In the world of Resident Evil, where zombie and B.O.W. outbreaks are frequent, it’s crucial to be ready for the worst. Consequently, most inhabitants of this franchise have the ability to defend themselves against a few zombies. However, it’s important to note that not everyone in this long-running series relishes conflict; some go to great lengths to steer clear of direct confrontations altogether.
In the world of Resident Evil games, it’s no secret that those unwilling to fight may find themselves in peril due to the relentless challenges they face. Yet, there have been numerous captivating characters who, while not fighters by nature, remain fascinating and entertaining whenever they grace our screens.
Attention! The forthcoming content may reveal significant plot details from various games within the Resident Evil series, so proceed with caution if you wish to avoid potential spoilers.
7. Brad Vickers (Resident Evil)
Brad Is A Lot More Cowardly Than His Fellow S.T.A.R.S. Teammates
In the inaugural Resident Evil game, I spent the entire adventure orbiting the Spencer Mansion from a helicopter, frantically attempting to reach my teammates via radio, concocting an escape plan. My fellow S.T.A.R.S. members dubbed me ‘Chickenheart’ due to my timid nature, and this situation undoubtedly solidified that nickname. However, I did muster the courage to swoop in for a dramatic rescue at the end, but it was evident throughout the game that I wasn’t the type to engage in hand-to-hand combat with the mutants Jill and the gang faced.
I was thrilled to see Brad back in Resident Evil 3, but truthfully, it seemed more like a brief appearance given that Nemesis brutally kills him shortly after he enters the plot. Despite his timid demeanor, Brad has become a fan favorite, garnering quite the following due to the humorous memes that have sprung up around his character.
6. Annette Birkin (Resident Evil 2)
Despite Not Being A Skilled Combatant, Annette Still Comes Across As A Dangerous Antagonist
In “Resident Evil 2,” while William Birkin serves as the principal antagonist, his accomplice Annette emerges later in the game, posing an additional challenge for the player. Unlike William, who creates turmoil in a direct manner, Annette operates covertly, manipulating Leon and Claire from behind the scenes. She favors strategic maneuvers over brute force, working diligently to thwart anyone who might interfere with her plans.
Even though Annette arrived late, she remains an engaging character to observe, largely due to her quick-witted persona and the enigmatic atmosphere that consistently follows her. Annette tends to avoid getting involved in messy situations when possible, yet manages to present herself as a formidable adversary without any combat background.
5. Merchant (Resident Evil 4)
He May Possess An Army’s Worth Of Weapons, But The Mysterious Merchant Isn’t A Fighter
In both versions of Resident Evil 4, Leon occasionally remarks on how heavily armed the Merchant appears to be in his stalls. Despite having sufficient firepower to potentially eliminate a large portion of Saddler’s army on his own, the Merchant never discharges a single bullet during the entire game.
Rather than joining Leon’s battles with the Ganado, the Merchant chooses to stay hidden, secretly equipping Leon with weapons and supplies for his journey. This elusive character, who deals in arms, is one of the most enigmatic figures in the series, as his past and true identity remain a mystery, sparking immense fascination among fans due to his shady nature.
4. Ingrid Hunnigan (Resident Evil 4)
Leon’s Assistant Is Always There To Keep Him On The Straight And Narrow
As I was drafted to serve as a special agent under the president’s personal command, my first encounter was with my new partner, Hunnigan. Although she doesn’t physically accompany me on missions, she offers guidance through radio communications. Given my tendency to veer off course or get caught up in distractions, Hunnigan serves as an essential voice of reason, ensuring I stay mission-focused. To lighten the mood during tense situations, she also adds a touch of humor, making our partnership both productive and entertaining.
Despite having limited screen time, Hunnigan stands out as a remarkable character, demonstrating unwavering loyalty that sets her apart as one of the most trustworthy companions throughout the series. In a world filled with characters who are quick to betray for personal gain, Hunnigan shines as a rare exception.
3. Excella Gionne (Resident Evil 5)
Excella Uses Her Prestigious Position In Tricell To Support Wesker Without Putting herself In Danger
It seems Excella hadn’t bothered to learn about Albert Wesker’s true nature before teaming up with him, given she sincerely thought his malevolent mastermind was genuinely concerned for her well-being and wanted her to help create a new world. Regrettably, her hopes are dashed when Wesker deceives her, but prior to that, she served as a valuable ally who offered a refreshing contrast to Wesker’s brooding demeanor.
Instead, Excella exhibits an upbeat and sarcastic demeanor, yet she holds significant importance within the larger narrative, serving as a key figure in the Tricell corporation. Whenever Chris and Sheva encounter her, Excella tends to deploy one of her numerous Bio-Organic Weapon (B.O.W.) test subjects to carry out her covert operations. This keeps players guessing and alert throughout their encounters with her.
2. Zoe Baker (Resident Evil 7)
Zoe Never Confronts Her Twisted Family Directly But Is Still Hugely Important To The Plot
At the Baker’s dinner table where Ethan wakes up amidst an unappetizing feast, it’s Zoe, a family member who chooses not to present herself, that is absent. Being only partially immune to Eveline’s mold contamination, Zoe opts to live in a compact trailer detached from the main property. It later becomes accessible for Ethan upon his successful escape. Crucially, if it weren’t for Zoe informing him about the cure for Mia’s infection, Ethan would likely have failed in rescuing her, ultimately leading to his own demise.
In addition, Zoe introduces a significant level of suspense to the game by providing players with the choice between healing her or Mia. This decision-making process compels them to decide whether they owe her for her aid, or abandon her. Zoe is undeniably one of the most intriguing characters in Resident Evil 7, as she stands out from her corrupted family due to her calm and thoughtful demeanor.
1. Ashley Graham
Ashley Still Manages To Help Leon Out Here And There Without needing To Get Blood On Her Hands
As a fervent admirer, I must confess that Ashley, the President’s daughter, appears woefully underprepared for a confrontation with Saddler and his Los Illuminados troops. In the gripping narrative, this cult abducted Ashley as part of their devious scheme, leading to Leon being dispatched on a daring rescue mission. However, given that Ashley lacks the ability to defend herself, it’s crucial for players to remain vigilant, constantly monitoring her position to prevent an unwelcome encounter with the Game Over screen.
Nevertheless, Ashley doesn’t come off as grating, given that she remains an amusing character in her own right, particularly in the remake. Her innocent exuberance and humorous one-liners maintain the game’s Resident Evil 4 tone lively and entertaining, even when it veers towards the ominous. In fact, she has a dedicated segment where she manages to solve numerous puzzles while being pursued by possessed mutant knights. The remake of Resident Evil 4 skillfully developed her character, highlighting how harrowing such situations can be for an ordinary individual who isn’t a supercop or special agent.
