Nowadays, with advanced graphics being commonplace, it’s hardly unexpected to find games that offer detailed character creators. What’s more surprising is encountering those that don’t. Look back just a few decades, and including a character creator in a video game was considered an exceptional bonus.
It was even more remarkable when it was brimming with a multitude of choices. Back then, having the opportunity to choose from at least two genders wasn’t always an option, so these PlayStation 2 games deserve recognition for being progressive in terms of character customization.
7. Tony Hawk’s Underground

In my opinion, Tony Hawk’s Underground marked a significant leap forward for the series. Unlike its predecessors that primarily focused on a collection of skateboarding tasks, this game – being the fifth installment and the first without a numerical label – was centered around an engaging narrative. This story followed a skater climbing up from a local tough guy in New Jersey to a professional skater performing tricks alongside the legendary Tony Hawk himself.
As a passionate cinephile, I found myself immersed in a cinematic experience where I had the power to craft my own protagonist from an array of diverse options. The game offered a unique feature that allowed me to digitally capture my very own likeness using a camera. But that was just the beginning; the customization didn’t end there. This interactive masterpiece also granted me the freedom to design a skate park, personalize the graphics on my skateboard, and even choreograph a dazzling trick sequence.
6. Soulcalibur 3
Make A Fighter And Customize Their Fighting Style
In the game Soulcalibur, some distinctive guest fighters were introduced ahead of Mortal Kombat, which pioneered this practice in 2011. One particularly intriguing character in the game is the customizable one that players can design themselves.
In every gaming generation, fighting games often showcase some of the most visually stunning graphics. Just like others, Soulcalibur 3 was no exception in terms of visual appeal. Consequently, the option to craft a character in this game held significant allure. Remarkably, the character creator remained a consistent feature across various Soulcalibur games, growing increasingly intricate with each new release.
5. The Godfather
See The Story Through A Custom Character‘s Eyes
During the PlayStation 2 era, it was tough for any open-world game to match the success that Grand Theft Auto had attained. However, The Godfather found a way to hold its ground and presented features that most games from that period were missing.
In simpler terms, the game’s shooting felt appropriate for its time as an open-world title, and it accurately told the story of the first movie in the iconic trilogy from a fresh character’s viewpoint, which players could create at the start of the campaign. The character creator offered a good range of options while maintaining the visual style consistent with the game’s environment.
4. Fight Night Round 2
Make A Character And Get Clobbered
In the Fight Night series, individuals got a chance to simulate boxing matches without enduring actual bruises, injuries, or years of rigorous training. The game allowed players to create their characters and step into the ring if they desired, thanks to an innovative character development system.
One striking aspect of it could be its capability to subtly alter facial characteristics, almost like sculpting a face using your hands. In the world of boxing, this sculpture would take on the marks of numerous blows, transforming into a ring-worn mask adorned with bruises.
Speaking of similar themes but centering around wrestling, the PlayStation 2’s WWE SmackDown! series boasted fantastic Create-a-Wrestler features that remain enjoyable to rediscover even in the present times.
3. Mortal Kombat: Armageddon
Safe To Assume “Create” Is Spelled With A “K”
Mortal Kombat Armageddon resembled the Mortal Kombat Trilogy for PlayStation 2 era, offering an extensive roster of characters that had been introduced in the series up until then. Additionally, it showcased a comprehensive character creation tool, cleverly named “Kreate a Fighter”.
In simpler terms, the game offered numerous visual styles for personalization, plus the chance to modify attacks and unique moves. Players could even pen their character’s storyline as it climbed the arcade rankings. Remarkably, over fifteen years since the launch of Armageddon, this aspect hasn’t been reintroduced in the series yet.
In Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, they didn’t add exclusive finishing moves for every fighter, meaning that custom characters lacked the ability to perform a distinct final blow.
2. Final Fantasy 11
A Series Of Firsts For The Series
Final Fantasy 11 marked several pioneering milestones. It was the inaugural MMORPG within the Final Fantasy series, the debut MMORPG on PlayStation 2, the initial one with crossplay functionality, and the premier game in the series to incorporate a character creation option.
In comparison to upcoming MMORPGs, this game doesn’t offer the same level of advanced features. However, it distinguishes itself on consoles by providing a rich selection of races for players to pick from. Just like any RPG, customizing your character extends beyond the character creation screen, as the different armors and equipment can alter the appearance of your character.
The support for “Final Fantasy 11” on PlayStation 2 has concluded, but you can continue playing it on a computer instead.
