Many players enjoy feeling powerful and like they have agency in video games, which is a major reason why open-world games are so appealing. These games give players a sense of control through choices – from what they say to where they explore, even allowing them to climb or go in any direction they want.
Many open-world games immediately make players feel powerful, or quickly allow them to become stronger. Recent titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and older favorites such as Crackdown deliver on this desire, offering exciting power fantasies across a wide range of game types.

Donkey Kong Bananza
It’s A Jungle Out There
In Donkey Kong Bananza, players will feel completely in command as they unleash Donkey Kong’s incredible strength. Unlike games like Minecraft where you can tear down the environment, Donkey Kong’s punches are powerful and precise, acting like strong drills.
The game features battles, including boss fights, but they’re generally not very challenging until the very end. This is the first Donkey Kong game that really shows players how incredibly strong Donkey Kong is, even before you factor in his various transformations.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Going Full Venom
Okay, so Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 feels like the end of this story for me and Miles, at least for now, as we’re both swinging around as Spider-Man. We were already pretty awesome in our own games – super agile, fast, and strong when fighting and just getting around the city. But honestly, Peter feels even more powerful in this one. He’s really leveled up!
The game’s story brings in the Venom symbiote, revisiting some known elements while also offering unexpected twists to make players feel incredibly powerful. However, Miles isn’t overshadowed; he gains his own new abilities and tools – like invisibility and electric powers – which put him on par with Peter Parker.
Diablo 4
Strong Alone, Unstoppable In A Party
In Diablo 4, every character class feels incredibly powerful. Whether you’re a Rogue setting traps and using poisons, or a Sorcerer unleashing devastating spells, you’ll feel like a force to be reckoned with. Diablo games are best enjoyed with friends, as the world and dungeons can throw a lot of enemies your way, though it’s still possible to play solo.
How players build their characters determines the best skills to learn. If you prefer playing solo, focus on skills that affect a wide area. For group play, skills that help and support your teammates are more valuable.
Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain
Non-Lethal Power
The Metal Gear series lets players feel powerful and stealthy, but how you play greatly affects your success. For instance, rushing into Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain with even the best weapons will probably lead to failure.
Okay, so one thing you gotta watch out for is enemy bases – they’ll often call for backup if you mess with them. But if I play smart and go stealthy, using non-lethal attacks, I can really feel like I’m in charge. And here’s the cool part: instead of killing enemies, I can knock them out, drag them back to my base, and actually recruit them! That makes my stronghold way stronger, which is awesome.
Batman: Arkham City
Beat Down In Gotham
The original Arkham game made Batman feel somewhat vulnerable, requiring players to primarily use stealth to defeat enemies. Batman: Arkham City improves on this by making Batman much more durable – he can take more damage, making him a stronger and more resilient hero.
Whether players are gliding through the air or fighting groups of enemies, they’ll truly feel like the powerful Batman. It’s important for a superhero game that Batman feels strong, and Rocksteady Studios has delivered on that front.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Two Heroes, Double The Power
In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, players can experience the game from two different perspectives. You’ll start with Naoe, a skilled ninja who excels at stealth and quick takedowns. Then there’s Yasuke, a powerful samurai who relies on brute strength to overwhelm his opponents.
This character is great for attacking large bases, particularly if you need to force open doors. While Naoe excels at nighttime raids, the game offers players plenty of flexibility in how they combine ninja and samurai tactics in its open world.
Palworld
Pokemon Builders
Palworld takes a little time to get the hang of because it blends several game types – survival, monster-collecting, and life simulation. You’ll begin by gathering basic resources, then use those materials to craft weapons and tools for battling and catching Pals.
Catching more Pals makes you a better player, unlocking new ways to enjoy the game. Pals aren’t just companions; they help you build and run bases, can even take you flying, and can be used strategically in battles – some, like Foxparks, can act as powerful flamethrowers.
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim
No One Can Beat A Dragon
As a huge fan, I’m so excited for Skyrim! From what I’ve heard, it’s going to let you become incredibly powerful – more so than any other Elder Scrolls game. It sounds like getting awesome weapons and learning new spells won’t be too difficult, which is great because I want to spend more time exploring and less time grinding!
A really neat thing you can do is cast the same spell with both hands, combining them for a stronger effect. Between all the different ways to improve your character, make powerful items, and unlock dragon abilities, you’ll genuinely feel like a godlike being.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot
For All The Ballz
Goku is known as one of anime’s most powerful characters, and Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot lets players experience that strength firsthand. The game retells the biggest storylines from Dragon Ball Z, beginning with the arrival of the Saiyans and continuing through the Buu Saga, with additional stories added as downloadable content. While you can play as other powerful characters, Goku is at the center of most of the series’ most famous battles.
Regular enemies will be easily defeated by any of the game’s heroes, and the boss fights will capture the epic, over-the-top action of the anime, making for exciting and faithful video game adaptations.
Crackdown
Mario As A Super Soldier
Crackdown, a classic from the Xbox 360, is still enjoyable for some simple, over-the-top action. The story isn’t particularly memorable, but that wasn’t the main reason people played it.
The game focuses on battling gangs using firearms and gathering orbs to enhance your character’s abilities, letting them jump and move faster. By the finale, you’ll be incredibly agile, almost like an energized Mario after grabbing a Super Star. While collecting items requires some work, it’s worthwhile to become the best operative in Pacific City.
