Best Open-World Games For Feeling Like A God

Open-world games are incredibly popular today, with new major titles appearing almost every month. Though they can sometimes be demanding, it’s easy to see why – they come in all sorts of styles. Some games aim for realism, while others let you become incredibly powerful. When a game strikes that balance well, there’s nothing quite like feeling completely unstoppable and like a god within its world.

In many new games, you’ll experience incredible power – doing things that are impossible in the real world. You can defeat entire armies on your own, even overcome gods, and move with superhuman abilities. You’ll easily crush your enemies, enjoying their desperate attempts to fight back. These games let you play as incredibly powerful characters, and they’re a lot of fun!

I’m only including truly open-world games here – no titles that feel open but are really guided experiences like God of War Ragnarök or Borderlands. What I really wanted was games where you instantly feel super powerful, like a god, just by moving around. That’s why I didn’t put Cyberpunk 2077 or even Skyrim in the main list – you usually need to grind for specific gear or skills to feel truly powerful in those. They’re still awesome games though, so I’ve included them in the honorable mentions section.

Honorable Mentions: Other Great Open-World Games That Make You Feel OP

A lot of open-world games let you become incredibly powerful with enough effort. Plus, many games include characters with amazing abilities that can make you feel all-powerful.

  • Cyberpunk 2077 – This one depends entirely on your build, as V is only as strong as you ultimately make him. While you could end up not being absurdly powerful, quite a few paths lead down that road, especially if you double down on cyberware.
  • Skyrim (and other Elder Scrolls games) – Another RPG that gives you all the tools to be as powerful as you want, and you can get there pretty quickly by focusing on Conjuration or even Archery.
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man – Well, they make you feel like Spider-Man. Still, the movement is so good, it is god-like.
  • Batman Arkham Trilogy – While perhaps falling short of godhood, Batman is very much superhuman in these games.
  • The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction – Pure Hulk goodness. Destroy everything and use cars as boxing gloves.
  • Elden Ring – Due to being way harder than C2077 and Skyrim, Elden Ring does its best to avoid making you feel too OP early on. However, you can definitely create builds that demolish most bosses, at least in the base game.
  • Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning – The base game is not particularly difficult, and the combat is so stylish that you really do feel like a god. It is also not that difficult to craft overpowered gear.
  • Forspoken – Takes a while to get there, but Forspoken‘s movement and magic systems are empowering.
  • Dragon’s Dogma 2 – You will become OP before you know it. Magick Archer and Mystic Spearhand are particularly powerful.
  • Dying Light 2 – Well, a parkour god.
  • Goat Simulator 3 – Break the world as you see fit.
  • Two Worlds II – You can really go ham with the spells.

8. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (Although Origins And Valhalla Are Good Picks Too)

Be Part Of History & Mythology

Ubisoft’s open-world games often let you play as a remarkably powerful character, capable of defeating large groups of enemies with ease. The Assassin’s Creed series is especially known for this, letting players feel like an overwhelmingly skilled and deadly hero. Games like Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla add elements of mythology, making the experience feel more like playing through a grand legend than a realistic story.

The game Odyssey, set in Ancient Greece, vividly recreates the era with both historical detail and fantastical elements, blurring the line between reality and myth. While it takes some time to master all her abilities, the protagonist Kassandra becomes incredibly powerful in combat, easily defeating both people and even mythical creatures that seem far beyond her strength.

Honorable mentions to Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Immortals Fenyx Rising.

7. Driver: San Francisco

Shift Turns Players Into Driving Gods

Sometimes, it’s good to abandon traditional thinking. The game Driver: San Francisco took the series in a wildly unexpected direction, but this risk actually resulted in what many consider to be the best installment. Suddenly, the protagonist, Tanner, can take control of any driver, letting him instantly switch between vehicles.

Even though it’s a standard open-world driving game in many ways, the unique ability to instantly switch between vehicles feels incredibly powerful and fun, like having a god-like perspective. Despite sounding strange at first, Driver: San Francisco fully embraces this concept, making it a game that still holds up and is a joy to play today.

While Watch Dogs: Legion shares a similar idea to Driver: San Francisco, it doesn’t execute it quite as well.

6. Middle-earth: Shadow Of Mordor & War

Spread Terror Across The Battlefield

While many stories set in the world of The Lord of the Rings focus on characters with weaknesses, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and War let you become incredibly powerful. As you upgrade Talion and Celebrimbor’s skills, you’ll gain a huge range of abilities, making the games a satisfying power fantasy both during and outside of battles.

Talion is a powerful character with incredible physical abilities and the power to control his enemies, making them fight for him. He’s also incredibly intimidating, often causing orcs to flee in fear. If you enjoy open-world games and want to play as a powerful, vengeful being, these two games are worth exploring.

5. Crackdown (All)

Run, Jump, & Destroy

Crackdown’s gameplay is built around consistently feeling more powerful. As you play, your character gets stronger by completing missions and collecting items, quickly evolving from a skilled soldier into a superhuman capable of incredible feats – like leaping over buildings, throwing vehicles, and withstanding heavy damage. You start off strong, but become truly formidable in just a few hours.

Each of these games offers something fun, but the very first one remains the best. The second game, Crackdown 2, made some changes that actually made it less exciting for causing mayhem, and the third game is closer in style to the original.

4. Just Cause (All, But Mainly 2 & 3)

The God Of Destruction

The Just Cause series, created by Avalanche Studios, is famous for its over-the-top action and massive destruction. Players take on the role of Rico Rodriguez, a secret agent sent to liberate islands from oppressive dictators – and the best way to do that is by causing chaos. Though he’s just a man, Rico feels like an invincible action hero from the 1980s, capable of taking on an entire country’s army. He’s dangerous on the ground, but truly shines when delivering explosive mayhem from above using vehicles like helicopters, especially in the third and fourth games.

While all four Just Cause games are fun to play, many fans consider Just Cause 2 and 3 to be the best. Just Cause 3 especially stands out for its consistently over-the-top and satisfying destruction.

3. Prototype 1 & 2

Shapeshifting Gods

The Prototype games are quick and exciting open-world adventures starring characters who aren’t quite heroes, and aren’t quite villains. Both Alex Mercer and James Heller, the protagonists of the first and second games respectively, were created through genetic engineering to be super-human. They possess incredible powers, including the ability to shapeshift into other people, absorb health from enemies, and turn their bodies into weapons. Even their basic abilities, like scaling buildings in seconds, are remarkably powerful.

Beyond a few minor story points, Prototype focuses on fast-paced, intense action. Both the main storylines rarely offer a chance to slow down or explore the environments peacefully. The game also effectively portrays Alex and James as powerful and intimidating characters, and this feeling is reflected in how you play.

Despite the main characters being incredibly powerful, the Prototype games still present a real challenge, which can sometimes lessen the impact of their seemingly limitless abilities.

2. Saints Row 4

From Gang Leader To President And, Eventually, God

Saints Row 4 is so over-the-top that it’s almost ridiculous. The game has strayed far from the series’ more realistic beginnings, turning the player, as the leader of the 3rd Street Saints, into the President of the United States and then throwing in an alien invasion. Most of the game takes place within a computer simulation of the city, Steelport. Driving cars is possible, but quickly becomes unnecessary because players soon unlock ‘Super Sprint,’ one of nine superpowers that makes the player character incredibly powerful – easily on par with famous superheroes from Marvel and DC comics.

If you’re looking for a realistic gangland experience like GTA, Saints Row 4 won’t deliver. But if you want an open-world game where you feel incredibly powerful, this one is among the best, largely because it’s easy to pick up and play.

1. Infamous (All)

The Best Open-World Games To Feel Like A God (Both Good And Evil)

Sucker Punch Productions is no longer developing Infamous games, but the series remains popular thanks to memories and services like PlayStation Plus. Though the stories sometimes spark debate, Infamous games are known for their fantastic power systems. These powers are exciting, adaptable, and quickly become intuitive to use. Whether players choose to be a hero or villain, they unlock impressive abilities – particularly Cole’s control over electricity in the original PlayStation 3 games – that look and feel amazing.

The Infamous games, especially the first two, offer a similar experience to what many fans imagine a free-roaming Thor game would be like – and we probably won’t see anything closer anytime soon. While Second Son isn’t as popular as the games starring Cole MacGrath, Delsin Rowe’s abilities are just as powerful and exciting.
