As a gamer who’s been around the block a few times, I must say this year has been nothing short of extraordinary. The games that graced our screens were not just masterpieces, but they took us on emotional rollercoasters, transported us to fantastical worlds, and even made us nostalgic for simpler times.
One game that truly stood out was Astro Bot. This little bot with a big heart stole the show and won the Game of the Year at TGA 2024 against some fierce competition. As someone who grew up with a PlayStation in hand, I couldn’t help but feel like it was a love letter to us gamers – a celebration of our shared passion for video games.
From cameos of beloved characters from Resident Evil to Shadow of the Colossus, every level was uniquely crafted with whimsical wonder that made me smile in pure joy. I mean, who wouldn’t be happy when they see Astro Bot bouncing around a platformer adventure game that feels like a love letter to gaming itself?
But let’s not forget the other gems of 2024. Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth took us on an emotional rollercoaster, with an open-world formula and combat system that left me in awe. And who could forget Astro Bot’s fellow nominees like Metaphor: Refantazio or the underdog, Black Myth: Wukong?
So, as we close out 2024, I can’t help but feel grateful for the incredible journey that gaming has taken me on. It’s not every day you get to play a game that feels like it was made just for you – and Astro Bot did exactly that. Just remember, if you don’t play Astro Bot, you’re not a real gamer… or something like that! 😉
This year, PlayStation saw its share of ups and downs, with highlights such as revealing the much-anticipated PS5 Pro Console and the thrilling preview of Ghost of Yotei at the Fall State of Play event. However, it also faced a significant setback with the Concord incident.
Fortunately, our purpose isn’t that particular topic today; instead, we’ll delve into the standout PlayStation-exclusive games that left an impression on viewers in 2021, regardless of those that also launched on PC at the same time.
If these games eventually appear on your Steam store in the future, they would be an excellent choice to enjoy the top-notch offerings from this brand in the year 2024.
Among these games, many have versions for computers as well. However, we’ve added some exclusive titles for the PlayStation 5, which at present, can only be played on this specific platform.
10. The Last Of Us Part 2 Remastered
A Fresh Coat Of Paint For A Renowned Title
In The Last of Us Part 2, the interconnected narratives of Ellie and Abby deliver an immersive gaming experience, each with their unique playstyles. This combination served as Naughty Dog’s finest offering in terms of a sequel, solidifying itself as a new benchmark within the gaming industry.
Nonetheless, when the remastered version came out in early 2024, it sparked diverse opinions, yet regardless of that, it introduced some exciting new elements such as the addition of the Lost Levels and a full rogue-like “No Return” mode featuring multiple playable characters.
While The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered might not be among the top picks, it’s an excellent choice for those who haven’t yet purchased the $10 upgrade from the PlayStation Network Store.
9. Rise Of The Ronin
An Unpolished Gem That Deserves Some Love
A less-acknowledged game scheduled for 2024, “Rise of the Ronin”, faced minimal recognition because its graphical quality drew criticism. Despite this, it outperformed the sales of the Nioh series, making it a triumphant endeavor for Team Ninja.
Despite the drawback of a rather monotonous open-world setup, this game’s smooth battle mechanics and captivating narrative, bolstered by high-quality Japanese voice acting, make it hard to turn away from.
Hey there, fellow gamers! As a long-time fan of Team Ninja and their action-packed games, I can confidently say that if you’re hesitant about trying out their latest creation, fear not! The first chapter of this gem is available for free on the PSN Store. If it catches your fancy after giving it a spin, you can even carry your progress over to the full game. Trust me, it’s worth diving in and experiencing the action-packed adventure that awaits you!
8. Stellar Blade
The Dawn Of EVE With A Stellar Dream
Stellar Blade marks the debut of Shift Up’s AAA title, featuring intense action combat and narrative set in a post-dystopian world. This game continues to offer fresh content with regular free updates, and recently collaborated with Nier: Automata for a DLC, introducing new costumes.
In exclusive release on PlayStation 5, this game swiftly gained international acclaim as a top-selling title. The stunning array of costumes in Eve has players spellbound, while its immersive battle system reminds me of the exceptional combat design found in Metal Gear Rising.
To put it simply, while the story may not be exceptionally unique, this game is incredibly engaging, boasting an abundance of challenging boss battles, a streamlined open-world design, and, above all, an unforgettable soundtrack that stands out among contemporary titles.
7. Pacific Drive
Station Wagon Vs. The World
This year, there were no scarcity of awe-inspiring independent games, and among them, one standout title left spectators spellbound – Pacific Drive. Fundamentally, it’s one of the most distinctive games of the year due to its innovative approach to gameplay mechanics.
This is an adventure game where you and your extensively modifiable vehicle confront the ominous dangers and perils lurking within the Olympic Exclusion Zone. The experience has elements reminiscent of a procedurally generated game, with every playthrough feeling unique and progressively tougher as you advance.
One highlight is definitely customizing your ride! At the auto shop, you can choose various armoring materials, strengthen or enhance specific components, and even adjust the vehicle’s aesthetic. The possibilities are virtually endless.
Experiencing this garage-based adventure on your PS5 or PC is incredibly engaging, drawing you into a cycle of seeking resources from dangerous environments, all while unraveling an intriguing and unsettling storyline that deepens as you progress. It’s a game you won’t want to miss!
6. Ultros
Gloriously Psychedelic & Neon
scarcely do you find a Metroidvania game as inventive as Ultros, yet fortunately, it thrives on being an unusual bird within its group, and it hails from the same publishing house as Pacific Drive and Kepler Interactive.
The visual and auditory elements are so captivating, they grab your notice from the very first moments.
Although the presentation leaves you in awe, the fighting mechanics are generally satisfactory, offering a typical dodge-roll combat system that includes hack-and-slash gameplay. The battles with bosses introduce an extra level of challenge to the overall experience.
By incorporating elements common to other Metroidvania-style games, Ultros encourages exploration, providing additional skills and gameplay enhancements as you delve deeper into the intricate mystery surrounding ‘ULTROS’, all while traversing the enigmatic landscape of The Sarcophagus.
If you’re aiming for a complete experience, remember to play through the game sequentially, as each session reveals fresh aspects to the enigmatic storyline and introduces new gameplay mechanics, including access to previously locked regions and improved skills to conquer.
5. Black Myth: Wukong
A Legendary Tale Of The Destined One
This year, a captivating game known as Black Myth: Wukong swept across the globe, inspired by the classic Chinese tale “Journey to the West.
This game stands out in the Souls-like genre by showcasing an impressive array of unique features, and what makes it particularly daring is its heavy emphasis on action gameplay.
Intricate yet straightforward stages brimming with an array of distinctive adversaries, treasures, and relentless boss battles await you in this exciting journey. As you progress, you’ll be awestruck by the challenges you encounter while safeguarding the Legacy of the Destined One with your reliable staff.
Experiencing Black Myth: Wukong’s stunning gameplay, featuring its awe-inspiring visuals from Unreal Engine 5 and smooth hack-and-slash action, while staying true to its original content, makes it one of the standout games this year for PS5 players.
4. Helldivers 2
How ‘Bout A Nice Cup Of LIBER-TEA?
In the heat of battle, soaring from my Super Destroyer with my comrades in Helldivers 2, we’re relentlessly blasting, bombarding, and obliterating waves upon waves of alien insects, mechanical automatons, and psychic beings across various planets. This adrenaline-pumping, intense multiplayer gaming experience is a rare thrill that seldom graces my gaming life.
As a longtime gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can attest that the gaming industry has come a long way since its humble beginnings. One such remarkable example is the saga of “Kerbal Space Program” (KSP), a game that has captivated my attention for quite some time now.
Initially, the game faced a setback when it was delisted from Steam in several countries due to a PSN account requirement. This turn of events left many gamers, including myself, feeling disheartened and frustrated. However, I must say that Arrowhead Studio’s unwavering commitment to their loyal community has been nothing short of commendable.
Their dedication to providing countless updates and balancing patches has not only revitalized the game but also created an environment where the gaming experience is continually evolving. This level of support and attention to detail is something that I have rarely witnessed in my years as a gamer, and it truly sets KSP apart from many other games on the market today.
In conclusion, while the initial setback may have been disappointing, Arrowhead Studio’s commitment to their players has ensured that Kerbal Space Program remains a staple in my gaming rotation. Their efforts serve as an excellent example of how developers can turn adversity into opportunity and create a thriving community around their game.
It also won the Best Multiplayer and Best Ongoing Game categories at The Game Awards 2024.
Beyond the recent addition of the free update, Omens of Tyranny, introducing a fresh adversary group, as well as additional weapons and armor to unlock, this game offers an enjoyable experience whether you play alone or with companions on your PS5. The shared excitement it brings makes it a compelling choice.
3. Silent Hill 2
In My Restless Dreams, I See That Town
As a diehard fan, I’ve got to say, the excitement leading up to the release of Silent Hill 2 Remake was palpable, but it managed to surpass even those lofty expectations. It’s easily one of the finest survival-horror games out there, and it did an outstanding job honoring the original in virtually every aspect.
The hauntingly beautiful ambient sounds in this game will give you goosebumps, skillfully revealing the complex personality of the protagonist, James Sunderland, as he navigates the eerie and sorrowful town of Silent Hills.
The atmospheric sound effects are spine-tinglingly good, expertly portraying the intricate nature of main character James Sunderland as you journey through the ominous and melancholic town of Silent Hills.
This captivating storyline boasts an intriguing assortment of characters, and it often leads to various conclusions. However, this unpredictable narrative is balanced by a challenging gameplay loop that puts your mental strength to the test with numerous brain-teasing puzzles and terrifying creatures you must evade.
It’s clear that the Bloober Team takes great care to offer a memorable experience, whether for dedicated fans or those just starting out.
2. Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth
No Promises Await At Journey’s End
This past year was exceptional for JRPGs, and among my top picks was Metaphor: Refantazio. Yet, Square Enix succeeded in taking me on an emotional journey during my initial playthrough of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on the PlayStation 5, stirring a whirlwind of feelings within me.
Beyond the lingering bitterness of its complex finale, Final Fantasy 7 Remake left a profound impact on me across multiple fronts. From the enticing expanse of its open-world design to the captivating reincarnation of one of my favorite combat systems in recent gaming history – the updated Active Time Battle system – it’s safe to say that I was thoroughly impressed!
The main narrative is skillfully juxtaposed with numerous breaks, offering a variety of mini-games, optional missions that culminate in boss fights or additional sub-world events, as well as heartwarming instances where you can develop relationships with characters such as Aerith and Barret.
Although a PC version will be available in the upcoming month, I would still enthusiastically suggest this game to anyone or my friends on PS5, as it has become an indispensable title due to its incredibly rich and intricate elements. The characters in this game are so well-developed that they resonate deeply with your emotions by the game’s end.
1. Astro Bot
Deserving Of Every Single Award & Accolade
Growing up with a deep affection for my PS2 and PSP, I frequently looked back on the numerous creative and charming platformer and movie-tie-in games from those times. Can you guess which game this year honored that creativity and the gaming industry as a whole? That’s right, Astro Bot!
This game, developed by Asobi Studios, is an extensive platformer adventure filled with numerous references from video games spanning the past few decades, ranging from Resident Evil to overlooked classics like Shadow of the Colossus and Gravity Rush. In fact, one could argue that Astro Bot serves as a heartfelt tribute to these games.
Without mentioning cameos, the game’s levels are individually designed with such delightful whimsy that you can’t help but feel happiness radiating from your core as you journey through galaxies and their respective worlds. You’re rescuing Astro’s friends and restoring his spaceship, and it’s a breathtaking spectacle to witness. For me and my peers, it’s an extraordinary celebration of gaming.
Regarding the uncalled-for critique aside, this PlayStation exclusive game is currently the top choice to play, and its unexpected victory of Game of the Year at TGA 2024 against heavyweights like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Black Myth: Wukong makes it all the more satisfying as a conclusion to the show.
