Key Takeaways
- Storm lacks power due to slow movement and low damage output, making her an unlikely pick in Marvel Rivals.
- Namor excels as a turret character but struggles in combat.
- Psylocke, a high-difficulty character, offers great mobility and precise damage, capable of dismantling enemy teams.
As someone who’s spent countless hours battling it out in the vibrant world of Marvel Rivals, I’ve seen my fair share of superheroes and villains showcasing their unique abilities. However, there are a few characters that truly stand out from the crowd, and today, I’d like to highlight some of the ones that have caught my attention.
Just as the Avengers stand out as legendary characters within the Marvel universe, so too do the X-Men, boasting a distinctive mix of talents, temperaments, and gripping narratives. These mutant individuals, along with their foes, make an indelible mark in Marvel Rivals, adding some exceptional personalities to the team whose abilities mirror those seen in the comics.
As players adapt to these powerful mutants, their potential to dominate matches becomes increasingly apparent. Whether they’re disrupting enemies with crowd control or delivering decisive blows, each mutant has a distinct role that can shift the tide of any confrontation. That being said, some are definitely more effective than others, and for players looking to be at the best of their game, it’s important to know which mutant has a better chance of winning their next match.
6. Storm
Lightning Without The Thunder
- Class: Duelist
- Difficulty: 3/5
- First Appearance: Giant-Size X-Men #1 (1975)
Although Storm is categorized as a Duelist, she brings significant buffs to her team, making her more of a Strategist might make her more appealing. However, in her current form, she’s not typically chosen. She’s not entirely negative, as her ultimate ability transforms her into a whirling tornado that harms both enemies and terrain, but otherwise, she’s relatively weak.
The main issues with her performance stem from her mobility and attack power. She moves slowly and relies on aerial combat, but unfortunately, she doesn’t inflict much damage. This means if she engages in battle, she’ll likely be taken down before she can take down the opponents. However, she might find a niche in a strategically organized team that can effectively utilize her mobility and power-ups, though her numerous drawbacks make it questionable.
5. Namor
Like A Fish Out Of Water
- Class: Duelist
- Difficulty: 2/5
- First Appearance: Marvel Comics #1 (1939)
In most hero shooter games, there’s a character resembling a turret. In the case of Marvel Rivals, it’s Namor who offers two Monstro octopi as his turrets. They inflict damage from afar and when Namor strikes an opponent with Wrath Of The Seven Seas, these enemies will prioritize them instead, attacking more frequently. However, the turrets don’t dish out a significant amount of damage. Still, they can provide some strategic advantage in defending objectives as they divert enemy fire away from you.
Beyond his towers, Namor performs optimally on the periphery of battles since his regular attack involves throwing a Trident, dealing reasonable damage from afar. This trait aligns well with a defensive gameplay approach, but if he encounters an enemy who flanks him, he can become isolated rather quickly. Regrettably, even his Ultimate ability is somewhat underwhelming; unless enemies are right in the center of its range, they won’t suffer full damage.
4. Wolverine
Lacks That Cutting Edge
- Class: Duelist
- Difficulty: 3/5
- First Appearance: The Incredible Hulk #181 (1974)
Wolverine, a frequently favored mutant character, excels in close-combat dueling but requires skill to fully master. His abilities primarily focus on building Rage, a resource that increases the speed and power of his attacks when accumulated. This Rage is gained through both dealing and receiving damage, so it’s crucial for Wolverine to actively engage in battles as much as possible.
That can be fairly tough, though; with his base melee range and damage, he can often get eliminated by superior ranged characters before he’s had a chance to cement himself in the battle. In the right hands, Wolverine has the potential to be a serious threat, especially when his Rage has been maximized, but it’s hard to recommend playing him when there are quite simply better melee options in the current roster.
3. Magik
Master Of The Dark Arts
- Class: Duelist
- Difficulty: 3/5
- First Appearance: Giant-Sized X-Men (1975)
In Marvel Rivals, Magik boasts an assorted repertoire of moves and powers centered around her Soulsword, a substantial weapon. This tool can be utilized to strike either a single adversary or a cluster of them, making it versatile in combat. However, the drawback lies in its relatively slow attack speed. Yet, the ability to harm multiple enemies simultaneously serves as an effective compensation for this shortcoming.
Magik doesn’t just rely on her sword for combat; she also possesses Stepping Discs that enable her to teleport short distances. Once she steps out of these portals, she can employ various skills such as delivering a wide sweep with her sword or summoning a Limbo demon that assaults enemies in its path. Furthermore, her Team-Up ability shares these discs with Black Panther and Psylocke, enabling them to escape potentially lethal situations, making Magik an indispensable team player as well.
2. Magneto
Use Shields To Repel Projectiles
- Class: Vanguard
- Difficulty: 2/5
- First Appearance: The X-Men #1 (1963)
In the Marvel Rivals game, Magneto stands out not just as an exceptional mutant, but also as a top-tier Vanguard. He excels in both dealing damage and assisting his team, but it’s his supportive role that really sets him apart. He has the ability to erect a massive magnetic barrier in front of him, deflecting all incoming missiles; unlike other shields in the game, this one operates on a cooldown rather than a health meter, giving Magneto a distinctive defensive strategy (as long as the player handles the cooldown effectively).
For those not directly with him, Magneto has the ability to create protective barriers around himself and specific team members. The harm these barriers endure gets transferred to metallic bands on Magneto’s back, which then transform into a potent long-range attack. Furthermore, his Ultimate move is particularly effective in clearing objectives, as he launches an enormous iron meteor that inflicts massive damage when it strikes.
1. Psylocke
Ninja Capable Of Stealthy Flanks
- Class: Duelist
- Difficulty: 5/5
- First Appearance: Captain Britain #8 (1976)
Learning Psylocke could initially prove challenging, but a player who invests time in perfecting her moveset will eventually unlock one of the most formidable Duelists within the game. She excels at bypassing enemy frontlines using Psychic Stealth and launching surprise attacks on backlines with her Psionic Crossbow. The damage is swift and accurate, and every successful strike progressively decreases the cooldowns of her other abilities.
Her skills aren’t limited to her destructive capabilities; instead, they provide impressive agility that lets her move effortlessly across maps. Whether she’s charging into battle or stealthily evading it, a skilled Psylocke can dismantle an opponent team from within and significantly contribute to winning matches in Marvel Rivals.
