan of gripping investigative thrillers with a chill down my spine, I must admit that only a select few directors can rival the mastery of Longlegs in this genre, and one of them is none other than David Fincher. His films, including “Fight Club” and “Zodiac,” have left an indelible mark on me. In “Zodiac,” Fincher brought to life a true story about the elusive Zodiac killer who terrorized San Francisco in the ’60s and ’70s.
The movie focuses on a cartoonist who develops an unhealthy fixation with a serial killer and collaborates with crime journalists and police officers to shed light on the criminal’s identity. With fewer horror aspects but delivering an exceptional mystery thriller, Zodiac is a remarkable film that will have audiences thoroughly engrossed in trying to solve the puzzle.
2 Seven (1995)
IMDB Score: 8.6
- Directed By: David Fincher
- Starring: Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman
I can’t forget about the groundbreaking film that came before “Zodiac” and made David Fincher a household name in Hollywood. It was none other than “Se7en,” a movie that left an indelible mark on me as a gamer and on everyone who watched it. This game-changing production transformed the investigative genre, pushing boundaries with its chilling narrative and terrorizing viewers like never before.
In this rendition, the movie focused on two investigators pursuing a ruthless murderer who drew motivation from the seven deadly sins for his heinous crimes. The noir ambiance, the meticulous probe, the chilling terror of certain scenes, and the superb ensemble make “Se7en” an excellent succession to “Longlegs” for lucky viewers encountering this cinematic masterpiece for the first time.
1 The Silence Of The Lambs (1991)
IMDB Score: 8.6
- Directed By: Jonathan Demme
- Starring: Anthony Hopkins, Jodie Foster
If Longlegs can be compared to anything, it’s more like “The Silence of the Lambs”: an extraordinary blend of genres and a cinematic masterpiece not just for its horror elements. This classic tale’s power lies in the intriguing dynamic between its two main characters – one being the brilliant yet terrifying cannibalistic serial killer, Hannibal Lecter, portrayed by Anthony Hopkins; the other, a young and determined female detective, played by Jodie Foster.
The connections between “Longlegs” and “The Silence of the Lambs” aren’t mere coincidences. The way “Longlegs” is written reveals clear influences from the Lecter and Clarice Starling storyline. Both novels share elements such as a horrifying serial killer, a suspenseful and gradual build-up of tension, and an intense exploration of the bizarre bond between contrasting characters. For avid fans of “Longlegs,” “The Silence of the Lambs” is a must-watch or re-watch, offering a similar thrilling experience.
