The initial month’s revenue data for the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop has been disclosed, revealing that the indie game Deltarune outperformed Mario Kart World in digital sales. This impressive performance is likely due to the strategy of releasing chapters 3 and 4 of Deltarune on the same day as the Nintendo Switch 2, a move that probably boosted early sales significantly.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but share my excitement about “Deltarune” – an episodic RPG masterfully crafted by Toby Fox, the genius behind “Undertale”. Ever since the first chapter dropped in 2018, followed by the second chapter in 2021, we’ve been on tenterhooks for more of this captivating tale. Just recently, Toby Fox unveiled some exciting updates for this beloved game in April, and added to our anticipation was the announcement of an exclusive Nintendo Switch 2 feature for “Deltarune”. Now that June sales figures are out, it’s evident that these strategic moves have paved a successful path for this independent developer.
In June 2025, as per a study by Newzoo, Deltarune emerged as the highest-grossing digital game on the Nintendo Switch 2. The Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour trailed closely in second place, and Mario Kart World took third position among the top digital games sold during this period. Minecraft and No Man’s Sky occupied the fourth and fifth spots respectively for the best-selling digital titles in the initial month of the groundbreaking Nintendo Switch 2 console’s sales.
Deltarune Outsells Mario Kart World on Nintendo Switch 2 eShop
- Deltarune
- Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour
- Mario Kart World
- Minecraft
- No Man’s Sky
The digital earnings from Mario Kart World don’t include physical sales, but when you factor those in, Nintendo sold more copies of Mario Kart World than Deltarune. This aligns with a prior report stating that Mario Kart World sold over a million copies just in Japan. Notably, there are no physical versions of Deltarune for Switch available at the moment, which gives Nintendo an edge in terms of sales.
Besides these discoveries, Newzoo also highlighted that Deltarune wasn’t the sole third-party title thriving on the Nintendo Switch 2 in June 2025. Games like No Man’s Sky, Fantasy Life, and even Cyberpunk 2077 were significant contributors to the console’s total digital revenue during that month. Similar to Deltarune, Cyberpunk 2077 boasted an exclusive feature for the Nintendo Switch 2, and when considering physical sales as well, it ranked third among the top-selling games on the platform within its first month on sale.
Historically, Nintendo struggles with selling games developed by other companies (third-party titles). But a recent report shows that, at least for now, most sales of Nintendo Switch 2 games are first-party games made by Nintendo itself. However, the strong digital earnings of some independent and third-party games in June indicate there’s potential for success on Nintendo platforms for these developers as well.
