In the beginning of Dragon Quest 2 HD-2D Remake, you’re limited to a small area. But once you get the ship, the world expands dramatically! While you’ll have many places to visit, deciding where to go first can be overwhelming. Even with objective markers turned on, you’ll still have four options. This guide will help you choose the best first destination after obtaining the ship in Dragon Quest 2 Remake.
Where Should I Go First in Dragon Quest 2 Remake?
Acquiring the Ship & Beyond:
The beginning of Dragon Quest 2 Remake revolves around finding and teaming up with the first two characters: Caradoc, Prince of Cannock, and Peronel, Princess of Moonbrooke. After you’ve recruited them, your main goal becomes getting a ship. This early part of the game is pretty linear, so it doesn’t really matter where you go first until you have a ship.
Best Destinations After Getting a Ship in Dragon Quest 2 Remake
Four Main Options:
After you get a ship in Dragon Quest 2 Remake, deciding where to go next can be tricky, particularly if you’ve turned off the objective markers. Even with markers on, you’ll still need to pick one of four important destinations.
If you didn’t enable objective markers at the start of the game, you can turn them on whenever you like. Just go to the System Settings, then select Helpful Settings. You’ll find options there to adjust objective markers and other settings that make it easier to navigate.
These first four locations are the best places to start in DQ2 because you’ll need special items or upgrades to reach anywhere else. Here’s where to go first:
- Beran
- Tantegel
- Zahan
- Burrowell
Deciding where to start depends on a few things, since each place is necessary to visit and offers different advantages. We’ll share the order we recommend and explain our reasoning.
Best Destination Order:
We believe the order presented is the most helpful for players. When starting a new game, we recommend going to either Beran or Tantegel first. We initially chose Tantegel in our first playthrough, simply because we weren’t sure what to expect from other locations. However, in our second playthrough, we started with Beran. While it was difficult, even on the easiest difficulty, we were happy we did. Beran is where you can recruit Matilda, Princess of Cannock, who completes your party as the fourth and final member.
We’ll be discussing four different locations, each with its own unique appeal. Below, we’ll present them in the order we’ve selected, and also explain why you could choose to start with any one of them.
Beran:
- Key Items/Rewards: As previously mentioned, this is the location where you recruit the final member of the party. If you are OK with a considerable early challenge, make this your first stop. Having Matilda (the Princess of Cannock) in your party as early as possible makes all other challenges much more manageable. Plus, you can find the Snoop Scroll in the Secret Spot just outside Slewse. Having this ability, along with Peronel’s Nose for Treasure, makes finding treasure like Mini Medals and Tombola Tickets much easier.
Tantegel:
- Key Items/Rewards: This location feels a lot like it’s where they expect you to go first, as it’s so close to Rippleport. Here, you get the Faded Sword, which is actually Erdrick’s Sword, though it is rusted and run-down. You will need the sword to enter two other important locations. There is also a fair amount of information you learn from The Dragonlord’s Great Grandson.
- Why You’d Visit First: As mentioned, this feels like it was intended to be the first location. If you’d rather hold off on the challenge of Beran and visit a location that will allow you to grind a bit before getting an important item, Tantegel is a great option.
Zahan:
- Key Items/Rewards: Zahan is probably the least useful location when it comes to what you’ll get out of your first visit. However, it sets up an important relationship with the mermaids, and can provide a method of leveling-up, as well as setting up good fast-travel points for later use.
- Why You’d Visit First: You’d really only want to visit Zahan first if you are underleveled and need some grinding even before visiting Tantegel or Beran. The first interactions at Zahan are mostly self-contained, and don’t progress the main story too far. It’s a great place to visit before closing out the list of the first four locations with Burrowell.
Burrowell:
- Key Items/Rewards: At the end of the Burrowell quest, you’ll acquire the Sun Sigil. We felt that this location was best to visit last, as it sets things up nicely to enter the next phase of the game, which is collecting the remaining sigils. There’s really no reason to visit Burrowell first.
- Why You’d Visit Earlier: You may choose to visit Burrowell earlier to get the power of the Sun Sigil, which makes attacks more likely to be critical. However, there really isn’t any need to do this first. You’d really only want to switch this location with Zahan, and stick with Beran and Tantegel as your first two stops.
Now that you’ve finished those areas, you can start gathering the rest of the Sigils and then challenge Hargon. There are still plenty of places to visit, but they’ll generally have a clearer order to complete. The only exception is the Living Memory side quest, which lets you tackle things in any way you prefer.
