As a connoisseur of all things anime, I must say that each of these characters has left an indelible mark not only on their respective series but also in the vast expanse of the anime world.
Creating an unforgettable anime character often involves employing unique features such as scars, distinctive clothing, hats, or masks. These elements can set a character apart from others, lending them a greater degree of individuality. Masks, in particular, are commonly used in tales of heroes and villains, like those found in “My Hero Academia” and “Demon Slayer.” The use of masks serves multiple purposes, including concealing one’s identity regardless of their intentions (be they good or evil). This added layer of mystery only heightens the character’s allure for the audience.
Masks come in a multitude of forms, dimensions, and intricate designs – the more distinctive they are, the more captivating they prove to be for enthusiasts. Here is a selection of some of the most renowned anime masks that have graced the anime universe thus far.
9 Licht Bach
Plunderer
- Genres: Action, Fantasy, Romance, Ecchi
- N. Episodes: 24 (S1)
- Where To Watch: Crunchyroll, Netflix
In a world where legends walk among us, I find myself drawn to the enigmatic figure known as the Flash Baron, or as history records him, Sakai Rihito. This exceptional individual was one of the seven Legendary Red Barons who bravely fought in the Abandonment War, a conflict that took place three centuries ago.
Under a series of masks reminiscent of traditional Japanese Noh theater, Licht often concealed his true self from public view, accompanying these disguises with various outfits. Yet, when people are in peril, he finds it challenging to stay unnoticed as an overwhelming urge to safeguard them arises, often leading to the unveiling of his hidden identity.
8 Tobi
Naruto
Initially, Tobi is introduced in Naruto as a mysterious character, associated with the Akatsuki – a powerful league of S-rank ninjas aiming to seize all the tailed beasts, including the one within Naruto. Throughout his appearances, Tobi dons an orange mask featuring a distinct design, concealing his true identity.
For much of the narrative, Tobi keeps his true visage hidden, even from his companions. Over time, Tobi’s mask and innocent demeanor come to symbolize the good guys suffering defeats whenever he is present, as Naruto consistently suffers losses when Tobi appears. However, in a significant turn of events, Tobi’s mask gets smashed following a Rasengan attack, unveiling his true identity: Obito Uchiha, Kakashi’s long-lost friend who was believed to be deceased until that moment.
7 Lelouch
Code Geass
In the Code Geass universe, I’m Lelouch vi Britannia, the central figure. At the outset, I slip on my famous mask and Zero attire. Facing off against a ruthless government that stripped me of everything, I take on the leadership of a militant group, hell-bent on avenging my father, the King of Britannia.
Due to his intricate persona, Lelouch must conceal his true identity as a prince of Britannia from everyone, even his allies. Throughout most of the narrative, both enemies and companions attempt to uncover his identity, but Lelouch’s remarkable intelligence consistently keeps him hidden in mystery. Eventually, Lelouch hands over the Zero mask to his most trusted friend, Suzaku, who assumes the role of Zero following him.
6 Tuxedo Mask
Sailor Moon
In everyday terms: Tuxedo Mask’s real name is Mamoru Chiba, who in this life has taken the place of Prince Endymion. As a child, he tragically lost his parents in a car crash, leaving him as the lone survivor and erasing his memory of his past. Ever since that devastating night, he’s been experiencing recurring dreams about a mysterious girl who needs aid to recover the “Silver Crystal”.
His dreams suggested that this crystal could help him recall his past, which prompted him to start searching for it. He chose to hide his true identity as Tuxedo Mask while working alongside Sailor Moon in their quest. The mask he wears is white, shielding his eyes from both good and evil. This distinctive mask has been recognized since the 90s.
5 Hatake Kakashi
Naruto
In the series, Kakashi Hatake is recognized as one of Konoha’s top Ninjas, often seen with a mask that conceals his nose, mouth, and chin. He seldom reveals his true face to others, leading some to speculate it’s due to a strong family resemblance to his father. The fortunate few who catch a glimpse of him unmasked find him quite attractive.
Based on certain beliefs, because his father was widely known as an infamous ninja who had slain numerous foes, Kakashi feared being confused with him and becoming a target instead.
4 Tomura Shigaraki
My Hero Academia
In the anime series “My Hero Academia,” Tomura Shigaraki serves as a principal antagonist. He grew up under the tutelage of All For One, eventually taking over as the head of the Villain League. His life’s mission is to eliminate All Might and everything he symbolizes by causing societal turmoil and anarchy.
Tomura’s villain costume carries a unique and unsettling aura, given that the hands attached to it are from individuals he killed and preserved. Many of these hands belong to his family members, such as his mother, grandparents, and even his father. Among these, one hand, used to conceal his identity, is his father’s left hand, which Tomura affectionately refers to as “Father.” Despite the chilling nature of this style, it has ensured that he remains a memorable figure.
3 Shizue Izawa
That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime
In a past time, Shizu was famously recognized as the Mistress of Fire and part of the Free Guild Headquarters. It was during the air raids of Tokyo in World War II that she was summoned to this realm by a Demon Lord named Leon Cromwell. Leon aimed to bring forth Chloe Aubert, yet when Shizu appeared before him, he discovered an alternative purpose for her. To maintain dominance over the Flame Giant Ifrit who possessed her body, Leon equipped Shizu with an Anti-Magic Mask.
This mask is equipped with protection against magic, provides a counteracting effect like an antidote, offers aid for breathing, and enhances the wearer’s senses. Later on, it was passed from its original possessor to Rimuru, eventually ending up in the hands of Chloe Aubert.
2 Ken Kaneki
Tokyo Ghoul
Initially, Kaneki Ken lived an ordinary student life in Tokyo, immersed in the study of Japanese literature. His days were filled with reading and spending time with his close friend Hideyoshi. Everything altered when he encountered Rize, a charming girl who had captured his affection. That fateful encounter irrevocably transformed his existence. On one particular night, they went out on a date, and the revelation of Rize’s true nature as a ghoul put him in grave danger.
Following a devastating accident that claimed her life and left him gravely wounded, Kaneki ended up at the hospital where he recuperated due to doctors transplanting some of Rize’s organs into his own body. Remarkably, this procedure also incorporated Rize’s unique ghoul organ (known as a kakuhou), which ultimately transformed him into a half-ghoul, with one eye.
To conceal his fresh persona, during daylight hours he donned an eyepatch over his damaged eye, while under the cover of darkness he donned a mask that obscured his human visage. His ghoul mask was fashioned from leather, featuring a wide maw and jagged teeth, as well as neck bolts to evoke a Frankenstein-esque aesthetic. This mask is among the most recognizable in the realm of anime.
1 Tanjiro
Demon Slayer
In the initial season, Tanjiro’s distinctive Hakuko Mask makes its appearance. His master, Sakonji Urokodaki, provided this mask carved with a fox during Tanjiro’s preparations for the Final Selection test. This mask serves as a tradition, as each of his students, including Sabito and Makomo, received one to protect themselves in combat.
During Tanjiro’s battle against the Hand Demon, his mask eventually cracks, yet it continues to be revered in anime fandom and is often seen as a symbol of the character. This mask has also become a common choice for cosplay, along with his Hanafuda earrings, at events like Otakuthon and Halloween, embodying this beloved character.
