One commonly loved comic book genre in South Korea, often referred to as martial-fantasy manhwa, offers an enthralling blend of martial arts, mysticism, and valiant exploits, often unfolding within a grandiose and mythical landscape. The term “murim” generally signifies a community that practices martial arts, with the genre drawing its influence from the rich martial arts culture of East Asia.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but be captivated by the world of manhwa heavily steeped in martial arts culture. These stories delve deeply into the intriguing connection between the physical and the mystical, offering pulse-pounding narratives that leave me on the edge of my seat. The genre is versatile, embracing an array of subgenres to cater to a wider audience.
Now, when it comes to the top murim manhwa, they’re nothing short of exhilarating! Each series transports you into a thrilling journey filled with action, adventure, and a touch of the spiritual. They’re truly a must-read for any martial arts enthusiast!
Nano Machine
Anime-Planet: 4.36/5
- Author: Hanjungwolya, Geumgangbulgoe
- Chapters: 276+
- Status: Ongoing
- Webtoon (Up to Chapter 5)
In this narrative, the central character, Yeon-Woo Cheon, appears predestined for a life marked by vulnerability and subjugation. However, an extraordinary artifact called the Nano Machine unexpectedly finds its way into his possession, imbuing him with a novel power source. Seizing upon this serendipitous moment, Yeon-Woo expeditiously climbs the hierarchical ladder of the demonic world, bolstered by the Nano Machine’s capabilities, growing exponentially more powerful in the process. With ambitions to ascend to the pinnacle of the Heavenly Demonic Cult’s strength, Yeon-Woo is compelled to demonstrate his might to all who stand in his path. The tale blends the conventional theme of a protagonist who continually strengthens, resulting in an enthralling reading experience.
As a dedicated manga lover, I’ve got to say, diving into the world of Nano Machine feels like embarking on an exhilarating journey that masterfully combines elements of Murim, fantasy, and sci-fi genres – a unique fusion that’s not easy to come by! Revenge serves as the heart and soul of this extraordinary narrative, solidifying its position among the all-time great manhwas.
The Breaker
Anime-Planet: 4.34/5

- Author: Jeon Geuk-jin
- Chapters: 72 (Original Series)
- Status: Complete (Original Series)
In my observations, “The Breaker” skillfully merges the ancient realm of Murim with contemporary society, creating an exhilarating fusion. The narrative revolves around Shi Woon Yi, a high school student frequently victimized by bullies in his school. However, when he serendipitously encounters that the new teacher, Chunwoo Han, possesses extraordinary martial arts prowess, his life undergoes a profound shift. Intrigued by his teacher’s abilities, Shi Woon petitions Chunwoo to take him as a disciple and teach him self-defense techniques. As a result, Shi Woon inducts himself into the perilous world of Murim, where only the powerful can thrive.
It’s reasonable to consider that among all manhwa in the murim genre, “The Breaker” stands out as particularly impactful and significant. Originally published between 2007 and 2010, this series played a key role in bringing South Korean webtoons to global attention. Its popularity was so great that it led to two follow-ups, with the second one, titled “The Breaker: Eternal Force,” still ongoing today.
What sets “The Breaker” apart is its unconventional protagonist, Shiwoon. Unlike many other characters in this genre, Shiwoon isn’t overly powerful. In fact, there are instances where he appears unusually weak compared to other characters, which adds an interesting twist to the storyline.
While The Breaker and New Waves are not on Webtoon, The Breaker: Eternal Force is part of the site.
Return of the Blossoming Blade
Anime-Planet: 4.46/5

In most martial arts cultures, dying in battle is considered an honor. However, Chung Myung, who is known as the Sword Saint, holds a different opinion. Centuries later, he miraculously awakens in the body of a young boy following a battle-induced death. With unwavering determination to regain his past standing as the Sword Saint, he returns to Mount Hua Sect, but upon his return, he encounters surprises that he wasn’t prepared for.
In its current state, the once-powerful Mount Hua Sect is barely recognizable and in a steep downward spiral. Despite the hardships, Chung Myung remains steadfast in his resolve to bring back the sect’s former grandeur. The “Return of the Blossoming Blade” stands out among murim manhwa for its endearing lead character, stunning artwork, and unique exploration of reincarnation. This manhwa masterfully intertwines action, humor, and emotion, with a strong emphasis on character growth being at the core.
Legend of the Northern Blade
Anime-Planet: 4.4/5

- Author: Hae-Min, Woogack
- Chapters: 202
- Status: Complete
- Tappytoon (Only 3 Chapters Are Free)
Saga of the Frozen Blade
The narrative unfolds around the imposing fortress known as the Northern Wall. The protagonist, Jin Mu-Won, assumes the mantle of sect leader from his martial art mentor and revered figure, who was known throughout Jianghu, a term synonymous with murim in this series. Although initially portrayed as feeble and hapless, Mu-Won’s apparent frailty serves as a facade as he embarks on a quest for vengeance against the Central Heavenly Alliance, an organization that orchestrated his father’s demise.
With a burning desire for retribution, Mu-Won vanishes mysteriously and later reappears after mastering the most advanced techniques from the Northern martial arts sect. However, rather than just a tale of revenge, it develops into a tumultuous tempest that has the potential to topple the entire murim world, with Jin Mu-Won at its epicenter.
Fist Demon of Mount Hua
Anime-Planet: 3.93/5

- Author: Woogack
- Chapters: 182
- Status: Canceled
Born with a crippled leg and facing discrimination, Dam-Ho’s circumstances for pursuing martial arts seemed bleak due to his disability. Despite being constantly ridiculed and told that he couldn’t become a martial artist, Dam-Ho was relentless in his pursuit of mastery to surpass his limitations. Believed to have perished during a disastrous journey, Dam-Ho was deserted by his sect beneath the debris of a mountain. Yet, with an unwavering will to live and exceed his boundaries, Dam-Ho reappeared as a feared master whose name alone stirred respect among all the murim.
Due to being canceled, it’s somewhat challenging to endorse “Fist Demon of Mount Hua” these days as the story may remain incomplete. However, the existing content is typically excellent, featuring stunning artwork and an engaging narrative with a powerful main character. Despite its unfinished status, “Fist Demon of Mount Hua” remains one of the top-notch “murim manhwa.
Chronicles of a Doomed Prodigy
Anime-Planet: 4.3/5

- Author: Cheongsiso, Seung-Ki Yoon
- Chapters: 50+
- Status: Ongoing
- Webtoon
A relatively fresh comic series titled “Chronicles of a Doomed Prodigy” has been gaining traction over the past year, with its digital availability on Webtoon attracting some attention. In terms of storyline, this comic follows a common pattern of the murim genre, focusing on an outcast who possesses extraordinary energy and the potential to become a highly powerful martial artist. However, he is born into a family that neither appreciates nor cultivates his talents, and he also appears to have a shortened lifespan. As a result, Yeonshin is not only striving to enhance his skills but also to extend his brief existence in the world of the living.
The Tales of the Predetermined Genius isn’t particularly packed with unexpected twists, choosing to narrate a rather typical martial arts story with a protagonist who is relatively ordinary. To clarify, Yeonshin possesses immense power and has an exceptional knack for inventing new martial arts techniques, enabling him to outmaneuver most adversaries. Yet, in terms of character, he lacks the flair and unpredictability that is common among the leads of such stories in the murim genre.
Absolute Sword Sense
Anime-Planet: 4.12/5

- Author: TI, Durumi Kim, Hanjungwolya
- Chapters: 149+
- Status: Ongoing
- Webtoon
In essence, “Absolute Sword Sense” embodies the classic essence of martial arts manhwa narratives, though not necessarily renowned for popularity. The narrative follows the conventional path for the genre. We encounter Woonhwi So, initially a powerless individual in this world’s primary energy source, who perishes during a mission for his clan but is miraculously reverted back to the life-altering day. This reincarnation comes with an extraordinary talent that offers combat advantage. The ensuing events involve typical inter-clan conflicts, grand battles, political intrigue, and our protagonist embarks on a gradual path of growth to achieve greater strength.
As an observer, I’ve noticed that while Absolute Sword Sense may seem somewhat familiar or predictable in its narrative, its success lies in its effectiveness. This manhwa doesn’t necessarily break new ground with its storyline, yet it truly shines in nearly every other aspect. From the captivating art style to the well-balanced pacing, thrilling fight sequences, and intricate world-building, Absolute Sword Sense consistently delivers a solid reading experience. Although it might not be the cream of the crop in any particular category, it more than holds its own across all aspects, earning respectable marks all around.
Return of the Mad Demon
Anime-Planet: 4.29/5

- Author: JP, Jinseong Yu
- Chapters: 167+
- Status: Ongoing
- Webtoon
Delving into the captivating world of “Return of the Mad Demon,” I must admit, the title alone piques my curiosity, hinting at a protagonist who’s anything but ordinary – a character that leaps off the page with a touch of the outrageous and over-the-top. And boy, does Jaha Lee deliver! This manhwa doesn’t skimp on its promise, with Jaha Lee embodying the “mad demon” label to a T, his actions frequently defying conventional logic. It’s a breath of fresh air to witness such an outlandish and unpredictable character, making this story an exhilarating read!
So, here’s the gist: Jaha aimed to be the deity of Martial Arts, yet he never achieved that status. His ambition brought many foes, leading to a decisive and tragic confrontation. Instead of venturing into the unknown after his defeat, Jaha finds himself transported back in time to his twenties. With insights from the future and martial arts abilities he honed over years, Jaha must now consider how best to utilize this information, knowing well that every choice brings about results.
Gosu
Anime-Planet: 4.15/5

- Author: Giun Ryu
- Chapters: 231
- Status: Complete
- Webtoon (Up to Chapter 21)
In this rephrased version, the story follows Gang Ryong, a martial artist who carries the vengeance of his master, Dokgo Ryong, also known as the Heavenly Destroyer. Once an unrivaled martial arts master in the murim realm, Dokgo Ryong was tragically betrayed by his followers and allies.
Gosu follows Gang Ryong, a martial artist seeking revenge for his master, Dokgo Ryong (Heavenly Destroyer), who was betrayed by his followers and allies in the murim realm.
In his final request, Gang Ryong’s master asks for vengeance, and Gang Ryong, armed with his master’s unparalleled martial arts, obliges. Bred to be the ultimate weapon against his master’s foes, Gang Ryong becomes incredibly powerful in his pursuit of fulfilling this last wish. At times showing his age, but at its best, Gosu is exceptional, showcasing some of the finest fight scenes in the murim genre. The upcoming anime adaptation promises to be thrilling.
Prior to diving into “Gosu”, I’d suggest giving “Yongbi the Invincible” a read first, as it serves as a precursor to the story. Likewise enjoyable!
