In essence, open-world games appear to be crafted with an inherent flaw, leading players on a relatively standard progression. Initially, you’re a novice with no possessions, but ultimately transform into a powerful entity capable of obliterating divine adversaries with a single strike of your weapon. Despite the apparent challenge in open-world games such as Elden Ring, players can become overpowered if they are prepared to invest time and effort in refining their skills or level grinding. Games like Skyrim, Cyberpunk 2077, and Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning are renowned RPGs set in open worlds, but achieving godly stature requires dedication and perseverance.
Instead of building up power over time in open-world games, imagine a scenario where your character starts out with significant power and gradually becomes more potent as you progress. This way, you can indulge in a power fantasy without having to spend countless hours on quests or character development. When you’re seeking a release and want to wreak havoc, destroying nearly everyone effortlessly, these games offer the immediate feeling of power that makes gameplay more enjoyable.
To ensure a game is classified appropriately, it’s essential we clarify what we mean by “immediately”. In this context, a player should experience a sense of being significantly powerful within an hour of starting the campaign. While they may grow stronger as the narrative unfolds, they should feel empowered right from the beginning (or at most, following the tutorial and introductory section).
Also, the games are only loosely ranked by how quickly and how satisfyingly they make you feel OP.
8. Infamous 2
Ride The Lightning
In the past, Sucker Punch focused on creating superhero (or supervillain) stories rather than samurai tales. Interestingly, although Infamous and Ghost of Tsushima seem very different in many aspects, they both excel as open-world power fantasies. To clarify, the characters in Infamous possess significantly greater powers compared to Jin, and they also gain these abilities at a faster pace.
In a simpler and more conversational style: The first two games, Infamous: First Light and Infamous Second Son, take some time initially to establish their worlds and introduce their characters as they discover and master their unique powers. On the other hand, Infamous 2 jumps straight into the action, with Cole already possessing god-like thunder abilities from the get-go. While he does gain additional extraordinary powers in the second game, Cole begins with a powerful advantage, avoiding the need to start over like in previous games.
7. Destroy All Humans! 2 – Reprobed
An Old-School Open-World OP Game
To clarify, although I personally feel that the “Destroy All Humans” series doesn’t offer a genuinely open-world experience, it is labeled as an open-world game on platforms like Wikipedia and Steam. It appears that my perspective might be less common among others.
Originating from one of the veteran creators of chaos, “Destroy All Humans” embodies the quintessential essence of ’00s gaming, even though it’s clearly influenced by classic science fiction films from the 1950s and 1960s. Although Reprobed is a remake/remaster, its offbeat humor, straightforward gameplay structure, and open-world divided into independent maps hark back to the original game’s era, and this isn’t intended as a negative commentary.
You play as Crypto, an extraterrestrial invader, who’s far stronger than Earth’s humans. The game’s second part encounters some challenges, but what makes it special is Crypto’s overpowering abilities. He can easily vaporize humans and destroy almost any structure he chooses. From the start, you are almost indestructible, and this remains true as the game progresses.
6. Saints Row 4
Embracing Absurdity And Saying Goodbye To Its GTA Clone Routes
One time, the Saints found themselves ensnared within a virtual reality, where their leader transformed into a supreme superhero figure…essentially, the most entertaining installment in the Saints Row series, often referred to as Saints Row 4. Although the franchise has always carried a humorous undertone, Saints Row 4 escalated things to the level of absurd satire, a move that some believe rendered the original storyline inconclusive. Nonetheless, viewed independently, Saints Row 4 is merely an unrestrained adventure that plunges players into a chaotic Steelport and encourages them to let loose with wild abandon.
Soon enough, you’ll acquire extraordinary speed, strength, telepathic powers, and various other abilities, along with a variety of potent (and amusing) weaponry at your disposal. You can enhance all aspects for increased power, but in its basic form, you possess the ability to manipulate physical laws as you see fit.
From the outset, your character serves as the President of the United States, a position that holds immense power apart from any superhuman abilities.
5. Just Cause 3
Rico Destroys A Whole Island…Without Breaking Any Real Sweat
In simpler terms, taking on an island’s powerful dictator and causing destruction to his cherished possessions would seem impossible for most people, but for Rico Rodriguez, it’s just a typical day. Essentially, the Just Cause series gives you a sense of being overly powerful right from the start, but Just Cause 3 offers an ideal blend of exciting over-the-top action, random mayhem, enjoyable exploration methods, and B-movie style storytelling.
Despite initially launching with numerous problems, the issues were mostly addressed over time, resulting in a sequel that significantly outshines its predecessor in virtually every aspect. After completing the initial tutorial or introduction, _Just Cause 3_ allows Rico to run rampant, and his main objective is unremitting destruction. In no time, you’ll find yourself demolishing buildings, while also utilizing a grappling hook and wingsuit combination to glide through the skies.
4. Goat Simulator 3
The Ultimate Open-World Breaker
In considering whether to discuss this game, I hesitated due to the distinct nature of “Goat Simulator 3.” Its version of ‘overpowered’ seems unique from other games.
You’re an unstoppable force of chaos, capable of throwing reality off balance. A sizable city seems more like a playground for your relentless creativity, and there’s nothing anyone can do to contain the indestructible anomaly that you are. Indeed, you appear to be virtually immortal from the start, making ‘overpowering’ an understatement.
3. Megaton Rainfall
An OP MC VR Open-World Game
Experience the thrill of being an extraordinary superhero! In the immersive world of VR, you can become a superhero who leaves even some versions of Superman in the dust – that’s what Megaton Rainfall offers. Its grandeur was simply mind-blowing when it first came out in 2017. This game doesn’t just let you traverse a few remarkably lifelike cities on Earth, but also takes you soaring into space to uncover the mysteries of the cosmos. Frankly, it’s amazing that such capabilities were nearly within reach a decade ago!
In simpler terms, Megaton Rainfall’s main focus isn’t its exceptional combat or captivating storyline. Instead, it revolves around battling faceless aliens who are wreaking havoc on Earth. Your mission is to save humanity, but the game encourages you to destroy the very structures and lives you aim to preserve, providing an unexpected sense of satisfaction. Interestingly, as soon as you enter the game world, you possess an overpowering strength that allows you to shatter any power balance.
2. Batman: Arkham City & Knight
A Mortal God-Like Figure
Batman is like a real-life legend who haunts the city of Gotham. He’s a living terror for its most dangerous criminals, many of whom possess significant power. Despite being just an ordinary human, Batman manages to instill fear in others as he fights for justice.
In both “Arkham City” and “Arkham Knight”, an experienced Bruce Wayne is portrayed who confidently assumes the role of The Dark Knight. These games allow players to jump right into the character’s full glory, featuring an easy-to-use and fluid combat system that enables you to effortlessly overpower a gang of thugs with minimal effort, even taking down formidable adversaries like Bane. As the story unfolds, Batman acquires new gadgets that enhance his core abilities, but he is uniquely powerful from the get-go, distinguishing him from the start.
1. Prototype
Created In A Lab To Be OP
Oh, absolutely! That’s how you play an open-world game like Prototype. This game introduces Alex Mercer, a character engineered with traits resembling Venom, the Hulk, and Mystique, which on paper sounds utterly absurd and in action is even more ludicrous. The story is initially set up in a brief introduction, after which Alex is released onto Manhattan, leaving both the city and military completely unprepared for a being capable of throwing cars, scaling buildings with ease, and transforming body parts into weapons.
As Alex’s power significantly increases as Prototype progresses, thanks to a thoughtfully designed advancement system that gradually unveils new arm transformations and Devastator attacks over time. Notably, his initial strength surpasses many characters’ final forms, leading him to face weaker foes in the early stages of the game who hardly pose a challenge.
Prototype 2 also qualifies and is great, but I have a softer spot for the original game.
