As someone who’s spent countless hours battling it out in Overwatch, I can confidently say that the Classic mode has brought back some of the most exhilarating and chaotic times I’ve had with this game. The return of Scatter Arrow for Hanzo is like opening a time capsule to the good old days, but with a twist of modern gaming experience.
In the thrilling world of Overwatch 2’s Classic mode, I, as a gamer, am spoiled for choice with 12 original DPS Heroes at my disposal. That’s a decrease from the current 18 (with Symmetra taking on a Support role in Classic), but the variety is still more than enough to keep things engaging. Interestingly, these 12 are divided evenly between defense and offense-oriented heroes, six each. Despite this division, I can pick whoever tickles my fancy, as some of these heroes possess similar abilities to what they do in the standard game.
In Overwatch: Classic, we’re stepping back in time to the original game’s launch with this limited-time mode. This means that some aspects of the gameplay may feel a tad clunky or unbalanced compared to the current version. With heroes from the first Overwatch (OW1) like Hanzo taking center stage again, there are only five Tanks and four Supports available. However, with 12 DPS Heroes in play, making a selection can be quite challenging as they significantly impact the game’s flow due to their large number.
As an enthusiastic Overwatch 2 player, I’ve taken various aspects into account when evaluating Damage Per Second (DPS) heroes: their enjoyment factor during gameplay, the influence they can exert on the battlefield, their compatibility within a team setup, and their overall effectiveness in the current meta. These elements are crucial for ranking these heroes in Classic mode.
6 Mei
Terrific Primary Fire, Clutch Wall and Ultimate
This is what Mei’s kit looks like in Overwatch 2‘s Classic mode:
- Endothermic Blaster: Short-range spray weapon that freezes enemies.
- Endothermic Blaster: Long-range icicle launcher.
- Cryo-freeze: Become invulnerable and heal yourself.
- Ice Wall: Create a wall in front of you.
- Blizzard: Launch a weather control drone that freezes enemies in a wide area.
Players choosing Mei as Overwatch’s Damage Per Second (DPS) character might find her capabilities unexpected. Her primary weapon targets individually, but it still hinders an enemy’s mobility significantly. However, the most notable alteration is that it also momentarily freezes the enemy. This freeze can be extremely beneficial for single-handedly defeating non-Tank characters and even disrupting many top abilities in Overwatch 2’s Classic mode.
Beyond that, another notable shift is the Ice Wall’s durability. Instead of the usual 250 hit points, each wall now boasts a whopping 500 hit points! This substantial upgrade has proven to be a game-changer, often turning the tide in team fights and providing a sturdy barrier for quite some time until reinforcements arrive.
As a dedicated enthusiast, I’ve noticed that neither Mei’s Ultimate nor her Cryo-Freeze have seen significant modifications in their mechanics. However, their importance within the game remains undeniable, with the Ultimate alone possessing the power to shift the tide of battle entirely.
5 Soldier 76
No-Recoil Primary Fire, Excellent Ultimate
This DPS Hero’s kit in Overwatch: Classic comprises:
- Heavy Pulse Rifle: Automatic assault weapon.
- Helix Rockets: Launch a volley of explosive rockets.
- Sprint: Run faster while moving forward.
- Biotic Field: Deploy a field that heals you and your allies.
- Tactical Visor: Automatically aims your weapon at targets in view.
In the classic mode of Overwatch 2, Soldier 76 stands out among the best Damage Per Second (DPS) Heroes due to a modification in his primary fire mechanic. Unlike other weapons, the Heavy Pulse Rifle he wields in this mode has no recoil at all. However, he doesn’t overpower characters like Cassidy, Hanzo, or Bastion to an unbalanced extent.
This is due to the fact that without any recoil, the spread of the bullet grows wider the longer the trigger is pressed, and each bullet causes only 17 points of damage. Consequently, it’s better to shoot in bursts at long ranges or for smaller targets; attacking tanks continuously remains too powerful.
Beyond that, the Helix Rockets from the character still inflict substantial damage. Moreover, his area-of-effect healing skill is crucial during team fights, and his speed boost to reposition himself also proves beneficial. In this version of Overwatch 2’s Classic mode, Soldier 76’s Tactical Visor functions as an easy-to-use aimbot, playing a key role similar to its function in the standard game. His high accuracy and team support, even without his Ultimate ability, make him deserving of a spot among the top Damage Per Second (DPS) Heroes in Overwatch 2’s Classic mode.
4 Genji
Longer Ultimate And Counter To Meta Pick Bastion
Genji’s kit in Overwatch: Classic consists of these abilities:
- Cyber-Agility: Climb on walls and double jump.
- Shuriken: Throw an accurate burst of 3 projectiles.
- Shuriken: Throw a fan of 3 projectiles in an arc.
- Swift Strike: Rapidly dash forward and inflict damage on enemies. Eliminations reset the cooldown.
- Deflect: Deflect incoming projectiles towards the direction you are aiming and block melee attacks.
- Dragonblade: Unsheathe a deadly melee weapon.
In the Overwatch series, Genji stands out for having rich lore and in Classic mode, he primarily retains his role as a Damage Per Second (DPS) hero. Despite some similarities, there are compelling reasons to choose him in this setting. Firstly, he’s more nimble here. With the ability to reset his double jump by wall climbing, players have enhanced movement possibilities, enabling them to outmaneuver or flank a rear-line enemy or make a swift escape when necessary.
Besides that, the most significant alteration lies within his Ultimate. Dragonblade now lasts for 8 seconds, which typically affords ample time to eliminate more than half the opposing team. Additionally, it inflicts greater damage compared to regular gameplay, making it simpler to secure more accurate kills. Furthermore, there are no Moira or Ana characters present to hinder him in any way. Roadhog’s hook remains a hindrance, but he can successfully evade it.
In case you want to rephrase that in a more conversational manner: Don’t forget, Genji is an exceptional counter for Bastion, one of Overwatch’s most frequently played DPS characters. Bastion can wipe out any hero, and neutralizing him during a game is usually the primary concern. Although the duration of the Deflect ability is slightly shorter at 1.5 seconds, it remains vital.
3 Bastion
Immobile, But Melts All Enemies
Bastion is an overpowered DPS Hero in Overwatch: Classic, and his abilities are:
- Configuration Recon: Mobile with a light automatic weapon.
- Configuration Sentry: Immobile with a powerful rotary cannon.
- Configure: Switch between weapon configurations.
- Self-Repair: Heals yourself.
- Configuration Tank: Mobile with a powerful cannon.
In Overwatch 2’s Classic mode, novice players can witness the overwhelming power that Bastion once held as a Damage Per Second (DPS) hero in previous versions of the game.
Initially, he remains stationary when transformed into Sentry mode. However, this form grants him an impressive level of power. Not only does it deal significant damage, but he can maintain this state for an extended period, effectively indefinitely. He carries 200 ammunition rounds, which may seem limiting at first glance. Yet, the reload process is relatively swift, making this potential disadvantage manageable.
Another fantastic aspect that elevates Bastion as an exceptional Damage Per Second (DPS) Hero in Overwatch: Classic is his Self-Healing ability. In essence, he has the capacity to repeatedly heal himself without the necessity of a dedicated healer. Given that the healing rate is also quite decent, it’s unlikely that he will meet an untimely demise.
In conclusion, the Ultimate ability of Bastion in Overwatch 2 is significantly improved compared to its current form. While the existing version isn’t impressive, the variant found in Classic mode is exceptional. For a period of 8 seconds, Bastion transforms into a mobile artillery piece, inflicting tremendous splash damage and knockback on his targeted enemies.
2 Cassidy
Excellent All-Round Damage Dealer
Cassidy’s kit comprises the following abilities:
- Peacekeeper: Accurate, powerful revolver.
- Peacekeeper (Fan the Hammer): Wildly fire remaining rounds.
- Combat Roll: Roll in the direction you’re moving and reload.
- Flashbang: Stun enemies in front of you.
- Deadeye: Face off against your enemies. Press your Ultimate to lock on, then Primary Fire to fire.
In Overwatch Classic, I’ve noticed that Cassidy, also known as Reaper, is the go-to hero for dealing damage among players. He’s a formidable force, and his abilities seem even more lethal compared to the regular game version.
Initially, Cassidy inflicts significant damage per bullet, and typically, two to three body shots are enough to eliminate a non-Tank hero when using primary fire. However, things change when we discuss secondary fire – Fan the Hammer. Each bullet from this mode deals 70 points of damage. If you manage to hit all six bullets consecutively, you can instantly defeat any non-Tank Hero with full health. The recoil might be difficult to handle, but the sheer amount of damage it provides makes it worth sticking with.
In this revision, the character’s second skill temporarily incapacitates enemies, making them susceptible, which offers players an excellent opportunity to defeat their opponents swiftly. Typically, Cassidy’s strategies revolve around stunning targets and quickly eliminating them with Fan the Hammer.
1 Hanzo
Excellent Any-Range Hero, And Scatter Arrow Is Back
Hanzo’s kit in Overwatch: Classic looks like:
- Storm Bow: Hold to charge then release to launch arrows further.
- Sonic Arrow: Reveals enemies for a short time upon impact.
- Scatter Arrow: Splits into multiple ricochet arrows on impact.
- Dragonstrike: Launch a deadly Dragon Spirit that devastated enemies it passes through.
- Wall Climb: Jump at wall to climb up them.
In the Classic mode of Overwatch 2, Hanzo is currently considered a flawed character. The main cause for this is his Scatter Arrow ability, which is not included in the current game version. This absence of the Scatter Arrow makes Hanzo seem more problematic or “broken” compared to his previous state, for those who haven’t yet played him.
Fundamentally, this ability causes a single arrow to disperse into numerous erratic arrows, inflicting immense damage on each impact. This makes it an effective tool for controlling strategic points and tight quarters, but there’s a crucial detail. Because it initially launches as a single arrow, players can precisely aim it at an enemy’s foot, guaranteeing that all the arrows strike them. Notably, this move can eliminate almost any Hero in the game, including Tanks.
Besides Scatter Arrow, Hanzo’s main attack inflicts a significant amount of damage and can eliminate a non-tank hero with a headshot. Sonic Arrow is also useful for scouting, and it’s an excellent team utility. To add, his Ultimate is less evadable than Cassidy’s, making it one of the most powerful abilities in the game.
Without question, Hanzo solidifies his status as Overwatch 2’s top Original Damage Per Second (DPS) hero in Classic mode.
