Summary
- Open-world games offer a variety of magical abilities for creative fun and exploration as a wizard.
- Elden Ring offers an Astrologer class that has Wizard-like abilities in a Soulslike experience.
- Diablo 4 continues the legacy that started with the original Wizard.
Magic is a classic part of fantasy video games, and playing as a wizard is a popular choice. It lets players feel like powerful characters from stories like *The Lord of the Rings*, exploring large worlds and defeating enemies with spells like lightning and ice.
I love getting lost in open-world fantasy games, especially MMOs and action RPGs! It’s so cool to finally get to live out those power fantasies – you know, being able to cast spells and wield awesome magical weapons. I always enjoy creating my perfect wizard character and just becoming super powerful. A big part of the fun is leveling up and getting stronger, eventually feeling like a total magical god!
8. World of Warcraft
Still the King of MMORPGs After Twenty Years
Lots of online role-playing games have come and gone with different degrees of popularity, but nearly all of them have been shaped by *World of Warcraft*. Launched over twenty years ago, it continues to be successful, offering players a vast world called Azeroth to explore and customize their characters, even those focused on magic, whether playing alone or with friends.
The Mage class in World of Warcraft is the game’s version of a classic Wizard. With gear like a staff, players can fully realize that fantasy. No matter what race you choose – Orc, Human, Draenei, or another – Mages cast impressive spells with unique effects. These spells aren’t just visually stunning; they’re powerful enough to defeat even the most dangerous enemies, including demons, undead, and Void Lords.
7. Avowed
Obsidian Entertainment Made Their Own World of Swords and Magic
Avowed, the new fantasy RPG from Obsidian Entertainment, takes place in the world of Eora. Like their sci-fi game, The Outer Worlds, it lets you explore a vast world, complete quests, and experience a grand story full of unique places and both good and evil magic. Though not completely open-world, Avowed features large, explorable areas that offer a focused, yet expansive, experience.
I’m really excited about the Wizard class in *Avowed*. Basically, you get to be a classic mage – think throwing lightning, summoning magical staffs, and, of course, fireballs! It’s not exactly something we haven’t seen before, but if you’re like me and love playing a magic-user, this looks awesome. What’s really cool is they’re giving us a lot of choices when it comes to light and dark magic – way more than a lot of other games I’ve played.
6. Elden Ring
If Dark Souls Was Set in a Massive Open World
Although Elden Ring doesn’t have a traditional Wizard or Mage class, the Astrologer is designed for players who enjoy magic. They excel in Intelligence, Dexterity, and Mind, and begin the game with a staff. Because of this, players can customize the Astrologer to act as many different types of magic users, effectively filling the role of a classic Wizard or sorcerer.
In Elden Ring, players can choose from many different classes, including the Astrologer. This game takes the challenging RPG style of FromSoftware’s previous titles like Bloodborne and Dark Souls and places it in a vast, open world. While the game is still full of tough boss battles, magic can be a powerful tool, helping players overcome challenges that melee-focused characters might find difficult – even the strongest bosses can be vulnerable to spells, particularly Comet Azur.
5. Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning
The Remaster of an Overshadowed Gem
When *Skyrim* was dominating the gaming world, *Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning* didn’t get as much attention, even though critics generally liked it and said it was a really enjoyable RPG. It offered a huge world to explore, packed with quests and a rich backstory, and eventually earned a remastered version called *Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning*.
Like *Avowed*, *Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning* doesn’t really break new ground, but it’s enjoyable to create characters that combine magic and weapons. By choosing the right upgrades, even a basic warrior can become incredibly powerful and defeat tough enemies like giants and evil wizards.
4. Hogwarts Legacy
The Definitive Game Set in the Wizarding World
Avalanche Games turned heads with the release of Hogwarts Legacy, a game that lets Harry Potter fans finally live out their fantasy of attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Players create their own wizard or witch and embark on a new story set 100 years before the adventures of Harry Potter and Voldemort.
As you progress through school, you’ll learn new spells to use both in the main story and while exploring the expansive open world filled with dark wizards and magical creatures. From classic spells like Expelliarmus to the powerful Unforgivable Curses, you’ll have a wide range of magical abilities to help you advance and discover the secrets of Hogwarts and the surrounding Scottish Highlands.
3. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim
The Dragonborn Can Be a Powerful Magic Wielder
In The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, players aren’t locked into specific roles; a unique system lets you build any character you want. Magic is incredibly versatile, offering options like healing, dealing elemental damage, or summoning creatures. This freedom, along with the game’s many quests and stories, makes each time you play feel new and exciting, and has cemented Skyrim’s place as a legendary RPG.
You can play as a powerful magic-user in a few different ways – mastering spells with your hands like a mage, or using more traditional tools like staffs and robes. Whether you’re facing off against a dragon or exploring a bandit-filled dungeon, casting spells is always rewarding, and even more so when combined with the unique power of Dragon Shouts, which are another type of magical ability.
2. Dragon’s Dogma 2
Vocations Can Turn a Mage into a Sorcerer
Beyond its beautiful graphics, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is quickly becoming a standout RPG for fans of high fantasy. It features epic monster battles, an engaging story, and exciting magic. Players can start as a Mage, but the unique vocation system allows them to evolve into a powerful Sorcerer, adding depth and variety to the gameplay.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a fun and engaging RPG, even with a few flaws. It builds on the original Dragon’s Dogma, refining its gameplay. While battling massive creatures like dragons can seem daunting at first, the Sorcerer class offers a powerful ranged playstyle. Sorcerers can unleash devastating attacks like tornadoes and lightning, while your AI companions, called Pawns, bravely fight enemies up close.
1. Diablo 4
Spellcasting Has Been a Staple of the Franchise
The *Diablo* series from Blizzard Entertainment revolutionized action RPGs, and *Diablo 4* builds on that success by introducing a vast, open world. Players can explore different regions seamlessly – without any loading screens – and encounter unique challenges and enemies as they create their own customized character.
Diablo 4 offers a highly detailed and immersive experience, starting with extensive character customization and six distinct classes to choose from: Barbarian, Sorcerer, Rogue, Necromancer, Druid, and Spiritborn. The Sorcerer class builds upon the classic Wizard from the original Diablo, letting players cast a wide variety of spells – from summoning multi-headed hydras to transforming into a devastating blizzard. At its core, Diablo 4 is about battling massive groups of enemies, and the Sorcerer excels at this, relentlessly cutting through demons with powerful magic.
