Summary
- Old Amber now crucial for Aerodactyl ex decks, repurposing its function in the META game.
- Mythical Slab considered valuable for its disruption and acceleration of Psychic Evolution.
- Pokemon Flute, despite limitations, stands out as the most effective disruptive Item Card.
As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of Pokemon Trading Card Game (PTCG) under my belt, I must say that the Mythical Island expansion has truly shaken things up! Among the new Item Cards, there are some real game-changers.
Following the launch of the Mythical Island expansion, three additional Item Cards have been added to the collection within Pokemon TCG Pocket, although it’s important to note that one of them was previously available in the Genetic Apex pack. Many players are curious as to whether these new Item Cards warrant the effort required to obtain them, and if any could potentially overtake the current META Trainer Cards in Pokemon Pocket. To assist players in making informed decisions, we have ranked each Item Card from the Mythical Island expansion. This should help players determine which card aligns best with their playstyle and priorities.
3. Old Amber
The Good Old Sabrina Counter with a New Twist
- Rarity: 2-Diamond
- Text: Play this card as if it were a 40-HP Basic Colorless Pokemon. At any time during your turn, you may discard this card from play. This card can’t retreat.
In the Genetic Apex expansion, Old Amber made its debut alongside seven other Item Cards. After the Mythical Island era, this Fossil Item Card was often employed either to thwart Sabrina or as a stand-in for evolution on the Bench in the Active Spot. However, an addition from the Mythical Island expansion may transform Old Amber’s gameplay: the Aerodactyl ex card.
In the latest expansion on Mythical Island, Aerodactyl EX boasts exceptional technological versatility. This Stage 1 Pokemon, which transforms from an Old Amber, has the ability to prevent your opponent’s current Pokemon from evolving. Effectively, the Mythical Island update has redefined Old Amber, making it a crucial component for building Aerodactyl EX decks. As Aerodactyl EX becomes increasingly popular in the game, players should be on the lookout for more Old Amber cards appearing on the battlefield and understand them as strategic markers, rather than merely preparations for Sabrina’s role.
Introducing Aerodactyl alongside a Fossil Item Card implies that we’ll see more Stage 1 Pokémon joining the game, as they can evolve from Helix, Dome, or Amber fossils.
2. Mythical Slab
A Niche Item Card That’s Perfect for Alakazam
- Rarity: 2-Diamond
- Text: Look at the top card of your deck. If that card is a Psychic-Type Pokemon, put it into your hand. If it is not a Psychic-Type Pokemon, put it on the bottom of your deck.
The recently introduced “Pokemon Pocket” Item Card, named Mythical Slab, has a design reminiscent of Oreos. It functions as a double-edged tool. On one side, it can expedite certain Evolutions within the game. Conversely, it carries the potential to alter the sequence in which cards are drawn, potentially disrupting the flow. Ideally, Mythical Slab assists in drawing a Psychic Pokemon, ideally the one you require for your strategy. However, if circumstances turn unfavorable, it might push non-Psychic cards such as Sabrina to the bottom of your deck, making their appearance less likely.
Typically, the randomness impact of this RNG-affected item would make it less favorable. But given the prevalence of Psychic cards like Mewtwo ex and Alakazam in the current game meta, Mythical Slab is considered one of the superior Item Cards from the Mythical Island expansion. The unpredictability can be reduced if your hand already holds crucial cards, and the risk of flipping the top card seems acceptable.
Regardless of Mythical Slab potentially influencing the drawing of additional cards, players must remember that the deck is regularly reshuffled during the game, thereby lessening the impact of the Slab’s unfavorable influence.
1. Pokemon Flute
An Excellent Disruption Card
- Rarity: 2-Diamond
- Text: Put a Basic Pokemon from your opponent’s discard pile onto their Bench.
The Pokemon Flute card retrieves a defeated enemy card from the discard pile and places it on your opponent’s field (Bench). This can be advantageous when your opponent is having trouble drawing the right cards and has empty spaces on their field. For example, if their weakest Pokémon is knocked out and only one remains in the active spot, the Pokemon Flute allows you to move the weaker Pokémon to the Bench. After that, you can use a Sabrina card to send the revived Pokémon back to the active spot, making it easier for you to defeat it again.
On the flip side, there are some drawbacks to using the Pokemon Flute: Firstly, due to the presence of existing META Item Cards, finding room for it can be challenging. Secondly, it only functions when your opponent has at least one empty Bench space and one Basic Pokemon in their discard pile. If your opponent consistently fills their Bench, Pokemon Flute becomes essentially useless. Nevertheless, Pokemon Flute is exceptional among Item Cards in the Mythical Island pack, offering a greater potential for disruptive play compared to cards like Red Card.
