As a seasoned gamer with over three decades under my belt, I must say that these games have left quite an impression on me. Each one of them has managed to carve out a unique niche for itself in the vast landscape of role-playing games, effortlessly blending science fiction and fantasy elements to create immersive worlds that captivate players from all walks of life.
Science fiction and fantasy aren’t typically thought of as a matching pair. However, once you point out that Star Wars is essentially space wizards, they start to feel like the perfect combination, much like peanut butter and jelly. This duality extends to the gaming world just as it does in television and film. For instance, there are numerous excellent RPGs that seamlessly merge science and fantasy.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve noticed that Role-Playing Games (RPGs) often conjure images of magic and mythical creatures, but there’s a significant group that draws heavy influence from science fiction. Some games lean more towards one genre or the other, but this list is all about showcasing titles that skillfully blend both worlds. To keep things fresh, I’ve made sure to exclude repetitive entries from the same franchise, except for Final Fantasy. Each game in that series offers a unique experience, making it worthwhile to include more than one.
8 Final Fantasy 7
Science Fiction, Cyberpunk And Fantasy
Many devotees of JRPG games cherish Final Fantasy 7 uniquely due to several significant factors. Released in 1997 for the PS1, it stands out as one of the most remarkable turn-based JRPGs, making a profound impact on gamers at that time. A key factor contributing to its allure is its captivating environment: a blend of cyberpunk aesthetics with advanced technology and mystical elements. The antagonist, Shinra Corporation, exploits the planet’s life force by generating Mako energy, which results in “materia” – magical artifacts.
Showcasing settings reminiscent of a future world, such as Midgar, Final Fantasy 7 could appear to delve deeper into science fiction; however, its narrative intertwines age-old enigmas like the Cetra civilization. The character, Sephiroth, a genetic experiment, and his rise are linked to an ancient prophecy. Combining elements of dystopian cyberpunk, fantasy, and moral warnings about ecology and corporate exploitation, Final Fantasy 7‘s story maintains a delicate balance between multiple plotlines, largely succeeding in keeping them all afloat.
7 Chrono Trigger
Time Travelling Through The Ages
In its opening, Chrono Trigger adopts a familiar setup for Japanese role-playing games, introducing a young villager embarking on a quest to save his hometown’s princess. However, as the story unfolds, an unexpected time portal emerges, whisking players through various eras: the Stone Age, a desolate future, and a mystical realm where they must unite forces to vanquish Lavos, an insidious extraterrestrial menace.
In this game, various gaming genres are seamlessly combined, with distinct time periods influencing different aspects. One instant, you might be employing magic to slay goblins and dragons, while in another, you’re speed racing bikes and enlisting robots into your team. A talking frog who is also a skilled swordsman adds to the game’s unique character roster. When it was launched, the time-traveling narrative and the inclusion of a time machine to alter game settings made Chrono Trigger one of the most groundbreaking role-playing games. It remains innovative even today.
6 Chained Echoes
Combining Magic And Mechs
In recent times, there has been a renewed interest in traditional Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPGs) that are turn-based, and this is mainly due to independent studios led by longtime JRPG enthusiasts. A notable example of such a game is Chained Echoes. This indie JRPG combines classic fantasy elements with robust science fiction influences. The game takes place in the continent of Alandis, which has been ravaged by war, and features a world where magic and mechanical giants cohabit.
The world has been torn apart by a generations-long conflict, a war that the game’s heroes are trying to end. Doing so means visiting medieval-inspired towns and monster-infested dungeons one second and battling robots in high-tech facilities the next. The player can even use Mechs called “Sky Armors” to battle enemies both on the ground and in the sky. The game’s lore does an excellent job of explaining this blend of magic and technology – ancient advanced civilizations once wielded powerful technology, now lost and misunderstood thanks to decades of war.
5 Star Ocean: The Second Story R
Ignoring The Prime Directive
As a dedicated fan, I’d liken the Star Ocean series to an alternate universe where the Star Trek: Enterprise crew routinely disregarded the Prime Directive. Each installment in this franchise follows a pattern: characters from a technologically advanced, interstellar civilization find themselves marooned on a primitive planet that’s essentially stuck in its medieval era. And so begins Star Ocean: The Second Story R, where members of the Pangalactic Federation end up shipwrecked on Expel, a world brimming with magic and ancient technology.
In this game, both the futuristic and fantastical elements are skillfully woven together. You get to pick between two main characters: Claude, a Federation officer, or Rena, an Expel native who possesses enigmatic powers. The game boasts classic sci-fi features such as spaceships, teleportation, and lasers. However, it also offers magical spells, mythical creatures, and ancient ruins to delve into. The primary mission, which involves seeking the “Ten Wise Men” and reaching the “Sorcery Globe”, is as fantastical as they come. Later installments in the series lean more towards sci-fi elements, but this remake, one of the best HD-2D JRPGs in recent times, successfully strikes a captivating balance between both worlds.
4 Phantasy Star 4
A Futuristic World With Fantasy Tropes
Title Star Phantasy 4 suggests that the developers aimed for a blend of dark fantasy and sci-fi genres. The game cleverly combines classic dark fantasy JRPG elements with a unique sci-fi setting, the “Algol Star System”. The story revolves around a young hunter named Chaz Ashley and his companions, who engage in a fierce struggle against an ancient evil called the Dark Force. This villain, the antagonist from earlier games, has been resurrected by Zio, the Black Magician, with the intention of annihilating the entire Algol Star System.
In this game, titled Motavia, players journey through various types of landscapes, from advanced cities such as Piata, enchanted sites like the Air Castle, to quaint, old-school RPG towns. The characters engage in combat using laser swords and mystical abilities known as “techniques,” facing off against both legendary creatures like dragons and futuristic-themed genetically engineered foes, including robots. As the game reaches its climax, the narrative becomes more intertwined with past installments, alluding to incidents such as the “Great Collapse” and ancient prophecies, giving it a traditional fantasy JRPG feel.
3 Final Fantasy 15
A Prince Vs. The Ultimate Evil
In comparison to most JRPGs, the setting of “Final Fantasy 15” is quite unusual. While certain elements, such as its towns, vehicles, and rest stops, seem modern, other features like the Niflheim military veer into science fiction territory. However, you’ll also encounter fantasy elements that are hard to ignore, including mountains shaped like tortoises, colossal serpent monsters, titans supporting massive magical crystal structures. The narrative is equally peculiar; it begins with four friends embarking on a road trip for their friend’s wedding, but the journey quickly spirals out of control.
In the realm of Eos, it’s primarily the Lucis royal family, including protagonist Noctis, who wield magic. Common folk rely on firearms and mechs for combat. Civilians move around using contemporary cars and run-down vans, while high-tech military airships reminiscent of science fiction films soar overhead. As the game progresses towards one of Final Fantasy’s most compelling conclusions, it gradually shifts towards classic fantasy elements, centering on age-old bloodlines, prophecies, and a millennia-old evil that seeks to shroud the world in darkness.
2 Xenoblade Chronicles
Life On A Titan
The Xenoblade series merges elements of science fiction and fantasy across its games, but the original title leans more towards fantasy. This game takes place on the colossal corpses of two ancient titans, Bionis and Mechonis, who perished in a battle that occurred ages ago. The side of Bionis is inhabited by biological creatures, including various races and beings reminiscent of fantasy lore. On the other hand, Mechonis houses mechanical entities, similar to those found in the world of Horizon.
The game centers around Shulk, a typical hero in a fantasy RPG setting, who possesses the Monado, an enigmatic artifact that alters reality and foretells future events. As Shulk journeys through vibrant, magical landscapes teeming with colossal beasts and imposing mechanical edifices, he discovers secrets about his world’s origin and the civilization that once thrived there. Although the narrative leans towards science fiction, it includes familiar fantasy tropes such as mystical swords, deified beings, and destined figures.
1 Final Fantasy 6
Magic Vs. Technology
Final Fantasy VI, a game in the beloved series, doesn’t require any introduction. It’s not often you’ll encounter someone who dislikes this title among the various Final Fantasy games. The story is set in a world where magic was once dominant, but has been largely replaced by steam-powered technology reminiscent of steampunk aesthetics. Initially, the narrative follows a band of rebels opposing the tyrannical Gestahlian Empire. This empire seeks global domination through the use of “magitek”, an ominous blend of magic and machinery.
In essence, Final Fantasy 6 presents a unique mix of fantasy JRPG elements and steampunk science fiction. You’ll encounter Magitek-powered Mech suits, advanced airships, mythical beasts, and Espers – deity-like beings capable of summoning. As the story progresses, it leans more towards fantasy, with the antagonist, Kefka, transforming into a godly figure who wreaks havoc on the world. The game uses this blend to convey a narrative that seems like a warning against the perils of rapid technological growth, which can lead to environmental degradation and the disregard for ancient customs.
