For me, Midnight Club 3 holds a unique place, as it shares the same love for Hip Hop music as Need for Speed: Underground 2 does, both being exceptionally balanced in this genre.
The central gameplay revolves around chasing down street racers and their infamous crews in numerous urban locations. By triumphing in multiple competitions, you establish a formidable reputation that eventually leads to confrontations with the top echelons of the hierarchy.
This game’s narrative is reminiscent of many well-known street racing games, but let me assure you, prior to the Crew series by Ubisoft, no other game offered such a diverse range of vehicles – from Sports Bikes, Choppers, and even Humvees.
The competitive element of this game remains exciting throughout, and at the conclusion of your term, you’ll find yourself vying for the title of the latest U.S. series champion.
8. Driver: San Francisco
High-Octane And Adrenaline-Fueled
I want to make this clear: Driver: San Francisco isn’t a typical racing game, but it retains a sense of speed and competition that makes it feel like one. Plus, the quality of its storytelling is impressive enough for it to be included in this discussion.
The story continues right where Driver 3 left off, following FBI Agent John Tanner as he persists in tracking down the cunning criminal mastermind, Charles Jericho.
The narrative weaves together elements of hardboiled police drama and intense action scenes. Moreover, featuring a headstrong character such as John along with some witty humor serves to balance out the intensity of the action plotline.
Combine it with exceptionally executed features like the ‘Shift’ function, which enables seamless car swapping throughout missions, and engaging driving dynamics, and you have a robust action-driving game title on your hands.
7. Need For Speed: The Run
One Last Ride From Black Box
NFS: The Run was Black Box’s final release before the studio’s inevitable closure.
These games share a resemblance with NFS Undercover, as they both incorporate classic racing game mechanics. However, unlike other racing games, their main narratives are driven more by thrilling cinematic plotlines.
In this single-player mode, you take control of the infamous street racer Jake Rourke, who is evading the mob and attempting to clear his debts by winning multiple high-stakes races across the city.
Fortunately, unlike Driver San Francisco, it’s not an all-action movie in game form, but instead offers a good blend of narrative and racing elements. Occasionally, some races transform into pursuit missions with varying goals.
Despite finding the quick-time events (QTE) less appealing when playing as Jake on foot, the script turns out to be more engaging than one might initially suppose. It can be silly at points, undeniably, but if viewed as a B-movie, it becomes quite an entertaining experience.

It’s as if each back-and-forth is not just dialogue but a test of wills for our protagonist Aiden, elevating his journey from rock bottom to a rollercoaster ride of emotional peaks and real-life stakes.
This career mode in a racing simulation game isn’t like most others because, upon completion, you’ll fully understand the challenging path we all must traverse to reach the top tier.

Exploring Sho’s history and the urban legend of the “Fastest Legend” from a decade back, the game’s intriguing storyline manages to captivate you, even with its offbeat and humorous tone.
Although the game wasn’t officially translated into our language, a dedicated fan community has created a translation patch for it. This means you can easily download and enjoy the game with its unique “Lagoon-go” dialogue.

A Modern NFS Done Right

This game boasts exceptional voice acting and tempo that takes you by surprise, despite a few sections feeling somewhat commonplace. To top it off, the game’s day-night cycle in the progression of gameplay maintains interest as you accumulate reputation and funds to participate in more substantial races.

Despite not being as renowned as the top pick, NFS: Carbon was another cherished game from my childhood. It had all the makings of an exceptional Need for Speed title, with Black Box Studios leading the development.

As a gamer, I can’t help but appreciate the addition of my very own team in Carbon. These allies not only provide some much-needed humor, but also delve deeper into the intriguing narrative that unfolds with its noir storytelling style.

Without a doubt, the original Need for Speed: Most Wanted stands out as one of the best racing games ever made. Despite numerous subsequent installments in the franchise, its dedicated fan base continues to appreciate it long after its release.
2005’s standout release for Black Box was undeniably their masterpiece, boasting unforgettable elements such as an iconic soundtrack, realistic driving dynamics, and intense cop chases that really tested your skills.
The icing on the cake? A tale that’s hard to forget, where the protagonist faces off against the mythical Blacklist racers, ascending the infamy rankings, and ultimately reclaiming the BMW M3 GTR from Razor.
I found myself drawn into a storyline that maintains a delightful, lighthearted tone, mirroring the humorous and engaging scripts of the initial Fast and Furious films. The production values were spot-on, capitalizing on the comedic elements to create an entertaining experience for fans like me.
The grungy, melancholic feel of this game makes it an essential part of my childhood memories, and it masterfully encapsulates the vibe of 2000s video gaming for me.
