As someone who’s spent countless hours traversing through various dimensions and eras, I can confidently say that these time-traveling RPGs have left quite an impact on my gaming journey! From the gripping narrative of Radiant Historia to the intricate puzzles in Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, these games offer a unique blend of strategy, exploration, and storytelling that keeps me hooked.
Time mechanics can be some of the coolest features in games if implemented well. For example, Loop Hero finds players in a wasteland trying to rebuild the world one death at a time before everything reverts. Then there are games like Braid which gives players direct control over time powers. They can rewind time in case they made a mistake which is also true for various Prince of Persia games.
How about discussing Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs) that effectively utilize time themes? I’d like to share a few examples, some of which are well-known while others might not have received much attention at first. Be aware that there may be spoilers ahead.
8 Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
Giving Players The Ability To Relive Choices
In most games, once decisions are made, they’re irreversible, and you have to restart or load a save to view different outcomes. The PSP version of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, with its numerous timeline-altering choices, introduced an innovative way to manipulate time. At key moments, players can enter a timeline that displays every significant and insignificant choice made in the game, showing how each decision splits off into different paths. This isn’t a time-travel mechanic acknowledged by the characters within the story, but rather a convenient feature for players to avoid having to replay the game numerous times.
7 Fire Emblem Awakening
Making Babies With A Loophole
In the realm of Fire Emblem, Awakening brought numerous innovative elements to the series, such as introducing a casual mode catered to Western audiences for the first time, despite this concept being previously employed in Japan. The series had always emphasized relationships, but Awakening took it to another level with some intense pairings. Characters could even have children, and these offspring would mysteriously appear fully grown from a time rift, prepared to join battles. For instance, Lucina was born through time manipulation, which is one of the more unusual time mechanics seen in gaming. Although players don’t control the progression of time directly, the way it’s utilized is undeniably clever.
6 Bravely Default
A Climactic Twist Of Time
In essence, “Bravely Default” strongly evoked the spirit of traditional “Final Fantasy” games. It shared features like the Job system, turn-based battles, elemental crystals, and more. Around the one-third mark, however, an unexpected revelation unfolded – a time distortion phenomenon.
The game re-sets, compelling the characters to relive the events anew with fresh insights. This is another instance where time manipulation isn’t within our control, but it plays a crucial role in the narrative since players may find themselves trapped in this temporal loop multiple times and can influence outcomes based on decisions made. The fairy friend Airy was responsible for maintaining this cycle.
5 Mario & Luigi: Partners In Time
Two Brothers Become Four
The game Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time was the second installment in the role-playing series featuring Mario and Luigi. In this adventure, an alien invasion creates rifts in time. These portals thrust our heroes into various timelines. Upon encountering their infant selves under imminent threat, they join forces to combat the extraterrestrial invaders. Players navigate between past and present, with minor alterations shaping the progression of events. Interacting with all four characters (two pairs from different timeframes) adds an interesting twist to the active turn-based combat system. Essentially, it’s a narrative device, but the ability to engage with all four characters enhances the active turn-based battles in an innovative way.
4 Final Fantasy 13-2
Using Monsters To Fix The Past And Future
In Final Fantasy 13-2, we find ourselves following a direct sequel to the original, with Serah taking on the lead role. Lightning is absent, lost in a temporal rift. To help search for her, Serah teams up with Noel, an individual tasked with maintaining the balance of time. A small Moogle companion joins them, capable of facilitating time travel. Players will journey through various epochs, attempting to rectify temporal imbalances while searching for Lightning. It’s not often that actions in one period significantly impact another, but completing a mission helps restore balance and unlock new possibilities for time travel exploration. The novel twist in gameplay comes with the party members, as Serah and Noel can add a monster to their third-party slot.
3 Radiant Historia
Using Time To Redo Mistakes
In a somber beginning, the protagonist Stocke experiences defeat in battle and watches as his team is eliminated. However, fate bestows upon him the ability to traverse time through a mystical book called a grimoire. Immediately, he seizes this opportunity to investigate the trap that led to his group’s demise, thereby gaining vital knowledge to help save his fallen comrades.
In this turn-based RPG, players encounter numerous puzzle-like situations they must solve to progress. These include convincing characters to change their minds and navigating past monsters. This game marks the debut of time travel as a playable mechanic in an innovative way.
2 Dragon Quest 7: Fragments Of The Forgotten Past
Piecing The Puzzling Past Back Together
Dragon Quest 7: Shards of Forgotten Time
1 Chrono Trigger
One Of The Firsts To Do It
Back in the day, I found myself utterly captivated by “Chrono Trigger,” one of the pioneering JRPGs that seamlessly blended time travel into both its narrative and gameplay aspects. The story unfolded as mysterious fissures appeared across the globe, leading to different epochs – from medieval-like periods to futuristic landscapes. These rifts allowed us, the players, to traverse these timelines, experiencing diverse worlds that were as captivating as they were intriguing.
