As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that the digital age has revolutionized the way we access and enjoy games. Yet, even in this era of global connectivity, there are still hidden gems that slip through the cracks, never making it to our shores.
Migrating to a digital gaming market brings an advantage: games can be accessed universally without geographical restrictions. No more delays or region locks – a game becomes available across all digital platforms as soon as it is ready for release, or even slightly before.
As a passionate gamer, I often find myself stumbling upon hidden gems on my PlayStation 4, games that somehow missed making it big in the U.S. Despite the gaming world becoming increasingly interconnected, there are still some fantastic RPGs that haven’t quite broken through to American audiences. Maybe they were small indie titles lacking the resources for global release, or foreign-language games content with their home market success. Either way, I keep discovering these under-the-radar masterpieces and can’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore them.
5 The Dragoness: Command Of The Flame
A Might And Magic Inspired Strategy RPG
- Released: 2021
- Developers: Crazy Goat Games
- Publishers: PQube
This game openly draws inspiration from “Heroes of Might and Magic,” but imitation can often be the highest form of flattery. The game, titled “The Dragoness: Command of the Flame,” brings numerous fresh twists to the classic strategy role-playing genre, making it a discussion-worthy title. Unfortunately, gamers seeking to engage in “Might and Magic” challenges (while awaiting the new game) with console convenience will be disappointed as the PS4 version of this game is exclusive to Japan.
The title is a streamlined and simplified version of what it emulates but with a good story and unique graphics that help give it some personality. Also, a pangolin wearing a little hat provides tutorial info on the game. This is another selling point.
4 City Shrouded In Shadow
A Survival RPG With So, So Many Monsters
“City Engulfed in Darkness” – This intriguing title doesn’t have many western counterparts. It represents a game that takes place in a Japanese city, where legendary mechas, aliens, and monsters clash or wreak havoc indiscriminately. As a player, you are simply an observer trying to navigate through the chaos to reach safety. The role-playing game (RPG) aspects come into play as you select your character and make decisions aimed at survival.
As someone deeply engrossed in a game where I unleash colossal monsters upon a cityscape, there are unexpectedly quiet, intimate moments that make this gaming experience incredibly immersive. Unfortunately, due to licensing complications, this title hasn’t yet graced the screens of American PS4 consoles. Western gamers like myself must find alternative avenues to satiate our insatiable Kaiju cravings.
3 Super Robot Wars 30
A Mecha Lover’s Dream
This strategy RPG truly embodies its name, as it’s nothing short of a ‘super robot war.’ The game features mechas and gundams from over twenty different anime and manga series, all banding together to conquer various adversaries. Drawing heavily from such a vast range of anime and manga, Super Robot Wars 30 is an eye-catching title with numerous stylish effects that intensify the sense of destruction caused by the mechas.
In other words, since this game will feature enemies from various series, it’s likely to become part of the special category of “epic boss battle” JRPGs. Unfortunately, as has happened before, licensing issues have prevented Super Robot Wars 30 from being released in the west on the PS4.
2 Monochrome Mobius: Rights And Wrongs Forgotten
A Sleek And Expansive JRPG
- Released: 2022
- Developers: Aquaplus
- Publishers:DMM.com, Shiravune, DMM Games
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my excitement over “Monochrome Mobius.” This JRPG seamlessly blends familiar genre traditions with a unique eastern aesthetic, creating an epic tale that truly captivates. The protagonist, Oshtor, embarks on an extraordinary journey, transitioning from humble beginnings on the outskirts of an empire to becoming the pivotal figure in events that could determine the world’s destiny.
In battles, you engage enemies encountered in the main game map, leading to a separate battle arena similar to traditional RPGs. A game with a storyline about a hero reluctantly embarking on a grand, world-saving adventure sounds appealing to many western gamers. However, Monochrome Mobius remains an exclusive Japanese title for the PS4.
1 The Legend Of Heroes: Kuro No Kiseki 2: Crimson Sin
A Sprawling Fantasy JRPG
- Released: 2023
- Developers: Nihon Falcom
- Publishers: Clouded Leopard Entertainment
This captivating and fashionable installment in a cherished series blends sci-fi and fantasy elements in an extraordinary, captivating way. The Legend of Heroes: Kuro no Kiseki 2: Crimson Sin presents a setting reminiscent of JRPGs, where quaint, cottage-core hamlets and picturesque, magical villages coexist with organizations like the Central Intelligence Division. These entities engage in battles against cybernetic warriors who emit an eerie, ominous energy. Since it’s a sequel, there may be certain aspects that require catching up from the first game, but its exceptional combat system and meticulously crafted environments make this a title that will undoubtedly leave a void on western consoles.
For Western PS4 players, the stunningly beautiful Republic of Calvard offers an immersive experience as they delve into its depths. With exceptional graphics and audio design, this game is a visual and auditory treat, unfortunately, it’s currently not available for purchase by them.
