As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the intricate worlds of fantasy role-playing games, I must say that these three titles – Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, Tales of Berseria, and Nioh 2 – are truly remarkable gems in their respective genres.
In many video games, the theme of being a ‘hero’ is widely used and forms the basis for numerous titles. You’ll often find yourself saving princesses, defeating monsters, and preserving kingdoms – a tried-and-true approach that consistently appeals to players. Although it might seem a bit predictable or dull at times, this concept remains popular enough not to fade away. However, the idea of always playing the ‘good guy’ can sometimes feel forced or overly dramatic. For these gamers, games where they can play as the villain in the battle between good and evil are more intriguing.
In contrast to most games, those that allow players to take on the role of the antagonist are relatively scarce. However, among all genres, role-playing games (RPGs) offer this option more frequently due to their flexible nature. Instead of forcing players onto a predetermined path, RPGs enable users to create and control their own characters. While games where you embody a demon are not abundant, the gaming world is expansive, and there are some overlooked treasures hidden within it, simply waiting for discovery.
5 Darksiders 2
Play As Death, The Horseman Of The Apocalypse
The Darksiders series comprises a collection of action role-playing games with hack-and-slash elements, where you assume command over the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, taking on a different character in each installment. As you wreak havoc, you battle hordes of demons and monsters across diverse settings. Among the primary series games, Darksiders 2 stands out as the most exceptional in its genre.
In Darksiders 2, players assume the character of Death himself, accompanied by his steed Despair (a skeletal horse) and a raven sidekick named Dust. Their mission is to navigate the game’s world. Along the journey, Death gains new special powers, weapons, and traversal techniques as the story unfolds. Defeating enemies rewards players with experience points (XP), which in turn grant skill points for level-ups that can be used to learn new abilities from a skill tree. Additionally, equipping gear enhances Death’s attributes, and combo moves can be purchased from specific trainers within the game. The gameplay is enjoyable and reminiscent of Devil May Cry, with an RPG element adding a sense of progression, ensuring the experience remains fresh and engaging.
4 Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance
A Tactical RPG With A Vengeful Demon Protagonist
Disgaea 5 is a game that places you in the role of Killia, a reformed demon on a mission for vengeance against the Demon Emperor Void Dark. You’ll be joined by a variety of allies, all with the same objective. The aim in Disgaea 5 is to gather a strong team consisting of demons, monsters, and heroes, ultimately leading to the defeat of Void Dark.
Disgaea 5: A Fresh Take on the Classic Formula
To get started with the series, Disgaea 5 might not be the ideal choice for first-time players – that title goes to Disgaea 2. However, if you’re interested in playing as a demon character in a game with a more somber atmosphere, then Disgaea 5 is your game.
3 Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous
A CRPG Where You Transform Into A Demon
As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but share my excitement for diving back into the world of Pathfinder with “Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous,” the captivating CRPG developed by Owlcat Games. This epic sequel to “Pathfinder: Kingmaker” expands upon the foundations laid in the first game, introducing a plethora of fresh elements that make gameplay even more engaging.
10 different Mythic Paths are featured in ‘Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous’, such as GoldDragon, Lick, Legend, Azata, Angel, and Demon. The Demon Mythic Path allows players to assume a demonic form, teetering on the edge of losing control and going on a destructive rampage across the battlefield. Players can fine-tune their demonic abilities through Demonic Aspects, like the Babau Aspect that emphasizes deceit, or the Incubus Aspect that boosts persuasive powers. Additionally, Demons can master spells like Abyssal Chains, Demonic Form, Devour, and Blood Haze to deepen their demonic identity.
2 Tales of Berseria
A Dark Journey Of Daemonic Vengeance
Tales of Berseria serves as the sixth role-playing game in the Tales series, offering a somber narrative that starkly contrasts with earlier games in the franchise. Rather than a joyful journey, Tales of Berseria delves into themes of vengeance and intense disdain for the prevailing system.
In the game Tales of Berseria, the protagonist, Velvet, did not naturally become a daemon but was transformed by Daemonblight at a young age. This transformation made her a Therion, a type of daemon that can harness the powers of other daemons on demand. The antagonists in this story are similar to Paladins and Priests, but their aim is to eradicate Daemonblight by stripping all humans of their emotions. They believe Daemonblight is just a manifestation of humanity’s negative feelings. Velvet and her companions must thwart their plans to save the world from their destructive influence.
1 Nioh 2
A Soulslike RPG As A Half-Human/Half-Yokai
Nioh 2 is a role-playing game resembling the Souls series, set in ancient Japan during the Sengoku era. Players assume command of a character who’s half-Yokai, born to a demon mother and human father. In Japanese folklore, Yokai are beings with humanoid features and animal traits, often portrayed as demons or spirits in Japanese media like Mushishi and Spirited Away, where they are depicted as supernatural entities with enigmatic intentions.
One of the standout features of Nioh 2 lies in its diverse range of weapons. Unlike typical games that only offer standard weapon types such as swords, hammers, and greatswords, this game allows players to wield unique weapons like the Odachi (a long katana) or a kusarigama (two small sickles with a swinging spiked metal ball at the end), among others. Additionally, Nioh 2 introduces the option to use Yokai skills. By vanquishing and collecting a Soul Core from the defeated Yokai, players can unlock powerful abilities that enemies possess. This mechanic enables players to acquire and utilize these abilities, making them available for their characters instead of being exclusive to the enemies.
In Nioh 2, the core emphasis lies on its intense combat system, which is evident throughout the game. Even the seemingly feeble adversaries prove to be no walkovers; they all possess lethal unblockable attacks that can be disastrous if they connect. To offset this, the parry system has been meticulously crafted to thwart these attacks and leave enemies defenseless. Mastering the game requires players not only to understand but also to actively engage with Nioh 2’s mechanics, rather than relying on overpowered gear or weapons for success.
