As someone who’s spent countless hours watching anime openings, I must say that these visual masterpieces have left me absolutely spellbound! The opening for Blue Lock Season 2 is a true work of art, with its innovative use of ‘aura’ and experimental animation techniques. It’s like a breath of fresh air in an otherwise lackluster season, much like how Unison Square Garden’s Boujaku No Charisma breathes life into the series.
There truly is an ‘art’ to anime openings. By definition, these openings are art, but there’s also an ‘art’ to making a good opening. Sure, the production studio can get the rights to a catchy song, but if the visuals aren’t interesting in any way people aren’t going to care.
Conversely, if a catchy tune isn’t present, then the initial appearance doesn’t matter much. The magic lies in matching the appropriate song with the visuals perfectly, resulting in a final product that leaves a lasting impression and is greater than its individual parts. Among the Fall 2024 anime season releases, some of them excel at combining these elements harmoniously.
10 Dandadan
Otonoke by Creepy Nuts
Kicking off with undeniably the standout anime opening of the season, “Otonoke” by Creepy Nuts. While they have created several openings in the past, their most recognized one prior to this was for Mashle Season 2. The distinctive sound that Creepy Nuts produce is one of the reasons they were an ideal choice for the theme song of Dandadan. This series, Dandadan, possesses a unique and unapologetically ‘odd’ essence at its heart.
By the second episode, the protagonists face alien attacks, a teenager experiences a supernatural incident where a ghost takes his private parts, later becoming possessed by this ghost whose curse is restrained by another student (Momo Ayase). Meanwhile, Otonoke stands out visually as an opening theme, proving to be highly contagious, stunningly beautiful at certain points, and an enjoyable tune throughout.
9 Blue Box
Sam Blue by Official Hige Dandism
Coming up next is one of the standout openings from one of the top shows of the season, “Blue Box”. This delightful romance series revolves around high-school relationships, personal aspirations, and much more. With its mature themes hidden beneath a playful exterior, “Blue Box” offers an intriguing contrast. The opening theme by Official Hige Dandism perfectly encapsulates this unique blend.
If you find the melody in this opening theme seems reminiscent, you may recognize it as the work of Official Hige Dandism who has created other popular OPs, like “Cry Baby” for “Tokyo Revengers”. Regardless, the opening theme for “Blue Box” is visually and auditorily impressive with each frame bursting with detail and every second of the music resonating powerfully. In summary, an exceptional opening theme for a highly anticipated manga-to-anime adaptation.
8 Ranma 1/2
Iinazukkyun by Ano
Coming next is an undeniable classic, or more accurately, a contemporary reinterpretation of a true classic. The upcoming series Ranma 1/2 (2024) serves as a complete remake of the renowned anime series that either marked our childhood or was one of our gateways into the vast world of anime.
In its fresh, contemporary incarnation, the OP titled “Iinazukkyun” by Ano skillfully blends contemporary aesthetics with nods to the original series. Moreover, the tune is incredibly infectious and has earned a spot on this list due to its creative visuals that resemble a storybook or collage-style renditions of characters, as well as its lively and engaging music.
7 Orb On The Movements of the Earth
Kaijuu by Sakanaction
Next up is a proposal for an unusual introduction to a series titled “Orb: Earth’s Motion“. This series comes with significant plot twists that could potentially spoil a lot, so we’ll keep the discussion light. However, be aware that it’s going to tug at your heartstrings. Moreover, the opening alone is powerful enough to evoke emotions in almost everyone who listens to it, even without fully knowing the characters yet.
In the anime ‘Kaijuu’, the piano melodies are stunningly beautiful yet expertly positioned to maintain tension throughout, undoubtedly a deliberate choice. Also, be aware that the opening scene alters (visually) as the series unfolds, so pay close attention for those changes without giving away any spoilers.
6 Mecha-Ude: Mechanical Arms
Vortex by Setsuko
The intro for “Mecha-Ude: Mechanical Arms” is exceptionally cozy, a typical shonen-style sequence that introduces all the main characters, their skills, mechanical arms, and hints at their personalities through their poses or actions. Yet, Setsuko’s performance in the OP song “Vortex” elevates this introduction to new heights.
Initially, one might assume this show is simply about a child wielding an extraordinary alien mechanical arm for combat purposes. However, upon listening to “Vortex” and observing the opening credits, it seems far more philosophical and contemplative than expected. Despite the outlandish nature of Mecha-Ude’s premise, the OP effectively stirs profound emotions, demonstrating its ability to transcend the ordinary despite the extraordinary concept.
5 As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I’ll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World (2nd Season)
Skill Awake by Passcode
As a devoted fan, I must confess, it’s hard to defend the idea that a reincarnation isekai series starring a man transformed into a noble with the power to see everyone’s stats should be taken at face value as profound or thought-provoking. However, what this show lacks in deep philosophical depth, it more than makes up for in pure entertainment value.
Moreover, being a Reincarnated Aristocrat offers additional appeal, particularly its openings. Not only was the opening theme song for the initial season of this anime adaptation a fantastic tune, but the opening theme for the second season (known as “Skill Awake”) is equally addictive.
4 A Herbivorous Dragon of 5,000 Years Gets Unfairly Villainized (2nd Season)
Brave One by Fukurow Note
The following sequence, surprisingly, takes a serious turn in what essentially is a humorous TV series. This scene, appearing in the second season of the show, shares a distinctive artistic approach similar to that of “As a Reincarnated Aristocrat“.
The opening visuals are not just attention-grabbing, they’re truly outstanding, with the letterboxing technique and certain elements that remain unaffected by it, being particularly impressive. Moreover, the song used in the opening perfectly harmonizes with these captivating visuals. Despite this being primarily a comedy series, it occasionally features powerful opening themes.
3 Blue Lock (2nd Season)
Boujaku No Charisma by Unison Square Garden
It appears that Blue Lock is receiving criticism for certain choices made during its second season. Some viewers have commented that the animation in certain episodes resembles a PowerPoint presentation, with images seemingly moving across the screen. Regardless of personal opinions on this issue, it’s hard to deny that the level of high-quality animation seems to have significantly decreased in the second season of this popular sports series.
In a striking turn of events, the opening sequence for this anime is remarkably powerful, showcasing an exceptional level of creativity in visuals. Each striker in the intro seems to possess their unique ‘aura,’ which adds an extra layer of coolness to the experience. The team behind the visuals wasn’t shy about experimenting with various effects, making each scene a visual delight. To top it off, the song by Unison Square Garden (a renowned band) complements the energetic pace of Blue Lock perfectly.
2 Yakuza Fiance
Under and Over by The Oral Cigarettes
Following that, we have another captivating premiere titled “Under and Over” by The Oral Cigarettes, for the engaging romantic series “Yakuza Fiance“. This show delves into a world filled with complex characters, petty retaliation, intense passion, and much more. It’s a blend of comedy, romance, everyday life experiences, and is guaranteed to provide an entertaining 100% watch!
Although the series initially appears rather light-hearted and comedic during its early episodes, the opening theme is remarkably intense. To put it bluntly, many shows shy away from portraying such passionate moments as shown in this opening sequence, even for their dramatic climaxes.
1 You Are Ms. Servant
Otozure by Tricot
And last up is the opening for a little series called You Are Ms. Servant. This is another one that’s so incredibly inventive visually and so incredibly pleasing to listen to with regard to the audio. However, this anime has to take the cake overall in terms of experimental visuals, even compared to all the other fantastic openings on this list.
This artwork in the opening sequence seems almost like a creative masterpiece that a college art student might produce, it’s so unique (and we mean this as a huge compliment). Combine these striking visuals with the relaxing and addictive melodies of Tricot, and you have all the ingredients for an incredibly impactful opening.
