Summary

  • Love-hate relationships in manhwa create tension, leading to daring and fiery resolutions in the series.

  • Complex romances like Astina & Theriod showcase past-life connections and fiery developments.

In many manhwa, particularly those categorized as shoujo or romance, you’ll often find complicated love-hate dynamics. These series thrive on the tension between characters, keeping readers on the edge of their seats as they witness heated exchanges between individuals who are too prideful to acknowledge their feelings openly. This intricate dance of emotions can leave readers biting their nails in anticipation.

However, when those deep-seated emotions eventually erupt, they can explode dramatically and passionately, sometimes resulting in beautiful and romantic conclusions within the series – or catastrophic ruin for the couple and their environment, contingent on the narrative’s setting and plot trajectory. Here are some of the most captivating love-hate relationships portrayed in manhwa.

8. Raeliana & Noah (The Reason Why Raeliana Ended Up At The Duke’s Mansion)

She Was Interested For Selfish Reasons, He Was There To Support Her

  • Genres: Romance, Fantasy, Isekai, Drama
  • Author: Milcha
  • Artist: Whale

In the opening of this romantic fantasy tale, Raeliana realizes her impending demise. To circumvent this fate, she enters into a sham betrothal with Duke Noah Wynknight, which proves advantageous for both in terms of political gain as they chase their desired “happy ending.” Initially, the relationship appears transactional; however, it evolves into a spirited and amusing power tussle. They engage in games against each other and occasionally collude with others, all while maintaining an illusion.

However, it’s no surprise that their tension escalates, with both characters eventually developing feelings for one another. Noah, instinctively, begins to safeguard Raeliana, harboring a hidden jealousy. Despite their frequent quarrels, neither can acknowledge their growing affection. As the story progresses, Raeliana starts recognizing her own emotions due to Noah’s persistent teasing. This realization eventually prompts the disgraced former villainess to confront the Duke, leading them both to reveal their true selves and form a romantic relationship.

7. Astina & Theriod (The Lady And The Beast)

Courting A Beast Cannot Be Easy

  • Genres: Romance, Fantasy, Drama, Historical, Reincarnation
  • Author: Hongseul
  • Artist: Sumpul

In the realm of romantic fantasy comics, Astina and Theriod’s bond is one of the most intricate love-hate relationships. It’s also shrouded in mystery, as they are revealed to be reincarnations of their past selves. Interestingly, despite her feelings for Theodor (her past-life lover and source of both affection and animosity), Astina remains bound to Theriod. Unlike Astina, Theriod cannot recall his previous life, but he is haunted by a dreadful curse stemming from the malevolence Martina unleashed upon his ancestry. Each night, he transforms into a beast unless Astina expresses affection towards him, which gradually alleviates the curse’s impact.

Initially, Astina assumes control over the Van Atalanta household and guides the Archduke through his beastly phase, but as she uncovers the means to lift the curse, they both find themselves developing feelings for one another. Later on, Astina discloses that she is a reborn Empress Martina, and believes him to be her former lover. This revelation shatters Theriod, causing him to doubt himself and their bond. As time passes, everything appears to be falling apart, hinting at an impending divorce. However, a significant incident occurs that makes them recognize the depth of their feelings for each other, ultimately saving their relationship from dissolution.

6. Atisse & Ephyr (Latna Saga)

No Matter The Societal Status (Or The Species) Love Is Love

  • Genres: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Isekai
  • Author: Writing Pine
  • Artist: Studio HIVE

In the world of draconic beings, there exists a tense relationship between Atisse and Ephyr, who, despite their shared species, are frequently at odds due to differences in status and magical prowess. This dynamic is particularly disheartening for Ryu Han-Bin to witness. Recently, Ephyr, a Wyvern with the remarkable ability to transform into a human girl, has come under Atisse’s guidance and mentorship, as if an elder brother figure. However, Ephyr’s growing comfort with her newfound powers has led her to act increasingly impulsive and even reckless, which Atisse strongly disapproves of and frequently reprimands.

The situation has shown to be quite tumultuous, with their relationship fluctuating between cooperation and deep-seated mistrust, then a tentative truce, and eventually, a strong sense of mutual respect. However, as many fans had anticipated, Ephyr and Atisse ultimately form a bond based on trust (and develop romantic feelings). Initially, Atisse maintains a distance from Ephyr due to his personal pursuits, but in the end, they grow increasingly close, and adversity eventually brings them so near that it reignites the hidden romantic emotions between them.

5. Gestella & Kayden (ELECEED)

A Kill Or Love Kind Or Relationship

  • Genre: Shonen, Action, Comedy, Martial Arts, Urban Fantasy, Dystopian, Mystery
  • Author: Jeho Son
  • Artist: ZHENA

From my perspective as an avid fan, this rollercoaster of emotions stems from one of the most absurd misconceptions ever encountered in manhwa. It all started when Kayden Pierce embarked on a crusade, daring the Top 10 awakeners worldwide to a combat. Alas, no one took up his challenge. Undeterred, Kayden shifted strategies and began issuing formal, respectful invitations – or so I presume they were. One such invitation found its way into Gestella’s hands, who, in her interpretation, perceived it as a duel for romantic purposes rather than a simple challenge.

Initially, Gestella ventured out to meet Kayden, a prospect she found intriguing. However, instead of the warm welcome she anticipated, Kayden launched an unexpected attack, causing her to retreat in shock and anger back to her sanctuary. Years later, she continues to harbor resentment towards him for his past transgression. Yet, Kayden has come to acknowledge Gestella’s feelings and is aware that his actions were inappropriate. Over time, they have grown more tolerant of each other’s presence and have learned to navigate their differences. Now, in a surprising turn of events, Gestella is attempting to win Kayden over by shielding his apprentice from rival high-rankers. Remarkably, this tactic appears to be proving effective.

4. Medea & Helio (Your Throne)

One Of The Most Complicated Love-Hate Relationships Ever

  • Genres: Drama, Fantasy, Psychological
  • Author: SAM
  • Artist: SAM

For nearly ten years, Medea and Helio shared a relationship that was more intimate than friendship but less passionate than love. However, as time went on, Helio found himself developing genuine feelings for her. Unfortunately, Medea’s mind was fixated on political maneuvers and deceit, which put immense pressure on their bond. Despite this, Helio remained a loyal confidant and ally in her schemes, often sacrificing his own well-being to support her agenda. Since the swap of bodies between Medea and Psyche, Helio has been like a doll tossed around on an emotional rollercoaster ride.

In simpler terms, Helio quickly realized something was amiss between Medea and Psyche because they were very close, but their bond seemed to strain after Psyche took Medea’s place. This confusion led him to confront Psyche to uncover the truth. Since he was deeply in love with Medea, this situation became complicated, as he expressed his feelings to Psyche while she inhabited Medea’s body. Despite their disagreements and mutual dislike, they eventually collaborated. Helio taught Psyche how to act like Medea and protect herself, which ultimately helped him, as he was able to demonstrate that he knew Medea better than anyone else.

3. John & Seraphina (UnOrdinary)

When Light Seemed To Have Found A Way, It Took A Twist For The Worst

  • Genres: Action, Supernatural, School Life, Drama
  • Author: Uru-Chan
  • Artist: Uru-Chan

The heartbreaking story of characters John Doe and Seraphina in UnOrdinary is a tale destined for the chronicles of unreturned affection. From an unfavorable start, their bond developed due to their contrasting social standings within the world of the series – John burdened by his traumatic past and driven by revenge, while Seraphina shaped by her upbringing and status as one of the top students, creating a whirlwind of feelings. Over time, Seraphina develops affection for John, yet when she comes close enough to uncover the reasons behind his hidden powers (and motives), he distances himself due to his disdain for the elite that he despises so deeply.

In the end, John transforms into a kind of brooding vigilante, harsh and aggressive. Seraphina endeavors to mend his emotional wounds, discovering she has feelings for him, yet is unable to penetrate the dense barriers of hurt and trauma that shroud John’s emotions. Their recurring arguments and clashes, with Seraphina striving to maintain an impeccable image (as societal norms demand), lead to a growing distance between them. Although their affection was never destined to be, it served as a poignant demonstration of a love-hate relationship that failed to attain its intended conclusion.

2. Ji-Eun Han & Hyun-Ho Lee (Something About Us)

Lovely, Endearing, And Sometimes Maddening

  • Genres: Romance, Drama, Comedy, Slice of Life
  • Author: Lee Yun Ji
  • Artist: Lee Yun Ji

This manhwa offers a humorous take on romance and the subtle connections between people, focusing on a protagonist ensnared in a complex love-hate dynamic. Despite Ji-Eun and Hyun-Ho sharing a long history of friendship, they have consistently struggled to break through the barrier that keeps friends from becoming lovers, a challenge that has led to sweet yet confusing miscommunications. Both characters find themselves chasing after each other while also being too headstrong to fully commit, resulting in an intriguing dance where neither is willing to take the decisive step.

Despite all the arguments, petty squabbles, jealousy, complicated relationships, and dramatic scenes, it’s worth the journey as they eventually grow closer and transition from friends to lovers. As this is a romantic comedy, there will be cheesy and touching moments that readers might find relatable enough to empathize with their story, making room in their hearts for a relationship that has already unfolded.

1. Melissa & Nine (Beware The Villainess!)

Please Get Married Already! Thank You

  • Genres: Romance, Comedy, Fantasy, Isekai
  • Author: Berry
  • Artist: Soda Ice

Melissa and Nine from Beware The Villainess are a pair who leave readers shouting, “Just tie the knot!” Their continuous ups and downs, quarrels, intrusive third parties, and even periods of separation create an intense atmosphere. By this point in most romantic comedies, it would be normal for them to have completed all the necessary steps as a married couple. However, their inflexibility is renowned, and they continue to prolong courtship and romance through frequent breakups.

Nine’s humility has always stirred a nurturing response in Melissa, causing her to be excessively protective towards him. In return, Nine is deeply grateful to Melissa for rescuing him from the streets, so he remains fiercely loyal to her. This dynamic might explain why their love-hate relationship, filled with both charm and conflict, stands out among many manhwa couples.
