As a long-time fan of Mario and all things Nintendo, I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing a vast array of power-ups throughout the years. Some have left me feeling invincible, others have granted me the ability to soar through the skies, and yet others have transformed me into a monstrous giant. But among all these wondrous abilities, there is one mushroom that stands head and shoulders above the rest in my heart.
Mushrooms in video games, specifically those in the popular Mario series, are nearly interchangeable. Since their introduction in “Super Mario Bros.” (1985), mushroom variants have played significant roles. Red mushrooms, also known as Super Mushrooms, cause Mario to expand and gain an additional hit capacity. Meanwhile, green mushrooms, or 1-Ups, bestow upon the player an extra life when collected.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve noticed how mushrooms in the Mario universe have evolved beyond just being simple power-ups. They now offer various perks depending on the game! In some RPG titles, they act as healing items. And get this – in the racing games like Mario Kart, they provide a speed boost! Isn’t it fascinating how these humble mushrooms have adapted to different roles across the expansive Mario series? Here are some of the most useful mushroom types I’ve encountered.
10 Volt Mushroom
Paper Mario
In the initial three versions of “Paper Mario,” there was a surprising mushroom with a distinct function. Its utility, however, altered from one game to another. Every time this mushroom was employed, it triggered an electric charge in a character. In the first two editions, if an adversary came into contact with an electrified player, they sustained some harm. Conversely, in “Super Paper Mario,” the player could momentarily immobilize enemies upon touch without receiving any damage themselves.
In Super Paper Mario, the power of the Volt Mushroom can change depending on the game’s combination rules. At its peak performance, this effect lasts an impressive forty seconds.
9 Boo Mushroom
Super Mario Galaxy
In the game Super Mario Galaxy, you’ll find an impressive collection of mushrooms that differ from those in previous editions. The reason for this diversity lies in its gameplay, which bears a closer resemblance to Super Mario 64, deviating from the conventional power-ups used in other titles. Consequently, a diverse range of visually appealing mushrooms emerged, each with distinct capabilities. Among these is the spectral mushroom, granting players the ability to float like a ghost, pass through certain obstacles, and momentarily turn invisible. However, it comes with its setbacks as well.
In their usual state, Boos find Mario and Luigi unappealing. However, when the brothers transform into Boo forms, these creatures are drawn to them instead. Instead of recoiling at the sight of the brothers as they typically do, Boos are now attracted. If either brother gets hit by a Boo, they revert back to their normal selves. Additionally, Boos are susceptible to light and will lose their power-ups as a result. Unfortunately, similar to many power-ups in Super Mario Galaxy, the usefulness of the Boo Mushroom is diminished by its limited accessibility.
8 Propeller Mushroom
New Super Mario Bros.
In New Super Mario Bros., there’s a mushroom that grants players a brief ability to fly. Although Propeller Mushrooms in some titles may cause minor inconvenience with their erratic flight behavior, using them is generally enjoyable.
Playing the Super Mario series comes with moments requiring trust in your abilities, but these moments become less daunting when you have the power to soar over all hurdles and perils.
7 Drill Mushroom
Super Mario Bros. Wonder
In Super Mario Bros. Wonder World, Mario fans will recognize the classic move of going underground. Yet, this game introduces an enjoyable new take on that familiar idea.
The Drill Mushroom offers an enjoyable experience by enabling players to dig through floors and ceilings. Although its use depends on the game situation, this mushroom is a valuable tool for catching enemies off guard, either by hiding beneath the ground or launching surprise attacks from above.
6 Jelly Ultra
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
Some mushrooms, like the elusive Jelly Ultra, aren’t easily found and may necessitate additional efforts to acquire. In the video games “Paper Mario” and its successor “The Thousand-Year Door,” the most valuable mushrooms in each title can be prepared by cooking rather than obtained directly.
To prepare a powerful item in the game, the player needs to collect an Ultra Mushroom and a Jammin’ Jelly first. After obtaining these two items, approach either Tayce T. or Zess T. (depending on the specific game) for cooking them together. Once the cooking process is completed, the player will acquire a mushroom that restores 50 HP and 50 FP for both the player and their party members, enabling them to perform special moves.
5 Golden Dash Mushroom
Mario Kart
In the exciting world of Mario Kart, mushrooms are renowned for boosting a player’s speed. Among them, this particular mushroom stands out as being exceptionally swift. Different from common mushrooms or clusters of mushrooms that can be employed just once, the extraordinary Golden Dash Mushroom offers repeated usage to leave rivals far behind.
In many games, the Mushroom Cap Power-Up is a standard feature, but it has been restricted to specific racers like Toad, Toadette, King Boo, and Petey Pirahna in certain installments of Mario Kart. During these instances, these characters exclusively use this Power-Up. However, all four can make use of it in Mario Kart: Double Dash.
4 Max Mushroom
Mario & Luigi
In various Mario RPGs, numerous mushrooms help recover HP. Among them, the elusive Mex Mushroom stands out as an exceptional healer. Despite its unremarkable look, this fungus restores a full HP bar in most games it’s featured.
In subsequent versions, the healing capacity of this item is reduced to 160 or 240 HP. Despite this decrease, it remains a valuable asset due to its impressive healing abilities.
3 5-UP
Mario Vs Donkey Kong
As a huge fan of 1-UPs in games, I’ve got to say that “Mario vs Donkey Kong” took it to a whole new level for me. Instead of just getting that precious extra life with a 1-UP mushroom or balloon, this game offered something five times more exciting. In the mini-games, which you could unlock by collecting all the presents, I found these amazing “5-UPs.” Each one granted me not only an extra life but also unique abilities that made my gaming experience even more enjoyable and engaging. It was a true delight for any fan of the series!
In my experience as a fan, these objects are referred to as “five extra life givers.” Sadly, they have been eliminated in the latest game update. However, players can now amass several 1-Up pickups instead.
2 Mega Mushroom
New Super Mario Bros.
In most gaming situations, including “New Super Mario Bros.” on Wii and DS, a Mega Mushroom is an excellent addition. This mushroom causes Mario to expand to giant size, enabling him to shatter almost anything that brushes against him. The same concept applies in “Mario Kart Wii,” as the character grows larger and inflicts damage on most objects they encounter. Additionally, this mushroom provides a minor speed enhancement, similar to other mushrooms featured in “Mario Kart” games. However, its limited invincibility is outmatched by more powerful items like Bullet Bills and Stars.
While the iconic design for this mushroom debuted in New Super Mario Bros., it has existed since Mario Party 4. In this game, the player could use it to smash multiple dice and steal other players’ coins. Although the exact effects of it change, the general unifying factor of the Mega Mushroom across games is its ability to make the player grow. That ability is so good, even the super mushroom utilizes it in games where the player does not have a smaller form, such as Super Mario 64 DS and the Super Smash Bros. series.
1 Invincibility Mushroom
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
In the exciting world of Mario, the top-tier mushroom surprisingly hails from an alternate title – “Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.” It’s intriguing, isn’t it? And speaking of surprises, some power-ups in Mario games can make things seem a tad unfair. They grant extraordinary abilities that, let’s be honest, border on cheating. Newer installments have been known to provide players with permanent invulnerability options when they persistently struggle with certain levels. The Invincibility Mushroom is just one example of these power-ups.
In simpler terms, this rainbow mushroom eliminates any enemy the player touches during an entire level. While some players might consider this power-up an unfair advantage within the game, it remains the most advantageous mushroom across the entire Mario franchise.
